thanks ....i always used to get confused with this....can also give some insight on the usage who/whom???
plz do post if u have knowledge about their usage:)

Hi ,
The usage of the who/whom is also similar to I and me .

Both of them are interrogative with the difference that who is used as the subject of the verb(similar to I,he,she,we) and whom is used as the object of the word(similar to me,him, her,us) .

Just rewrite the sentence to clear the doubt .
For eg:
------
This is who warned me > He warned me (not "him" warned me)
Jack is the one who wants to go > He wants to go (not "him" wants to go)
This is the man whom I told you about > I told you about him (not about "he")
Lisa is the girl with whom I'm driving to Maine > I'm driving to Maine with her (not with "she")

Hope this helps
:)
P.S :Who/whom are used very frequently as a replacement of other that nowadays in most places it hardly matters what is the usage and not considered a big mistake

5.A collection of 38 poems by Phillis Wheatley, a slave, was published in the 1770s, the first book by a Black woman and it was only the second published by an American woman.
(A) it was only the second published by an American woman
(B) it was only the second that an American woman published
(C) the second one only published by an American woman
(D) the second one only that an American woman published
(E) only the second published by an American woman

My take in Bold

nitzr7 Says
In the first sentence their is a problem with misplaced modifier. The sentence effectively means that the eyes of the man lay on the bed. So we rectify it to the second sentence given. Add to it the fact that an apostrophe followed by an 's' is in most cases where the noun is animate. So the error is not with elimination of apostrophe but with placement of modifiers. Hope you get it

Nice Explanation.....thanks

IMO
(E) second, for failing to

for failing to do X .... and failing to do Y. Only this option has 'failing' in both situations ...

Find what are wrong with the following sentences.

1)Television can attract attention of people more than anything else.
2)Hydrogen is touted the lightest gas in the world.
3)In the election of 2009, the internet emerged as the new communication media to be used by political parties to inform the voters about their agenda.

1. attract the attention ..
2. .. touted as the lightest gas ..
3. .. inform voters .. article is not needed IMO. Just mentioning voters identifies the group ... the article is redundant ..

5.A collection of 38 poems by Phillis Wheatley, a slave, was published in the 1770's, the first book by a Black woman and it was only the second published by an American woman.
(A) it was only the second published by an American woman
(B) it was only the second that an American woman published
(C) the second one only published by an American woman
(D) the second one only that an American woman published
(E) only the second published by an American woman

My take in bold (E).

Only should be as close as possible to the world it modifies . C,D are wordy whereas A,B show the parallel structure in the sentences instead of the noun .

P.S :Please provide the wrong part with an underline in the question statement and try and explain your answer if possible
