Hi all,

I need some suggestions on following-

I am doing my undergrads in IT and currently in 4th yr.
My future plan is to do MBA.

My CGPI is quite good above 9 and got in 10th - 91% , 12th - 92% resp.

I got placed in a consultancy firm as Business Associate which i didn't expect. I haven't join it yet.

Now i got confuse as after doing my study in a technical field .. i got a job which less technical ...so i m kind of unsatisfied but at the same time the job is helpful from the point of doing MBA later.

I don't know whether which job exp is more beneficial for MBA , a job from any leading IT firm like adobe etc or a consultancy firm like accenture, zs associates etc ???

Can you suggest something? I don't know exactly what to do.

Thnx !

Hello All,

Please suggest me the books for QA, VA and DI.

I do have preparation material of CL, as I had prepared it in 2006.

Should I join some coaching class too? I don't get much time due to hectic work schedule.

I feel that I complete the material I have, and in addition to it, for brushing up various topics, I do them from Books, so please suggest books for QA, VA and DI. Because just starting mockups at some coaching center will also not help without decent basics

Thanks for Some other suggestions too in this regard.

Hi all.I finished my B.Tech in the summer of 2008 from NIT,Warangal. Currently working with Crompton Greaves at Vadodara. Its been and year and I've been appraised and hold a highly important portfolio in the company.

But its been tough off late handling classes and work.I have made up my mind to quit next week and focus on cat prep for the next 4 months. Will this affect my CV in future?Just a bit apprehensive.A number of my colleagues have advised me against it and an equal number support it.

I am no VA pundit but they say there is no substitute to good reading. The IMS material is good to hone your skills on RC and PJs.Arun sharma is good for QA,though the book doesnt have solutions to all problems. However there is an exclusive thread devoted to the book on PG.

Goto and try solving the DI sets.I hope all of this helped.

Hi

Regarding your question first ... No, I dont think a career gap affects your chances of making it even to greatest of the B-schools....But you shouldnt take a decision before doing some research and there are a few things you should be clear with.

Why do you want to study MBA?.. and why quit job for the entrance exam? ....a question commonly asked in bschool PIs .. but the only difference is, here you have to answer it to yourself

Is it because you are disatisfied with your job and want to get out of the place so badly that you have no problem taking admission in a decent B-school. If this is the case, you apply to many schools, you have more options and it is a fair risk to take..

Another case is that you are looking at MBA as a career booster, having only a few elite institutes in mind and if, upon failing to make it there, you will be giving another try..you have no issues with the job. in this case, quiting job is not a good idea.. reasons -
lot of uncertainty, lot of competition, and increased pressure to perform because you have nothing to fall back upon..

Case 3 is that you believe that the only way you can make it to even a decent bschool is through focused approach and hard work. So even if the situation is not that bad on the job front, thoughts of quitting job for CAT keep crossing your mind.
But an interesting situation may arise here!, and I am telling you this out of personal experience ... you think you belong to case3 before quiting job, so you quit and aim at decent schools.. but as you work hard, you improve a lot, %tiles in mocks increase. now you want to get into the 2nd category of candidates, sadly you dont have a back up plan..

I was exactly in the same position as you, last year ......And I did just what you are thinking of doing right now.... ie quit job for CAT prep...
My advice would be wait for some time and start with prep.. ( I understand that managing prep and work is tougher in case of some jobs..
and btw I was working with Greaves Cotton which is of the same group as your co... ).. speak with people who have tried the exams and not colleagues who havent and then decide for yourself..

I am not demotivating you.. the only thing is you shouldnt find out things after quiting job but before if and then decide if its a good enough risk to take..
i'm a 22 yr old guy... passed 10th with 83% and 12th with 70% science (both in CBSE)...
after 12th i did not want to go any further into science stream so i took a one year
drop as i want sure about my options and did not want to repeat same mistkae twice..
later on i joined b.com hons. course and passed it with 65 % agg. since last 13
months i am working in a commodity trading firm.... i'm good with numbers and
last year i took cat without any prep and score 93 %ile... i want to take a
career in core finance and appearing for cfa level one next june...

now here is my dilema... i can take this year's cat and try to get into good
management school and pursue cfa simultaneously or i can go for a psu banking job till i complete my cfa
and go for mba later on...

now all the experts here plzzz try to solve my dilema ant tell me which would
be a better career course to take on from here on.....

ne suggestions....??????????

well i am not intersted in doin a job ..... i have my father's business of import-export of agro food products . bt i am nt intersted in joinin it ... rather i would like to start sum business of ma own ..
however i am workin with him rite nw in his business to gain work experience ...
bt ultimately i wanna start sumthing of ma own ...
so can u pls help me out with sum ideas stating as to wat business can i look froward to ...
btw i have done ma B.Tech in Electronics & Telecommunication ..

Dude, please grow up!!

how many people do you know, who have started a business because some someone told them it was a good deal? and how many among those have been successful?
starting a business is not about someone telling you what to do. its about you getting this understanding that there is a market for your ideas, and for that you need to have an idea.

I remember reading a quote "business is something that has to be dealt with future backward and not present forward"
have an idea as to what you would want to be doing as an entrepreneur say 10 years down the line, and then work towards it. rather than dreaming something big, and not knowing how to reach there.

I hope i made sense

Hey friends,
Ve a question on this recession:
Suppose if the company fires a guy because he's on bench, then he tries hard for CAT, sitting for 6 months, instead of wasting time in search for a new job , then will this affect him in the interview? Mean to say: will they consider him as incompetent?

No ways, he can't be considered as incompetent, mate!!! It's not his fault that he is on bench, it is just because that company don't have enough projects in the moment of recession. That's why they fired him/her.:|

I don't think that it will affect him in the interview. And if he/she has really worked hard and make it in 6 months to good B school, then it will be justified.

Hi

I am in S/W testing for 5 yrs .. I intend to become BA gathering client requirements and other things .. I have thought of doing 1 yr MBA from XLRI/SPJIMR/MDI/IIMs/Glakes etc ...

Is this a good way to become a BA ? How much %increase in salary I can expect after doing 1 yr executive MBA ?

Hi,

Do we have any certifications available for an HR MBA personal which will boost up the career and salary package?
I have a 2.8 years IT exp. But recently layed off. My CET ranks is not so good that i can make to JBIMS. But i'm interested in doing MBA in HR. So in case there are any certifications available for HR MBA i can take up the MBA course in not so premier colleges like MET, PUMBA etc.
Pls advise if any of u are aware of such certifications.
Thanks in advance

Its very wrong to look at investment in higher studies with a salary perspective. you will be sorry if not anything else.

I think u had never heard a thing called "ROI" :nono:

Hi Friends
This is my first post and I need some advice or suggestions from you guys
regarding my career rather say life decisions .I briefly describe my background so ur suggestion can be more useful
I m currently a final year BTech student of NIT,Trichy(ECE). Like any other avg Indian kid I landed up here after slogging hard for JEE. But,I had always inclination towards business (i remember reading biographies of Tata in school days). So,naturally, after landing here I tried to do all kind of things out of box like presenting B-plans(i even won one at IIM), hiring a coder to set up a social networking website etc.Although, initially things went quite well ,but nothing concrete could be achieved till now.Bw, All these things my pointers suffered( it is arnd 7+ now:|).
As far as my learning is concerned,I got intrested in Finance,CFA n all and did 3-4 NCFM courses, but all from learning point of view.

So far so good..But WTH.Placement seasons are going to start soon. But Im least bothered as most of them are Tech(IT+Core) companies barring 3-4 finance companies.Reason for avoiding tech company is that I m not best at that+I think they ll make me code/design which has little to do with business aspects

I do not think it is best time for me to start a company.I want to work in a company which will give me experience and exposure in diifferent fields of Business and at the same time ll help me build contacts which ll come handy later when I start on my own.

My questions are
1)Does typical Business Analyst or Technical analyst post in India offer such(as mentioned in above paragraph) oppurtunities? What are the chances of fresher making into such a job?
2)What kind of job a typical equity analyst do?Or any other work any Fresh B Tech graduate can get in a finance company?
3)Do u ve any suggestion? What kind of jobs best fit for a to-be-entrepreneur?What about working in a start-up?

I appreciate your time. You may answer any one of the above queries.
Thanks in advance

A business analyst is one who looks at business opportunities within a client. gathers requirement, solves domain related queries, and acts as a connect between the clients and the development team in terms of business aspects.
A technical Analyst looks into the technical aspect of a project. this involves basic coding, to more complex code optimization.
Now coming to the first question. it is not impossible to get the role of a TA or BA in Indian IT companies for freshers. but generally, qualities like these get honed with experience, so unless you display your skills satisfactorily, it is quite tough.

i dont know much about the other questions

Is shifting into finance/strategy a difficult option for people with 2-3 yrs of experience in the manufacturing/operations sector ???
If so, what are the possible ways to conquer the difficulties???

i have got 97.3 in cat and 67 in snap...even with a score like that in CAT i still cudnt get into any good college...coz i dont have 60% in my graduation...!!!
so now that most colleges are done with their admission process what options do i have...??

is there any MBA in green technology, environment etc?
