therock_12 Sayshey ya'll out there!!!!! whats up!!!! so here is my BIG question!!!!! any people out there who have a call and thinking about turning it down!!!!!! for the record i'am debating it!!! got a call only from SIMS and not really sure if i want to take it...... any one else also in the same boat...... thinking about writing cat again next november....... try for some better marks...... anyway bye for now!!!!! do reply
My advice to you would be to drop a year only if you have scored more than 85-90 in CAT this year. I had done tha myself and my three subsequent CAT scores were 94.6, 95.53 and 98.79.. And I am very sure that even if I appear for the exam today I will easily score 95%ile plus.. The thing is, it is very difficult to gain after you have reached a certain stage. CAT has a lot to do with aptitude rather than preparation. Just solving a hundred questions don't take you anywere. You need to work so that you improve your aptitude... which is not that easy. So if your aptitude brings you above 90, then a little bit correct preparation should take you above 95. If somebody scores 60%ile and says that preparations was not good this time, and if he prepares well this year he will score 90%ile: I would say its just wishful thinking.
Rest is your decision,

Hi Bhabesh,
I have been reading u r posts for quite a while now. And I am really surprised to find u r intrest in this particular thread.
I guess u would b helpful in answering my question. Could u plz tell me how much does a first year student get during summers (average)doing his/ her interns .I am specifically asking for a marketing student.

Rocky

Well Bhabesh,I wouldn't wanna disagree with you totally cause Dude you are anyday better to answer that paticular query .....You are an IIM student afterall so no arguments with that........Though i would just like to give my point of view on that.....Of course its afterall an aptitude test and I think CAT is a lil overhyped....Its no big deal afterall.....I myself have taken CAT twice with 87.55 and 93.13%iles......and I too do believe that if an idividual is thinking of dropping and giving CAT again he should be really sound.....But the fact of the matter is that In India there are the IIMs and the non-IIMs.....so anyone who planning to drop an year even though he has an admsn in a decent engh B-school like SIMS.....should have that passion of getting into an IIM cause anything else is not worth enough for a year drop....And when you thinking abt an IIM you really have to be realistic....you might be good but yoy gotta ask yourself .....are you good enough.....cause to get into an IIM you need atleast 98%+(thats the minimum) and even if you screw up in a single section........you know wat happens..........Thats my point of view though.....you might agree or disagree but the bottom line is that if you really feel strongly abt getting in only in an IIM and you feel that you stand a good chance....then go for it.........ALL THE BEST......

Hi rocky,
As I have mentioned earlier, I have an army background;hence my interest in this institution.
The amount of stipend that a summer intern is offerred varies from company to company. A company like Max new york life insurance pays just 6000 bucks, whirlpool pays 10,000, Maruti 12,500, L'oreal pays 15,000. Top notch companies like ITC and Asian paints pay 15000. These are figures for the coming summers. They might change but the change will not be very much. On an average it will be 10-11k, as smaller marketing companies pay less.
I hope I have been able to give you some idea of the remuneration that marketing companies offer.

Bhabesh
Bhabesh,

@ therock :
95% chances that i wont be taking up sims......already mentally geared to give cat/snap et al another shot next year.
Been a year of misses for me. Missed IIFT written by around 0.4
Made a big mistake by not opting for the MarCom course at SIBM with a snap score of 89...cos i seriously am a hardcore marketing chap.
Missed out on NM cos of a pathetic GD.
Dont think i really wanna take up TAPMI even if i convert it. Will fight it out with parents if that happens.
Still in my final year of graduation....so i think i can afford to give cat another shot.
@ Raghav: How's things dude? Hope u nail XL or XIMB...u certainly are worth one of them.

Dude result awaited for XL and not filled XIMB so in a process of thinking 2 deposit sims fees
thanks guys for your replies!!!!! but still confused!!!!!! the thing is that i got a 74 percentile in cat!!!!! ya i know!!!!! sucks right...... but before u start to judge me let me just clear something!!!!!!! i got a negative in my verbal..... now come on there is no way that i can get a negative again if i attempt cat!!!!! i mean what are the chances of that happening.... gettin decent marks in my time mock cats so think that if i give cat another shot will be able to crack it!!!!!!
now the thing with sims is that it is not the best of the institutions out there...... and i see no point in taking it up and regreting it later!!!!!! so lets see!!!!! another problem is that my parents are not telling me what to do!!!!! as per them i should do what i want to do!!!!! and that just makes it a whole lot tougher to decide.... i mean if they just tell me what to do it will make my life a whole lot easier!!!!! sounds wierd i know but that's just the way it is...... anyway cheers.... thats just the way life is!!!!!! hopefull will make up my mind by the end of the week!!!!!!
Problem is for multiple call getters.......the hostel fees is not refundable. Only the safety deposit fees of library/hostel is refundable.
So if one deposits like 90K...one stands a chance to lose almost 60-70K if one converts something else.
hey ppl
howz is life
the thread is getting boring day by day i think......... so y dont v discuss thats makes sense .... like R INDIAN MBA GRADS OVER PAID i found this in one of sites........... wat say guys can we discuss this. since this is the hottest topic right now with soaring placements all round...
waiting for response
cheers

Hey, like I said before if you really feel strongly about it then go for it.....Like they say FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BRAVE........
No Seriously, Take it from me...cause I really can understand how you feel....I was in the same situation last time......I had made it to International School of Business and Media in Pune...and I too felt the same way for the instt....I wasn't really satified with the instt and believed that I deserved smthing better....But since I didn't want to take the risk and didn't want to go through the ordeal I decided to take it up....Truly I was a coward.....
But then once in the instt i realised that since I am not happy here I will not be able to perform well plus I would always have the regret in life that I could do my MBA from a much better place......Once that thought got into me I decided to put my foot down and gave up my admission.....But I would recommend you to take the decision right now...not after joing the instt cause then it really feels stupid and is really taxing on ur father's pocket......cause you lose out on a lot of money..........
Well so I took a bold step and I am very happy that I took it...never once have I regretted dropping the year and I think I was able to do justice to my step as well....I got a 93.13%ile In CAT...........
So the bottom line is that if you even have a lil bit of doubt about the instt or like you say that you don't wanna regret joining it later.....it wil definitely affect your performance in the instt which in turn will have an affect on the placement that you get....plus a regret for life...............Then be bold enough...listen to your inner voice and go for it...and once you have decided don't think abt it......don't get into double minds.......JUST GO FOR IT ALL GUNS BLAZING DUDE and at the end of the day you would be a happy and a proud person........Watsay others...?? am I making any Sense............
And ya don't look at the easy way out by letting your parents decide for you....no ways......you are old enough..you gotta make decisions for you yourself.....thats life......and then you gotta learn to take full responsibilty of your own actions.........
Thats my advice to you dude............Give it another shot and do tell me when you make it to the IIM next time........
ALL THE BEST.............
P.S. Do let me know what you finally decide...........
WELL FOLKS....i m back...yeah..my broadband network is working now..
and me finally catching up wid u all..!!!
life without the internet was too mundane..missed u ppl..!!
HAPPY COLOURFUL RANG BIRANGI HOLI TO
ALL...ENJOY FELLOWS..!!
- thanks bhabesh for all ur inputs..good to see u frm IIM taking interest in SIMS..
- therock_12...... my advice would be.... listen to ur gut feeling..
- if u think u want to get into some specific B-school only then go for preparing all over again...
- if u think u can improve ur performance in ur scores & u have the confidence to do so..go ahead..
- set ur focus, gear up to drop a year and prepare to score better.
- the only thing is u should be determined, hardworking n have a single-minded mission to achieve ur goal..:2gunfire:
- everything is possible if u r confident throughout and u know that nothing will stop u from ur aim..
- its a one time decision..take it wisely n plan ur future accordingly..
- "miracles happen..if u can create situations for them..!!" 😃
(PS:-me edited this post to change the font style..!!)
Hey...As the others said, go with your gut feeling. If you feel that you can change the negative score in verbal to around 90 to 95 percentile without having any reduction in the other sections, then by all means go ahead and this will also mean that I am getting a chance to get into this institute
(Waitlisted). And since you feel that SIMS is not one of the best institutions, then don't join. I know that feeling, though I do not feel the same of SIMS... I spent four years regretting my decision for joining an engineering college that I did not like at first itself. It's great to know your parents are letting you take your decisions for yourself. Cheers.

therock_12 Saysthanks guys for your replies!!!!! but still confused!!!!!!........
Hi therock_12
Under the circumstances that you have mentioned, I think you have a decent chance of cracking cat. But is it IIM you are looking for or are you open to others like MDI, IMT, IMI etc. as well? I think with a little hard work you can easily bring your VA scores up. VA is the easiest part to improve. Infact just reading Charles Dickens is quite enough for excelling in RC. Besides all IIMs are set to increase their intake. Bigger ones will increase to 300 from the current 250. We are already 180. Indore will increase to 180 by this or probably the next batch. We might go to 300 as well. So the probability increases. Whats more it increases the chances for other institutes like MDI as they also increase the number of people called for GD/PI. So waiting for one more year is not that bad an idea at all.
SIMS seems to be a pretty good institute. But since it is almost entirely meant for defence junta, it will mean that it will very difficult to match upto the likes of MDI and IMI. One bad outcome is that, the kind of contacts that you build during these 2 years will not be that good. The better the students are, the better chances that your friends will reach higher in the industry. And that way you make better networks, which are very necessary in todays world. Besides the industry recognition is not that high. If you say symbi they would presume Schmrd or Sibm.
Rest is in your hands.. If you are confident enough of even getting into MDI and IMI I would suggest you take the chance..... coz there will most probably not be another MBA. And you will always carry the name of your college in your resume... always.... And believe me it makes a whole lot of difference..
People assume that you are good just by the name of the college.

Bhabesh
