hey guys this is Nitesh ...i am a 2008 passout B.Tech in communication engineering......i was placed in wipro oncampus ...bt due to recession wipro is not going to deliver ths time i think...and i couldnt get into any othr company as well....i missed cat 2008 ....bt i am planning to give cat and other mba exams next year(2009)....my query is for next year will this gap of 18 months without any job experience will affect my admission into mba colleges....i want to know how negative this gap can be for iim and othr colleges like xlri, symboisis etc....
Hi nitesh....
I think i can understand your dilemma as I am in the same spot The only diff. being Accenture instead of Wipro.... I personally feel that 18 months is a pretty long time to explain, and although there are people who do make it in such ways, I don't think its advisable and further more, you will yourself feel much restless and stressed out if you don't work for a year and a half....
Try for a job in some other field of your liking if you feel that you may not make it here but try not to sit idle...
M a 2005 passout.. Electrical n Electronics Engineer.. have been working for 2 yrs now.. into IT field.. currenlty m workin in an MNC IT co., as a tech support analyst. I am in the Compliance and secuity Team for IT.
I am fine with doing a FULL TIME MBA but i dont want to change my field completely. I am looking for a growth in IT field with a management perspective.
To be frank, I thought several times before posting this. Necessity overcame shame in the tug-of-war that occurred in my mind.Well,I graduated in mechanical engg in 2006 but I don't have any work ex so far in theory.I had worked in a BPO for some time, but I didn't resign(absconded ).So, in paper I have zero work ex. I had lot of backlogs in engg which had affected my psyche in a very negative manner. I had no confidence to appear for any job test/interview. The reason why I had so many backlogs was not a lack of intelligence, but just that I lost all interest after 1st year and skipped most of the exams.I was just not ambitious.
Anyway, I was supposed to pass out in 2006,but when I cleared my back papers, technically I graduated in 2007 with just 64.38%. It was just this year that I had an epiphany about career and life. It dawned upon me that I've not done anything significant in my life so far and that it's high time I'd done something about it. I didn't want to do an engg post graduation, obviously. So,it was MBA.(I know it's a lame reason).
I've worked hard and written CAT for the first time(& most probably the last). As per all coaching institute predictions I'm getting scores good enough to get calls, but I seriously doubt if I get any call because of my egregious record.I've no co-curricular activities to boast of and my acads are : 94.16 in Xth and 77.77 in XIIth.
Suppose I get a call (hypothetical situation and not necessarily an IIM), is there a remote possibility that any institute will take me in? Personally I think I'm FUBAR(as you might have guessed from the tone of this post). If not, what can I do to revamp my career? I could use a little help from you people. I'm all ears 😃

Yes certainly you will get a call. IIM's or for that matter any college, gives calls based on the performance of a student in the entrance exam. now having got a call, final convert is based on your GD/PI and your past academics.
keep in mind that most colleges use academic performance as a selection tool and not a rejection tool. which basically means, if you have done well in your GD/PI and have shown positive signs, then your academics might not be a big problem for you as they have very little weightage.
its all about how you perform here on. for some people, even a poor show in the interviews can be covered by an excellent past performance. but for you, its all about the future. but hey, thats great isnt it...
I am BE mech presently looking for a job in manufacturing sector .. i have an experience of 1 yr in industrial PPC. In july i quit the job to concentrate on CAT and other entrances..
Now that CAT is over I have started to apply for jobs... but fcing the following problems
I registered with a few online job portals but they dont seem to work for me...only HR consultancies respond with some odd mail and it ends there!
Also, I dont know many people in production who can refer me in their companies..
My earlier job was in Pune where the industrial jobs situation is comparatively better... so i m thinking of moving to pune for some days after XAT... but still i m unable to figure out where to start and whom to contact... or whether I should directly approach the companies to know if there are any openings...
What other optoins can i look at... are there any job consultants in Pune or Bangalore or even Mumbai for that matter who can help me? I mean professional ones and not the ones who operate over the internet job portals..

Get in touch with friends man. forward your resume to anyone who works in manufacturing.
Alternatively, you could also settle for some job for the time being and then shift from there. by some job, i mean to talk about the IT/ITES field or as an junior lecturer in a college or the many coaching institues for CAT/XAT so on. not only will they give you money, they will give you plenty of confidence

I agree with him. No manufacturing company will hire greenhorns in these days of recession except maybe from campuses to maintain relationships
I am now out of Infosys as i didnt have enough CGPA at the end of training. Now i have plenty of time to prepare for CAT 2009.
How bad is it to tell the interviewers at any B-School that i was at home preparing for CAT and to not have any work exp certificate for this one year?
Also, i design websites and run some blogs by which i earn about the same as my in hand salary at Infosys and would earn even more eventually.
So is telling that i was designing websites a smart thing? or shud i join some company instead??
PS: I am at a stage that neither qualifies me as a fresher or experienced. Thats what i am most worried about.
The thread I was searching for all the time. Its a long story In cat 07 I did ok. 95%ile. Converted welingkar, AND cdnt join due to a recurring health problem. Was outta action for 3 months(kinda kinda) and took cat again getting 128 (approx). Also cleared IIFT. Now the bad part. I failed in my sem exams in may due to the same problem and in general have a bad acad record(55 %, mumbai, BE). Health playing no minor part here. Now I have applied to B Schools but now have a query, 1) will anybody take me in considering my resume, 2)Plan 2 if i dont get into any value for money B School, the only options are getting a job in some BPO or some data entry types. 3)I get into an oki oki B school do I join that? Or doin 1 of the above jobs and giving cat again is better?

why do you think telling them about designing websites or maintaining blogs is a bad thing? no one has told that you need to have a full fledged job at hand with a payslip and stuff to prove that you are worth something.
colleges look for something unique, because ultimatly thats what companies look for in the candidates. as long as you have something to show in terms of proof for your website thing, you have an amazing chance.

1) your resume comes into picture only as a selector and not as a rejection element. if you have been exceptional in your entrance and GD/PI, you will most probably not be questioned on your resume. but if you have been just average, then they might use the past performance as a medium to select 5 ppl from a group of 10 who otherwise seem quite similar.
2) whats the question here?
3) doesnt this contradict point 2 you have mentioned.
given the market situation ............... anywhere for that matter is dull..... is this the golden period for mba wannabes............ i am an engineer frm bangalore and name is karthik gave cat but of no avail got a depressing academic record really worried
hi this is sharad kumar .j i'm pursuing my final yr cse in M.I.T. anna university i hv got placed in MICROSOFT INDIA as well as GOOGLE ANALYTICS. i hv got selected for MASTER IN UTAH,OHIO AND UC BERKELEY. i hv been selected for iitm doms too.wat shld i pursue
well i have asked raven about this a long time back...i need some help....
I have been working for a major software firm...i was pretty frustrated with job and have resigned few days bak...today is my last day at office....my problems are- a) I have call from IIFT and can expect a call from one iit out of top 3(based on predictions)..no chances of any calls based on cat....i'm in a unique quest to prepare for interviews, prepare for xams left and search for new job.....i would be pretty happy to join IIFT or top3 iit's this year....
so now my problem is regarding what to say about job in interviews...12 month work-ex in s/w firm....next what? last yr my iift interview was on 28th jan...this year i can expect the same....
my options are- i) i have got a job as business analyst in a startup of 3 ppl(total strength is =10 ppl) who hv passed out IIM-B some 20 yrs back and were holding posts like MD in reputed companies...its a good venture...but they were not ready to take me as i would leave in 4 months(if selected)..there to have atleast one job in hand i had to lie that i won't be joining b-school this yr....now i have this job in hand...joining would be in jan 1st week....but if i get into any b-school...they would create trouble giving me work-ex and that's not what i would like to have...but if i don't convert any call this is the best place to be in..i really like the job ii)become a faculty in time/cl/ims...this job i don't have in hand...but if i try i can easily get it...the prob is what will i say in interviews as it will give a -ve impression...
also joining of i) is really late for iift...as it wud give me just 20 days in new job and won't be able to learn much....
do i have any option?
am searching for more options...but things are not that easy...

Hi, Dude i am in exactly the same position(12 months of workex in accenture which i left coz i was really frustrated with it,gave CAT but not too sure if i will get a call and in all likelihood even i am expexting a call from 1 of the top 3 iits).I guess it makes sense to go for the full throttle and give the remaining exams and then look beyond, coz they are still a lot of coveted institutes up for grab nd dude they are a lot of people who have done this(gave up on their job for CAT) we are not the first so i feel just give ur all for the remaining exams and then we both can plan together after getting our calls.

for a start, i was really shocked to see so many offers in hand. but then when i read your post again i realized that all were quite different
you have choice between MBA, MS and Job. isnt choosing one quite simple? if you think u wanna earn before you study again or for that matter any other reason u wish to state, then you can join either microsoft or google.
MBA and MS are very different in terms of course content and structure. so based on your passion, you can choose either MS or MBA.

I'm in a similar situation like u, the difference being i haven't resigned yet and i don't have any other job-offer at hand. I have been pondering over leaving this IT job for quite sometime now, frustrated. My only worry is the MBA Interviews!! Ppl please reply to the_hate's query... :)

Dude if you are in IT you would know how the situation is right now. Hold on to your job, as chances of re-employment are bleak.
