I think
1)good students like you and him should study regularly (because here we will use objective pronoun as the pronoun is the object of noun).

2)what can we do to stop them worrying about us. (in sentences containing infinitives we use objective case of pronoun)

p.s.--correct me puys if i m wrong.

1> Good students - subject
you and him - object

2> Them - objective pronoun (correct)
their - possessive pronoun

1. "Like" is a preposition, so what must follow should be a pronoun in object case. Please note the rule :

A preposition is always followed by a noun or a noun phrase, in that way the noun will act as an object of a preposition. Hence the slot after a prepostion is an object slot.

hence, "him" is correct .

2. you can even apply the same concept here. "them" is correct.

Hope this helps !!

Puys, the ones I posted are GMAT level questions... and according to me if you want to improve your verbal ability it is better to prepare by solving GMAT level questions...thereafter CAT stuff turns out to be easier... rest is your wish whatever u feel is right 😃

bingo!..like is used as a preposition here...makes sense..i know the rule..
But for the 2nd sentence we are using the objective case bcoz of the prepo?..what is the prepo here..isnt it bcoz of the transitive verb, "stop"?...correct me if needed..

MGMAT SC is a very dense book. Even people going for GMAT sometimes has problem grasping with its concept. Here is a review of it :

http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2009/11/12/manhattan-gmat-sentence-correction-gmat-preparation-guide-4th-edition-book-review

But the draw back is that it already assumes that the reader is well proficient in basic grammar. But yes, If you can invest few days only on SC - its ONE of the best bet at only around 15$.

You have pretty sound grasp of fundamentals.. what would you recommend to her.. or anyone else for that matter...

I was not suggesting Mitali to buy it.... 😃 Google is there.... If one has $ 15 to spare.. what the heck .. why not...

I found GMAT SC in general and MGMAT books in particular to be the most helpful in understanding the nuances of Grammar.

The other thing that helps is an eye for detail... I happen to read in broad strokes.. grasping the meaning and the intent of the author... that worked well for me untill I came across SC

can you please suggest which book is good for practice purpose. i am not a starter. please suggest.Chacha

I am not sure what are you asking. If your question is whether MGMAT SC is good for CAT or not, then its up to you, depending the extent of coverage and time you want to spend on SC.
Please keep in mind that GMAT has 12-13 SC ( 1/3 rd of all Verbal questions) - so this book is meant for that particular audience.

Well, that's illegal !! in what ever way you try to defend it....
MGMAT SC deserves much more credit than just 15$ .... !!

If you are using GMAT SC, you have to be bit careful for what you learn. GMAT SC not only test grammar but also meaning and style. Consider this :

I wrote the book in our leaving room. - this is an incorrect sentence in GMAT, as we are not sure what "in our leaving room" is modifying - the book or the action ( an adjective or an adverb of place).
The fact that CAT is tough cannot be denied. --- is much more inferior, stylistically, than
It cannot be denied that CAT is tough. ---- one doesn't need grammar to justify this !!

I do not know whether this kind of sentence correction is tested in CAT. If yes, you can go for GMAT SC. Or else I would ask you to stick with CAT SC only ( only CAT SC - may be you have some official CAT Material available).

Hope this helps !!

"to" is a preposition. "stop them worrying about us" is a noun phrase.

What we can do to [X]. -- X = a noun phrase.

now regarding your confusion of "Stop" - yes here its a transitive verb, but grammatically its a noun being the object of a preposition "to". Since its a transitive verb by its own, it requires a object - so "them" is the object of the verb in noun form "stop". So its "to" that determines the grammatical characteristic of "stop", which inturn will select the preposition.

Point to note - when ever a verb changes its form, a noun ( gerund and infinitive) - grammatically it behaves as a noun, but inherently its a verb and thus should have the characteristic of its own ( a transitive verb will have a object, a linking verb will have a predicate.......).

Consider this example :

A new test for AIDS has proved helpful in eliminating from the nation ₮â„Ēs blood supply blood that is contaminated with the virus.

"eliminating" is a gerund - an object of a preposition, and "blood that is contaminated with the virus." is the object of the noun - "eliminating"

Hope this helps !!
