Anybody got waitlisted at IIM Indore IS area?

Converted Indore,Ranchi&Trichy :) Who else for hr@iim indore?

This post is a bit long. So have some patience. Hope it will help the future aspirants.

Area – OB/HRM

1. IIM Trichy

There were three rounds of selection. The first round consisted of a written test. We were required to answer 2-3 questions which detailed a research proposal. The page limit was restricted to an A4 size paper and each answer was approximately 150 – 200 words in length.

This was followed by a Technical interview consisting of faculties (4 - 5 in my case) from your chosen area of interest.

Some of the questions were:-  1. Explain Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy 2. Explain Nonaka’s Model and its practical application in an educational setting 3. Explain Needs Hierarchy on a board. 4. Research Interests and some questions on it 5. Some other theories of motivation such as reinforcement theory, ERG theory, Equity Theory. 6. Meaning of “Attitudes” and their implications in a work setting. 7. Difference between a T-Test and F-test 8. Difference between correlation and regression and their interpretation.

After this a shortlist was declared, who were subject a behavioural round of interview. The panel consisted 1 – 2 faculties from different specializations, about 6 – 8 in total. The interview was particularly stressful. Some of the questions were : -  1. Why FPM ? 2. Why don’t you have any work-experience? (This question was debated at large) 3. What do you want to do after FPM?

Keep your cool in this round.

PS – The seniors were very helpful and ensured that the entire process was conducted smoothly

2. IIM – Calcutta

There were three rounds of selection process. The first stage was an interview conducted by faculties from your area of specialisation (4 - 5). It was eliminating in nature. Some of the questions were: -  1. Explain Needs Hierarchy Theory. 2. Explain about your research proposal and 4 – 5 questions from it. 3. Some other questions relating to Motivation and Attitudes. 4. When to use correlation. 5. Meaning of high correlation 6. Difference between correlation and causation and their interpretation. 6. Meaning of Type -1 and Type – 2 error and their implications.

After this a shortlist was declared and we were subjected to a written evaluation. The written test had 2 question papers – Quant and English. We were allowed to have a look at them and decide which one to attempt. The quant paper had questions relating to functions, probability, 2-D Geometry etc. The verbal had a passage followed by 3 – 4 questions.

The second round of interview had faculties from different specializations (4 - 6) in my case. Some of the questions were:-  1. Why FPM  2. The interest in the research proposal. 3. Why did you attend the Verbal part and how would you rate yourself in the test. 4. Some technical questions were also asked.

The results were declared the day of culmination of the process.

PS – The campus and food was great. The seniors were always ready to help. The wait for interviews was made less taxing by the varieties of “Pakoras” that were being served.

3. IIM - Bangalore

There were two rounds of selection – written and interview. There was no elimination.  In the first round we were given the first 2 -3 pages of a journal publication (Introduction, literature review and research problem). 2 -3 questions were asked which basically tested how we would approach a research problem. The interview that followed asked us about the research interests and were based on the answers we had written earlier. So no use in mentioning them.

4. IIM - Lucknow

There was only one round of interview. It was a mix of technical and behavioural. Some of the questions were: - 1. Tell me something about yourself and how FPM fits into your career objectives. 2. What do you know about the FPM Program? 3. Tell your two favourite subjects (Compensation, Competency Mapping) 4. Difference between Job Description and Job Specification 5. What is Job Analysis, ways of conducting it and its utility? 6. Steps in designing a Compensation Plan. 7. Steps in designing a Competency Model.

A little advice – Kindly study a basic OB book (such as Stephen P Robbins and Neharika Vohra). It helps a lot. Almost everywhere the interview lasted (25 – 35 minutes). At the final stage basically all the aspirants have same level of intellect. So it would help if you can maintain a calm composure and stable head. Answers accompanied with a smile go a long way. Apply to the IIT’s as well. Don’t put all your eggs in the same basket. Prepare and clear UGC-JRF NET as this would ensure scholarship and  you can pursue PhD from some good institutes which don’t offer scholarship.

Thanks a Lot

Your choice of PhD entrance test to attend considering 1)possibility of selection 2)probable no of seats 3)probable no of candidates called? Both the places have test on same day and I cant figure out where to go.

No of candidate who appeared for HR/OB: 16

No of candidate selected finally: 1

No of faculty in the panel-3

Duration of interview-35 min appox.

Questions asked: 1. what is your research interest area?

My ans: i am looking for a research that would specifically deals with coorelation  between Employees retention and emerging concepts of HRM like Job crafting and Authentic leadership.

this was followed by counter questions like what do you mean by job crafting? who coined this term. how will you analyze the relationship between job crafting  and employees retention and others.

Next question was if you have to do a research with people in open community( i had worked with open community settings in my post grad) what would be your research topic and model? i told them i would like to relate child education with innovation.

they gave me a sheet of paper and asked me to draw a model. My model was like this: Innovative nature of student+school with suitable opportunities= positive learning and knowledge base.

they asked my why i want to join fpm at young age? I tired justfying my answer.

few more questions on my academic background etc.

Result: Not selected.

IIM-Calcutta

Area: both OB and HR.

No of candidates who appeared: 12 i guess

No of candidates who were finally offered admission : 4

No of rounds-2 interview round, 1 written and one faculty discussion.

First round:  No of faculty in the panel-3

they begin with my research interest. there were a number of counter questions like what are the available scales that can be used for job crafting , how do you find it practical? etc.

after this they asked me to solve 3 mathmatical questions consequitvely. First question was that if there are 20 people in a room and each one shakes hand with the other, what would be the total number of shakehands?2nd questions was a linear equation and 3rd questions was from geometry. thankfully i solved all the three.

after this they asked my questions regarding my goal, objective to persue fpm programme and what would by my approch to carry research. they asked me what would be the statical methods that i would follow etc.

After shortlisting in the 1st round, we were asked to appear for RAT. this test carries 80 marks. pattern of RAT changes every year. this year we were given the option to either appear for qualitative paper or quant. I opted for qualitative one. this paper had an old article from chicago press and there were 3-4 questions to answer. article was tough to read and understand.

After rat, next day we had 2nd round of interview with nearly same faculty members and just one additional new faculty from different area. this interview was equaly stressful. majority of the questions were based on my graduation degree, P tests, T tests, Coorelations etc. Interview lasted for 30 minutes appx.

afte this faculty had a meeting in which they further shortlsted candidate.

Result: Not selected in the first list. waiting list awaited.

IIM-Indore

Before coming for IIM-Indore for interview, first round of shortlisting was done based on score in the written examination. beleive it or not some of my friends didnt get shortlisted even though paper was relatively easy. the RAT that was organized had around 500 candidates appearing at different centres.A total of 155-160 were shortlisted for interview round. RAT paper had nearly 50-80 quant/logic reasoning questions and 20-30 english questions. No negative marking. my centre was Patna. I didnt solved many questions but yes i attempted questions from both the sections so over all it was balanced.

The interview was very smooth and short. it was totally fun. they cracked jokes. asked my why i want to join indore when i have converted 2 calls earlier( Ranchi and Trcihy)? what is my research interest? a number of counter questions and some demorlizing sentences like you cant handle this course, you dont seems to be studious etc. Further they asked me about my prior achievements( i had mentioned my selection and training at Indian Military Academy, also about my gold medal in HR at Delhi University).

Over al the interview lasted for 20 minutes only

Result: Selected

IIM-Ranchi

Rounds:3, Written,Presentation round and final fpm committee round.

Written round: A case was given and we were asked to give our suggestions as a consultant based on HRM  concepts and theories. The case study dealt with Leader member exchange theory. It was 4 page article follwoed by 4 questions to answer. time limit was 2 hrs.

Presentation round: individually we were suppose to bring a power point presentation and justify our research interest area. the presentation faced a number of questions interrupting my explanation so one should be ready for this. over all 15 minutes were alloted for the interview, but after many counter questions and explanation the presentation ended only after nearly 35-40 minutes.

After the shortlisting at presentation, finally few of us appeared for the committee round. there were a total of 8 faculties. Each of them asked stleast 2 questions. interview was highly stressfull and questions were very random, like explain differences between indian and western philosophy, give an example of chrasmatic leadership from india, why fpm? i said i want to start my own hr think tank to which they said think tank is only for pschudointellectual. they do nothing and you wont be able to teach. i tried justifying this argument by sighting the example of IDSA,PRS both being run by FPM alumni of IIM.

the interview lasted for 15 minutes.

Result: Selected.

IIM-Trichy

Rounds-3, 1 written 2 interview.

Written round was easy. we were asked to write research proposal in only one side of a a4 sheet. which i did very well.

this was followed by area speciifc interview. there were 5 faculty members. they were very polite and humble. same research interest questions and its practical applications.

they asked me motivation and leadership theories. there were some counter questions too. but over all i did really well in the interview.

after getting shortlisted, we appeared for committee interview. it was very easy go, frank and fun kind of. however they asked a lot of staticial questions and its application. some questions were based on how i can realted my current education with FPM programme etc? over all the interview lasted for 15 minutes only.

Result: selected

Hi, Am a newbie here. As my name suggests, I am a bit old in academic terms (in human terms I am 36) but somehow my brain has locked onto the idea of PhD in management and being a distinguished faculty (I swear), and all I can see or think about it is that. I need some help as last time I picked a book and studied for aptitude tests/interviews etc was in 2005. I am a banker but I am interested in public policy primarily and marketing as a fall back. Last 12 years have been sales and marketing for me and I have done fairly well professionally in a deemed PSU bank, which is actually not much to speak of. So first question: 1)Is 36 late or a disadvantage from the point of view of suitability of program, 2)Is it a terrible idea to pick an area that is not supported by your work ex? 3)Is there a world beyond IIMs for PhD in management in India ie. IITs and other institutions? WOuld be glad for your help! Thanks.

Anybody got selected in Information Systems area IIM Indore?

Hi!

I wanted to know whether the FPM programme at IIM Lucknow is AICTE approved and considered as PhD equivalent by AIU? I couldn't find it written on their website. I remember IIM A and B mentioning it explicitly on their website. Also, IIM Indore teachers had clarified during the written test round that  they have received AICTE approval.

Can someone please help?!

Thank you.

How is research in OBHR carried out? Is it more qualitative in nature as compared to other areas of management?

Has anyone received the detailed email with joining dates from IIM Indore?

Hello All,

I have been shortlisted for FPM in HR at IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore. Please suggest which one I should join.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I got selected for FPM in Decision Sciences at IIM Bangalore. I also got selected for PGDM at IIM Indore. I am interested in research. Will getting a PhD in management without an MBA hinder me from securing govt./private sector job opportunities? (in the event of an unlikely switch from academics to industry).

I am highly grateful for any inputs on this matter.

Thank you.

Is fpm of isb in the same league as iim? Read somewhere that fpm degree of isb is not recognised.. Can some please clarify on this?
