Essay:
Beef Ban, Why?
Humans are broadly divided into two categories based upon their food habits, vegetarians and non-vegetarians.Vegetarians typically eat vegetables and fruits
where as non veggies eat whatever their stomach can contain. They love and
crave to eat different types of meat every time.
Recently Maharashtra government imposed a ban on
selling beef, cow meat, across the state which in turn had many eye brows
raised.
At the first sight this ban seems illogical. As a
citizen of a democratic country we have the right to eat anything we want at
any point of time. This ban seems to violate our constitutional rights but then
the question arises, why Maharashtra government imposed a ban? Are they not aware
of our constitutional rights?
There is a clear and more logical explanation of this question.
For an example, We have to wear helmet while riding a motorcycle. This is a law
which ensures safety of the rider in case of any mishap or accidents. In
Punjab, this law is slightly bent in favor of the citizens. If they are wearing
a turban, they are exempted from wearing a helmet and a penalty will not be
imposed. Why? Helmet is always preferable over turban as in case of exigencies,
helmet will provide better security as compared to a turban but as we are
citizens of a secular country, the government has to take care of the religious
needs of its citizens. Sikhs have a basic religious need to cover their head
round the clock with a turban. That is the reason, they allow Sikhs to wear
turban while driving and even in the police forces.
Similarly, for Muslim community, bulk slaughter of goats is
allowed on the occasion of Bakra-eid
despite it being banned by Indian constitution, article 48.
As we know Hindus consider cow as their holy, sacred animal. Their
religion worships cows and as a result they frown whenever cows are murdered in
the name of better taste. To cater their religious sentiments, government
imposed a ban on cow slaughter and selling its meat for consumption purposes.
Therefore, though the ban may seem vague, but we are a part of a
single country being home to numerous religions. We have to take care of
religious sentiments of one another and only then religious harmony will be
established.

I did not know how to justify, I wrote whatever I felt logical. Do tell if you have a different perspective to explain it better.
