Hi all,
My query is about shortlisting B-schools for application. Request people to share any tips/suggestions that can help one select schools to which one is most likely to be admitted. How useful are consultants in shortlisting process? And if possible share names of consultants/counselors
Hi all,

No idea about consultants. But you'd save yourself a lot of money if u do a research urself. Talk with alums, read blogs of current students and visit sites like clearadmit and accepted..
There is no clear algorithm of selecting B-schools. Still, following steps may be useful..
1) Introspect!! Know what u want out of a B-school: brand-name? int'l experience? A job in finance? consulting?? A small class-size? A big-city feel?
2) DIvide what you want into must-haves and nice-to-haves.. For example: for me, A no-cosigner loan was a must-have. So I had to drop a num of schools off my list. A big city was a nice-to-have, so i did app to Tuck, which is in middle of nowhere, but otherwise is a gr8 school.
3) Evaluate your profile as realistically as you can. Remember your profile is much more than a bundle of stats (GMAT, GPA, undergrad institute, work-ex etc).
4) Dig which schools exhaustively on basis of achievability and fit.
a) A rough idea of achievability can be had from past trends. Read last few years' thread on pagalguy, BW forums etc.
b) For fit, read current students' blogs, write to students and alums, Visit schools if u can.. If that is not a possibility, get BW guide to B-schools or clearadmit guide for corresponding school. Both of these are very gud substitutes for the visits.
5) Divide shortlisted schools by achievability into: dream, realistic and safe.
Ideally, the number must be between 5-7, but people have done well with more and less than that.
6) Apply!!
Have written this on the fly, so if u need any help with any of the steps, just write back..
