I see a lot of discussion here regarding failure in the exam and their reasons. Let me put my 2 cents in for those who may need it (based on my UPSC failure and SBI PO success).
1. Yes, luck matters. A LOT. Some people missed out in prelims itself by a mere margin, and some got in by the same tiny margin...and those people went on to clear the whole exam. Same happened to some in mains, and now some in GDPI. Hardwork does reduce the role of luck, but it can never eliminate it. So, those who barely missed out, take heart and keep at it and ignore those who tell you otherwise. Cutoff +/- 5% are definite cases of luck.
2. People are talking about the subjectivity of GDs and PIs. First of all, YOU do not get to judge your own performance in GDPIs. What the third person percieved is more important than what you actually meant, in the exam, in the job, and in life. Having said that, no process of selecting candidates is full proof. But to change the system is not in your control. So, suck it up, take heart and move on. Decide whether you want to put yourself through the same process again. Is it worth it for you?
3. The apparent discrepancy in the descriptive test markings. Yeah, I get this one. I missed out the UPSC mains cutoff by a mere 16 marks. And that is after I was given 30 marks less than the average in the ethics paper. The most general of papers with no wrong or right answer. The paper where my answers were always appreciated and lauded during the mock tests. The paper where till this day I can't figure out what went wrong (and usually I am very good at this part). So I missed out my chance at my dream, for what seems to me as no apparent reason. But again, I can't keep feeling bad for myself forever. I have to move on. And you have to too.
After all this, I gave SBI as a back up with little to no preparation (but obviously my UPSC prep helped), and got through without a hitch. Now I have the opportunity to defer for a year and give another shot to UPSC. I suggest you do the same. If your circumstances are dire, and you need job security NOW. Go out and find a back up. Give other bank exams, insurance, or any other multitudes of exams out there. Get a back up secured, and come back with renewed vigour for SBI (if that is what you truly want).
Here is the MOST IMPORTANT thing you should not forget- One instance of failure does not define you, and you should not let it. Your day will come, just keep working at it.
Of course, one size does not fit all. So feel free to ignore my rant/advice/essay and find a solution that fits you. Whatever you decide, I hope you succeed. Good Luck!

This is for all of those who are selected and are giving advice on GDPI.Thank you but Shut up. It does not depends on you but on your panel.There are some people who bombed their interview but got 23 and those who nailed it and got 14. Lucknow Panel 2 was fckn horrible.CGM mam shattered the confidence of any one that entered the room and gave below average marks. Your suggestions and strategy doesn't help anyone.I scored 110 in mains...Nailed my GD got 16 but the interview was over in 5 mins Got 12.Tell me I don't deserve more than this.Not a single question made sense.She looked frustrated from before and rest didn't even said a single thing. If you are selected, Congratulations,but please understand You are not amazing,you are not an excellent communicator, you are not charming.You are just Lucky.
