i am preparing for CAT, i have heard that many aspirants preffer NGO jobs so as balance their study-work schedule. what exatly are those jobs. does it help score brownie points in your C.V instead of regular corporate jobs.
well, most MBA colleges look for the profile the candidate has. the Profile includes the extra curricular activities, stream of education (Engg, Medicine, Commerce), current work-ex, responsibilities at work so on. based on all these Info, colleges try to get the best mix of students, so that the class will have an optimal diversity.
based on the profile of applicants, colleges might segregate them into smaller sub-groups like all applicants who are IT professionals, or all applicants who are freshers. now, IT, Manufacturing etc are streams that most guys/gals will be working in and thus the pool you will be segregated will be very large and thus very competitive. someone working in an NGO on the other hand will have a profile that is very unique. If He/She has opted for NGO because it was his/her zone of interest then it will add to the profile, because NGO's dont pay well(might sound little funny, ppl join NGO not to get paid, but as a service to the community)
so if you can justify your purpose and can bridge it with your aim and interest in life, then an NGO work-ex can truly be of great use, cause it shows some charector. if you join NGO just to get your profile more interesting, then it can back-fire. the panelists are quite smart
I am working in a major IT service company since 4 years (my first job) and I am planning to apply for MBA in top univerisities abroad by end of this year for a session starting summer 2009. In the mean time now I have got a lucrative offer from another company which I am willing to join. However, I still have same plans for MBA.
Could you please advice me if changing job just before an MBA would have negative impact on my MBA application?
Welcome to PG. I do not find any negative repercurssions of switching jobs on MBA admission process. If you are being offered a better profile please do go after it as it makes your CV heavier.
All the Best.

I am not sure if this is the right place for this question, but I would definitely appreciate an answer.
I just wanted to confirm something. I am working for a BPO. The CAT 2008 bullitien asks for the sector of our work. Can a BPO be passed off as an ITES (IT Enabled Service)? Or would it be more proper to categories it under others?:argue:
Actually I would prefer not to mark IT/ITES for two reasons.
1. I have 10 months experience in BPO, but also 14 months in sales as a team leader. Sales experience would definitely be more relevant for MBA. (categoriesed under others)
2. There might be a lot of candidates with IT/ITES experience, and almost everyone in IT industry would have a good academic track record. And I don't have a good academic track record. Therefore it would be easier for me to get through with others than to compete with IT guys. :2gunfire:
What would you puys suggest?:bigear: And a ton thanks ya

Puys, I m in a big dilemma and really really need your help.
The thing is, I m an Electrical Engg, was placed in "Accenture" and will be getting the joining in a a month or more... Now since it was clear that the joining may come in Oct-Nov, i joined a recruitment agency this week as "HR-recruiter". now, "I want to do MBA in 09(most probably in HR), point is Should I stick with this recruiting firm or go for Accenture" ???
Because I know if i stay in this firm, i'll get all the basics of HR definitely, and as I m sure I hv to do an MBA, what benefit do I get by joining an IT firm only to change to Management field 2 yrs later. instead if I stay in this firm, I get to know more abt sumthng that i m gonna do in future...
BUT... Also, everyone knows, Accenture is a really big ?(infact very big) name... and this cmpny dat i m with has just started(1.5 yrs old) but also As its growing, I feel my chances of growing are more with it.

This is not a problem ppl here can sort out buddy, you need to sort it out yourself. if you are so determined to do MBA then as u pointed out working in Accenture is a waste of time, on the other hand, Accenture can provide you job guarantee. in case you don't make it big in CAT/XAT this year, then Accenture will give you something to rely on. on the other hand, if you love doing what you do at your current role, then salary should not come in the way now. your just 20, you have your whole life in front of you to earn
Help ME Please... Puys, I m in a big dilemma and really really need your help.

You've answered your question yourself. Here are the things you have now:
1. You have a job with a recruitment firm. 2. You want to do an MBA in 2009-11. 3. You want to do it in HR. 4. You have a placement with Accenture, but the joining is in November.
Why are you worried? Do your job as you are now, continue with it post CAT, and then when your MBA starts, quit it. Accenture is just a brand name. I doubt it if it can add value except for the time you work there as a period.
More often than not, bschools for admission and companies for placement look at relevant experience, not branded experience. Your HR experience will be much more valuable than what an Accenture can ever provide you with.
Hi, After much thinking I have quit my job to prepare for MBA entrances...but think I shud be doing some courses to fill in the GAP Recently I came across an institute that offers courses in Project Management Softwares like Ms Office Project and Primavera.......Although I am interested in joining the course, would like to have some opinions regarding how much value will it add my profile. I have 1 yr experience in Production Planning and Control in manufacturing.. although the company was not much project-intensive... I plan for MBA with sp. in Operations. Is this the relevant course for me ?
Also , which one should I opt for ? Ms project or Primavera?........Any one familiar with these? Regards and thanks
This is my first post here and I need some career advice.I finished my engineering last month from Pune and was offered a job on campus in Atos Origin in Pune itself. However my joining was delayed to September so I applied to a few firms in Delhi.I was offered a job as an Associate Consultant at Ernst and Young for their TSRS department.I aim at doing my MBA abroad after some relevant work experience and do not really see myself programming in the future.
Can you guys help me out with my decision since I am in a dilema as to which one to choose.

if you are uninterested in programming, then its better you select Ernst and Young. its a bigger brand, and you would be working on something relevant to your interest.

Go for Ernst and Young. After you do an MBA the previous work ex in IT would be of no use but a work ex in Consulting would add a lot of value to your profile and increase your chances in consulting companies.
Thank you so much for the advice guys...but any idea about TSRS department at EnY..since that is the one i got into?
TSRS stands for Technology and Security Risk Services which means you would be an Associate Consultant in the field OF IT Security.I think u shud talk to your company and find out about the exact nature of the work.I dont think your profile would include any tech/coding work but it would still be better to find that out.In any case I think Joining EnY would be better unless its a hardcore coding job in which case you should take a fresh look at both jobs from an MBA perspective.
Hi, This is my first post. I want advice from u guys. I m an electrical engineer passed out in 2005. From 2006 till now I m workin as a lecturer in a engg college. last yr i got 74 pc in CAT. More thank your work ex, I think its your introspection which is giving a negative impression. When you are teaching an engg college and havent seen the corporate world, there obvious question would be you should go for M Tech and do well in technical field.
But since you are planning to shift into MBA, what has made you decide that MBA is your future. Think about it and and you will get a good answer from your experience.

The job involves no programming for sure. But im not sure whether i would like consulting.Since my joining in the other job is 2 months away..i plan to join this right away so that if i do change my mind...i can always go back to square 1.Atos Origin is the best european it services firm, but any idea about its India operations? Also it has a service agreement of 2 years, do these firms actually penalise you upon breaking such agreements?
Also any idea about travel prospects in both these firms?
I have completed my B.Tech in May 2008. I am selected in Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. and expected to get the joining in Oct-2008. I am Thinking of applying in SP Jain Dubai &Singapore(GMBA) for DEC-08 intake. I have given the GMAT last month but was pretty downside with a low score of 540. So, me thinking of giving the aptitude test dated on 17th aug to have a better score than my GMAT one. My other Credentials are B.Tech-7.56/10 XII-76.4% X-78.6% Work-Exp- NIL (Till Date)
As i Browse through the profile of the Jan'08-09 batch intake, i come to know that there was only one student with the min exp of 3 months in "Service Marketing and Management" specialization. So, I want to know that is Work Experience count so much that there is no fresher in the batch. As i am the fresher , should i go for the test and apply or should i defer the application for 12-18 months.
