Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

An MBA after a Degree in Law :postMBA career options
Hi ,
I am a graduate from the National University of Juridical Sciences, West Bengal, India, having graduated in 2006 and presently working in one of the top PSUs of the Govt India as an in-house legal adviser.
The nature of my job currently involves documentation, advisory, arbitration and litigation matters with special emphasis on matters relating to "contracts". I would like to go for an MBA to give my career an edge , given the plethora of career choices it throws up.
I would like to get some clarity on few specific queries which i had in this regard,
1. Whats the value addition and ROI of MBA program for a law grad like me?
2.What kind of specialization for MBA would you suggest with my kind of background and which are schools in India & abroad offer such courses?
3. What kind of Job Profiles does the market offer and who are the potential employers?
Thanks,
Sudip

Hello,

I have finished my BCS and MCS from Pune through leading colleges. I secured a job as an Software Developer through campus. I love my job, I love coding for living. Although I started off late, I have been performing well and been working for 1 1/2 years now. Was looking at options to boost my career now. So came up with 2 options..

1. Immigrate to some other country and make more money.
2. Go for an MBA (Systems, MS-MIS.. suggest more here)

I do not know many people who have done MBA from foreign univs and made good out of their lives. Immigration obviously seems an easy way out.

Please suggest me, why would a MBA do me better? If so, how should I get started for it?

By reading the posts above, i get a very strong hint that many ppl out here are doing MBA or want to do MBA just for the heck of it.

@ sudip.paul and akkyy21

MBA is purely a degree that you pursue by choice. its not like higher primary education where u are forcefully made to study and you come to terms with what is being taught to you.
we cant sit here and suggest why u shld be doing your MBA.

Sudip, being a lawyer, you shld think hard if MBA is the right qualification for you. if you look around you will find so many ppl who have opted for MBA with a very definite plan in mind. maybe they want to be entrepreneurs, maybe they wanted to work in a particular sector, but they knew what they wanted to achieve. we cant tell you who your possible employers will be or why/how an MBA can be beneficial to you.

decide on what you want to be doing professionally, MBA shld just help you achieve that if at all needed. it shld not be the other way around, where you decide on MBA, and then try to see what you can do with the degree.

i am not able to clearly explain whats in my mind, but i hope you guys got the flow.

Yes you can do that if you are really sure you want an MBA and also if your really confident that you will get a seat in the college of your choice by working hard in the next 6 months. be advised that quitting your job can have it own -ve consequences. if you don't make it to a good college then you will have to enter the job scene again. and it can be a serious piss off.

no, that will be no problem. infact if you can put it clearly in the interviews, you can make it beneficial to you. it clearly shows your dedication and interest to pursue MBA.

Buddy, the bad news is that you can't exactly undo the damages, I mean you can't get back that year dropped. Though cheer up 'coz the good news is that not all is lost and your past would not have a lot of bearings on your future unless IIMB happens to be your dream college . So, start prepping for CAT without any further thoughts, and God willing you would more than make up for what you've lost. I generally suck at counselling and can't give you a verbose reply which will make you feel good. BTW, I doubt if anyone else can tell you any different.

I do not think you have goofed up your accads infact you have a good accad record. Just make sure that you give in the best effort. Many people with not excellent records make to IIM and Good B-Schools. Accads are not the only parameters taken into consideration for admit to a B-School. A whole gamut of variables play their role in admission process. So be assertive and confident.

One gets lost when he has lots of ideas bubbling in his mind and be informed that when you have ideas in your mind its a positive sign. I hope your ideas are positive.

I hope you do well. All the Best.

Hi,
This is Vineet , I am a B.E. Mech graduated in 2007, was doing a job in Production Planning and control in a manufacturing company for one yr until this June. Now I have quit job for preparing for CAT and the other MBA entrance exams........(may sound like foolishness) .
Although the decision was taken after much thinking, now that I am unemployed, a sense of insecurity has started to creep in and sometimes I feel like applying to jobs in my base location itself (earlier job was away).
So far I have been pretty much focussed abt CAT and its not affecting my preparation but just thought I might get some help from here..

Does a gap in workex affect so much in PIs?
Should I apply to jobs now or stick with my plans?

I am planning an MBA with Production and Operations Management. I have the relevent experience and I am genuinely interested as well

Kindly Help....
Regards,
Vineet

Hey people!

Well I guess many have gone thru this already but let me just explain the situation:
Did my BE in IT with 70%. Have completed one year (bravo ) in the IT industry just recently.

I am looking to take CAT 08 now. I already took CAT 06 without much preparation and did OK. Now the thing is, with my job, I dont get much time to prepare for CAT. Its just less than 4 months to go now.
Earlier i had thought I could manage my prep with my job, and i still think so. But just tell me honestly, am i being unreasonable to think i can crack CAT with 4 months of prep that too with a job to handle? or can this be done?
or should i just leave the job coz in any case quitting wont hurt me much as IT doesnt interest me much..

Kindly advice.

No. it goes without saying that you need to talk about ur decision and support it.

you can apply once CAT is over. sometimes the application process for jobs takes a very long time. Applying, then being called for interviews, and then getting a joining date. on the other hand it can get done very fast too. I went for an open test for Infy on April 1st and joined the company on April 17th.

look around. you will find loads of ppl from IT industry who crack CAT. IT guys have just 5 days a week work. so the remaining 2 days can be used to slog.

i am preparing for CAT, i have heard that many aspirants preffer NGO jobs so as balance their study-work schedule.
what exatly are those jobs. does it help score brownie points in your C.V instead of regular corporate jobs.

Hi Bharat ! ,
If I apply for jobs after CAT as u said, do u think that they will be keen enough to take me if I told them about why I left my previous job and the break?
Lately I have heard of these courses on PERT/ CPM in MsOffice.....(dont have detailed info though) but can I pursue these in the meanwhile..just to fill in the gap? How much value it will add to my profile?

But from ur reply it atleast seems that people quiting jobs for such areason is not uncommon.................that was a much needed reliever..
Thanks a million

They might ask, and why do you want to say you discontinued your work for CAT. tell them there was some immediate concerns you needed to address, and you did not have peace of mind to concentrate on work.
as much a possible try to avoid being asked this question. If they do, you can always lie, or give a highly vague answer that sounds politically correct.

Well yes, u r correct. But the weekend goes in taking the mock tests and then analyzing them. Will that be enough for 4 months to crack CAT ?
I m getting apprehensive.

Neha, cracking CAT is totally dependent on one's ability.
i know ppl who have cracked CAT just by 1 month's preparation. There are ppl who have been trying since 3 years and still not cracked it, atleast so to speak.

if you are good with basics and feel that you just need to get your approach right, then analyzing mocks should be more than sufficient to improve your performance. else, you might need to squeeze some time out of your schedule.

if you are looking for a definite answer, then YES, 4 months preparation is more than sufficient
