Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

hi all....
i am back with another problem. And i hope all of you guys will help out.

I really want to go into the IIM`s and do my MBA , but I just wanted to ........... hope they aren`t kicked out!!)

and secondly.... does this give the Government jobs(like IAS) an upper hand ???
plz respond

Hello purple_green31,
Job safety is no where in the private organisations. When you aim for MBA, then its pretty clear that you are going for more responsibilities than your current profile. And also, its pretty obvious that if a company is giving you heavy salaries after MBA, it also expects you to perform exceptionally well. So, you cannot be stay away from being fired. Secondly, its your decesion in the end, to go for MBA or not. You have to prioritize your options. I know, this is the most difficult part, but at the end you only have to do it, as its your career. 😃

Hi all, I have a career related question.

I am a B tech in IT (2005 batch), work ex 20 mnths in 2 software comapnies, both r entry level comps. took cat 08 - got admission in calcutta university business management prog.If everything goes right I will finish my MBA in 2011, then my age will be 29+. Now my question is at that age will it be difficult to get a job through campuss placement. I have heared that comps prefer students below 25 yrs. Please suggets me..

Thanx in advance.

hey Pipul,

Thanks a lot for putting in your queries here. I'm sure you must be getting very good perspectives from the people who are the best in the business.

Just a little thing -

If you have anything to ask related to CAT (and I mean, ANYTHING at all), go to this thread http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/cat-query-center-faqs-regarding-cat-2009-online-and-other-exams-25041045

Put your query there to get answers from Aditya Khurana, a fundoo guy who captained PG Dream Team in the '08 season and has a 780 on the GMAT.

Cheers

hi all,
need unbiased opinion from you all! my profile is as follows:

X - 83%(ICSE)
XII - 81%(ISCE)
B.E. - 63% (VTU, Belgaum, 2004)
work-ex - 4+ years (IT) with a leading MNC.

with this profile & decent extracurriculars will it go against me in getting a call from the top-tier bschools in india? i have raked up decent percentiles in my previous attempts (91%, 97% & 95%)...but have not been able to make the cut as regards the top bschools!! now with a 4+ years usual IT work-ex & 28 years of age....am pretty confused about the whole selection process in indian bschools. applying to foreign bschools is not really an option coz of the financial constraints!! am planning to quit in another month...work for an NGO & give CAT & the other exams one last try!!
i would like to know from you all...if this profile will get me very far as regards the top-tier schools are concerned. looking forward to hearing from you all!!

thanx

Hey friends,
Ve a question on this recession:
Suppose if the company fires a guy because he's on bench, then he tries hard for CAT, sitting for 6 months, instead of wasting time in search for a new job , then will this affect him in the interview? Mean to say: will they consider him as incompetent?

well thy sure gonna ask abt wat u did for a year as by the time you get a seat it will be 10 months from now...so be prepared to tackle that question.
lemme ask u a quest...is tht 'him' you?

Hey, thanks,
Fortunately am not that "Him" as for now, but am sure that i might become that "Him" in few days, might be in months at least :'(, coz., am on bench from past 2 years, can you imagine :'(,
And suppose if that "Him" joins as a faculty for a graduate school in that period, will that be acceptable? Does BSchool consider teaching experience? Coz., MBA, in one angle is nothing but managing people, and in teaching profession he'll be managing pupil, so how much would this experience counts in comparision with the other professions - so called biggggg IT industry?????

hiiii every 1 i have a small doubt regarding choosing my carrer. iam an electrical engineer selected in tcs however i didnt receives the call letter and would it be december by the time i join there in the mean time iam in a dilemma whether to prepare for cat or a core job because some of my friends told me that some one with core job experience would be given preference over an it background is it true??? what do u ppl suggest me

Hii

I am a B. tech graduate... Passed out this year itself. I have offers from 2 reputed IT companies but as of now i have not got the joining letter from either of the companies. I am in a dilemma what to do now...
should i start my job search desperately? I have registered myself on various job portals but i am not being able to find good jobs in this period of recession. I mean the profiles most of them are offering are not very satisfactory + very low salaries.

At present i am preparing for cat and i really want to crack it this time. Though i am preparing well for it and i know i can make it But I am not being able to focus completely on it. At the back of my mind, I always have this thought that even if i crack cat, the gap might just hinder my final selection in good colleges.

I have decent acads- 10th : 91% 12th: 91% B. Tech:81%

will it be ok if i just prepare for cat at home with full concentration or is it a matter of concern if one doesn't have a job??

What should i do?? If i dont get a job, what other options do i have which could help me with my mba interviews because everyone tells me that having a gap is taken very negatively by the panel.

i'm a 22 yr old guy... passed 10th with 83% and 12th with 70% science (both in CBSE)...
after 12th i did not want to go any further into science stream so i took a one year
drop as i want sure about my options and did not want to repeat same mistkae twice..
later on i joined b.com hons. course and passed it with 65 % agg. since last 13
months i am working in a commodity trading firm.... i'm good with numbers and
last year i took cat without any prep and score 93 %ile... i want to take a
career in core finance and appearing for cfa level one next june...

now here is my dilema... i can take this year's cat and try to get into good
management school and pursue cfa simultaneously or i can go for a psu banking job till i complete my cfa
and go for mba later on...

now all the experts here plzzz try to solve my dilema ant tell me which would
be a better career course to take on from here on.....

hi nitin...I knw its recession times which add to the factor of leaving or shifting elsewhere but pls do give it a thought before goin for a paradigm shift from IT to sports and the likes...the thing is my intensions are not to discourage you but you shud be pragmatic, you can give it a shot though but do nt bank upon it...MBA would be a gud alternative for which u have gud 5 months in hand to prepare....but do some research in the field you intend to choose before u leap, that will help u a lot:)

Hey nitin96159,
You have shot this year @ Manipal Education
The course is offering specialization in Live media and Events management. I couldn't find an MBA in event management elsewhere but there are colleges who offer master in media and then you could move into events.

The event industry is more about contacts than anything else. Search for some short courses in event management which will help you garner some network.

All the best.

Well, if you can convince the Interviewers, or can justify your staying at home, then it wont be much of a problem. But just sitting at home, doing nothing, wont reflect a good personality. You need to do something, perhaps join an NGO, or any other Social Organization, club, etc, whatever, and utilize your time efficiently IN CASE you are unable to join any job. I would personally suggest you take any job you get (even if it pays less), which will give you experience neverthless. Then perform well in CAT and join a good B-School.

All the best. :

Hi,
This is Avijit. I have certain queries regarding MBA systems and IIT SOM's...
Can any one suggest me good institutes prviding MBA systems....and what should be the JMET score to get into IITS for a SC?

Hello Everyone,
Just needed a bit of advice from you guys.
I've cleared my 12 with 85% marks in best of 4 from CBSE board.
Other than that I sat for various entrance test for BBA in which I got through Symbiosis. I've already taken an admission in Symbiosis but am confused that whether I should do BCom. from DU from a okeyish college in South Campus or I should go for Symbiosis.
My ultimate aim is to do MBA in International Marketing.
Will I incur any drawback if I do Bcom instead of BBA. In any case I do not wish to work after graduation.

Hope to have a few good suggestions !

Thanks !

Hello folks,

Can someone tell me pros and cons of an Executive MBA from say top 20 univs in USA. How would it bode when compared with normal MBA from the same university.

Comparisons w.r.t
1. Total costs ( incl fees and others)
2. Programme quality
3. Job profiles post the MBA
4. any other

Also, would it be prefrable for a person with appx 5yr of exp to do an MBA or an Executive MBA.

Could the experts enlighten me .. with reasons..
