Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

hey,

i have just finished engineering from Mumbai University (EXTC) with first class.

I am placed with L&T; infotec. but the joining is not till March '09.
(i not interested in a career in IT and interested in finance)

i'm preparing for CAT '08....but after giving my SIMCAT's and seeing my poor performance in it i have become disheartened...i am pretty sure IIM's will have to wait for me...:frown:

now i feel that i have come to the end of the road...

i really don't know what to do?

should i prepare of CAT'09...what do i do till then...??
does teaching at a school/college/coaching class consider as job exp? what abt doing ur own business, will that be considered as work ex.??

how do u get a 99.99999999 percentile?
or just get up one day with no preparation and get 99.xxxx percentile in an exam (as i have read in many threads/posts)...are these people born smart...do i even have a chance against these people (or u)?

sorry for the double post...a newbei...
by the way how do u delete it....

You can't do that on your own...Just let one of the MODs know, they only have the privilege

Mr Crusader,

CAT is an aptitude test, and IMHO, aptitude has a lot to do with a persons individual character.

Getting a 99.9999999% is not just about studying hard, or knowing the basics.
I have a friend, who is brilliant in quant, but he just manages to clear the cut off every time, rather than consolidating in that section. why? its because he doesn't handle himself well inside the exam hall.

I also have another friend, who hardly knows 10 formula's in quant, but he scores very well in that section, because he solves every problem using logic. he always tells me "Bharath, dont learn formula's. CAT never asks questions where your ability to remember formula's is tested" well i dont know how right he is, but he just graduated out of IIMB this past March.

now from the example, what i am trying to convey, is the fact that everybody have their own way of getting a 99.999 percentile. some work hard, some work smart, others are born brilliant and have it very easy, but remember clearly that what works for one will not/might not work for you.

sometimes i feel, the biggest hindrance in getting a 99 percentile is yourself. you put urself under so much pressure, that you loose it mid way through. in this AIMCAT season itself, i have observed that in any AIMCAT, where i have been least bothered about the paper, i end up getting around 95-98% but if i give the paper too much of importance, i totally mess it up.

i dont know if this helped you. but im just trying to convey that a good score in CAT does not come from being great, its about doing great in that 2.5 hours

Well Said dude !!
Its very true about the CAT exam & getting a good percentile. I too have experience when i m least bothered i get 98 -99 %ile in IMS SIMCAT , when serious i get less percentile.
After i got an offer from SPJain for GMBA, my scores are on the high trajectory path.
Yes anyone must focuss one's own ability & workaround to crack exam/interview.

There is no formula that if works well for smone, would work for others as well. Instead find your own way how to reach the destination, The final destination is same for all, but there are many different paths which exist in disguise , which needs to be discovered by ourselves only.

Can any one throw some light on the profile of Research Analyst in Frost and Sullivan? How much does a fresher get paid and what are the career prospects?

Hi,

I have an option to be

1) an interest rate futures trader

2) a spot market equity trader

Both these profiles are in the US/European Financial markets. Can someone please shed light on the pros and cons of the 2 profiles. And which one out of the 2 should be chosen?

question:
Sir if i am a pd category candidate....if i apply in this category....do i have a chance to make it through the general category if my score is good enough....are there separate GDs for pd category candidates....??? i am talking about CAT and IIMS in particular

plzz reply...i am posting it here...coz i found no other topic active

i m an computer engineering student studying in final year. I have got a job in a software company that makes products for banks and insurance providers. It is a medium size product based company. I took this job as i aim to get into financial firms. I have heard from many seniors that financial companies do not give core finance jobs to non-finance background guys. I will do an MBA after a job ex of around 2-3 years. I am thinking of doing some courses ( while i m working ) to add value to my CV. I wanted to know that if doing m.com by correspondence help me. Will it add to my CV. As i have doubts that would companies take correspondence courses seriously ?? can please anyone tell me that should i go for the m.com. Or should i consider some other course ( please tell me about other courses also) .
Thank you

Hey,

Went through that sometime back. I would suggest rather than going for MCOM, you could try for MA in Economics or Statistics. And yes, MA does have more value addition than MCOM. Rather than go for a correspondence course, why not try for external?

Cheers.

thank you for ur reply ..c i m going to stay in my job 4 2 years atleast .. so was thinking of doing some degree ... but m not sure if the degree ( external or correspondence ) will be recognized by companies ... that is as my basic education is comp engg and if i try to apply 4 a (core) finance related job (after an MBA  ) will companies give any thought to my MCOM/MA degre..
thank u
I will be applying to B schools this year...some of which include 1 year MBA's where the specialization is asked for specifically...Now, in that case , how is one supposed to zero in on ONE specialization..
i have over 2 years of experience ( will be 3 by the time i join a b school) in an IT firm in the Talent Mgmt sphere..and my profile has been anything but 'boxed' in this two year period...i have been involded in trng delivery , content dvpt , designing a leadership dvpt program on one hand..and beign involved in sales training on the other , account based marketing , even RFP repsonses , i have even dabbled in comceptualizaing/branding and implementation of some of the org. strategic talent dvdpt initiatives...

Now if i am asked to make a decision as to what career do i want to choose for the rest of my life , i 'd have no clear reposnse to it...i seriously dont have a clue on that ( and neither do i consider myself foolish for not having an inkling )...So under these circumstances how does one zero in on a specialization? HR consulting looks exciting but so does Brand Mgmt and heck , even services mkting ( am in IT)

I did my Bachelors in Economics from DU and joined staright from campus in '06 ..and my dept. was formed in '05..so there was never a scope for striaghtjacketing in the team..there were no processes in place..and so we got a chance to get our hands dirty..fortunately or unfortunately ;-)

What's a poor soul got to do ??!!!

What's a poor soul got to do ??!!!

Let me begin by saying that you are one of the luckiest guys around. Not many, as part of their profile, and in their first job at that, get such a variegated experience.

You have a lot of knowledge about a lot of things. Why are you straitlacing yourself then into one field?

Also, why are you looknig at only those bschools that box people from the first day itself? Don't do that. It may be easier to get into these bschools, but trust me, its equally difficult to change later.

Your question - what's one gotta do? is not the right question. It should rather be, 'What should I not do?'

You need not worry about choosing your specialization as early as the application date. There are some colleges yes, that do ask for such things, but they are not the only eggs in the basket.

There are also many institutes that provide a generalized basic course, and leave it to you to choose the components of your major. You can then fill up your course buckets with whatever suits your mind. Neddless to say, your experience would come in hand to decide what you want.

You have a varied experience behind you. Don't use that as justification to say that you are undecided, and want to lock yourself in one field. Don't do that.

Regards,
Grondmaster

Don't bother too much. Nobody knows what to do. I am not sure even after 5 years of pre-MBA and 6 months of post MBA workex. Just for time being decide on one field and decide thats what your passionate about for at least the next 4-5 months and finish all your SOPs, interviews etc. You can always change your mind later. I have even heard of people going to other fields after a specialized HR course like PM&IR; in XLRI. Maybe somebody from there can confirm. Just make a story that helps you play your profile to your advantage and go ahead.

Hi...
my brief profile
10th-90%
12th-89%
graduation - 80.51%
(Bsc (H) Chemistry from St Stephen's College (DU))

after my graduation I started preparing for CAT 08 n now with the predicated scores of 70-75..i know i don't stand any chance in a gud B school
So i was thinkin of takin up a job so that i can take cat next but the only option i can see are the BPOs...i don't think there is any other job i can get with just a Bsc degree...
is this idea of a bpo job a gud one ...?
I am preparing for the other mba exams but this thought is constantly on my mind ..therefore, tryin to find a solution..

if sum of the experts over here can look into my problem and advise me sumthin..plz do so..
