Sitting idle... need advice? What to do in current situation!

My 10th % is 81

12th % is 69
and grad 77
@Improver She can get into the top institutes if she is able to convince the interviewers of the reasons for her gap of 2 years. If the reason is simply entrance exam prep and sitting idle doing nothing else, then I guess it would be very tough.

But then like DEVILISHANGEL has said, the problems will come later on in final placements, where most of the private companies come and would not have any reservations and this gap of 2yrs also might become a problem. If any PSU is visiting then maybe she might stand a chance, provided age criterion is met (usually its 27yrs I think).
@Nipul Any full time work experience after graduation, where you are drawing a salary as a full time employee does will be considered as work exp. Also, since its your dad's retail shop you'll have a tough time convincing the interviewers even if you have salary slips.

You're ready to forego CAT/MBA, and continue in the business. Which means you're happy doing it as of now. So was just wondering why you want to do MBA?!!

You need not drop your MBA plans/dreams, because of the gap after grad, if that is your concern. You can always say you worked with your dad after graduation, but then be ready with a good reason on "Why MBA?" now. In a way its a kind of entrepreneurship (although not started by you). So maybe you can say you want a formal education before you start executing some expansion plans to take the business to the next level or something like that.

Hello everybody.. i'm another addition to the idle group..
I graduated out of symbiosis in april this year,, didn't go for the placement as there were no companies/jobs of my choice.. i was to apply for jobs but then somehow i got this idea of applying for an MBA well .. somehow i didn't prepare and missed the registration date for CAT .. i scored 143/360 in NMAT,, Didn't study Not proud of it though..!
I think it's best now to work and leave MBA for Later.. I just want to know the avg time taken to land a decent job.. I've done BBA in Corp.mngnt.. and is it necessary to go through to job consultant as i'm not finding any luck in online application.. any suggestion for good consultants in New delhi/Gurgaon? Advice required..!!

Thnks Ajai sir.. for replying...i have given CAT 2nd time in 28oct 12 ... and which field is good for doing MBA after BE in ELEX ..i think i had wasted 4 years of engineering ...My lack of knowledge led to me that bad engineering college

@Nipul Past is past. No use repenting/cribbing about it. Look for the future, and what you can do. And remember that's what interviewers will also be looking in you. What you can do, not what you did!! There is nothing like "good" field in MBA. It depends on your interest and liking of a particular area of business. @ajaygovindg Sir it would be helpful if you could give me any suggestions for my previous post!

Sir according to my academics am i elegible for IIMS?

@catinator I was typing it out, but then you see doing this in between office work, I sometimes have to minimize the screen suddenly when someone passes by!! :mg:

First be clear about "Why MBA?" before taking the decision to plunge into the world of CAT, XAT, CMAT and all that. You might have thought of it, but just saying it because the way you put it "somehow got this idea" made me wonder! :)

You still have XAT & CMAT adn some good institutes accepting those scores. So you might want to keep trying for 2013 admissions itself. But since you haven't had a chance to appear for CAT, the mother of all MBA exams in India with maximum institutes accepting the scores., its better to park MBA plans for later. A bit of work exp will also help understand the Why MBA part better.

AFAIK, yours is a unique graduation stream, so then it will have an advantage in the MBA admissions. Add some work exp to it and it will be very good. As far as finding a job now is concerned, you can try through some contacts and get your resume forwarded to some organizations, try in Naukri, Monster etc. Otherwise go ahead through some consultants if you're ready to shell out the cash. In the last part for good consultants in Delhi/Gurgaon, unfortunately I won't be able to help you. Maybe you can keep asking around to some individual puys (from Delhi/NCR) and get some idea.

hey i am mary, graduated btech 2012 batch, also siting idle at home....did not get placed. wrote CAT 2012. planning to write NMAT, XAT and CMAT.

i was just wondering....... all you people posting in this thread, who also say they are sitting idle, dont you have any pressure at home about idling away? i am only asking bcause i read a lot of the posts and none of you have mentioned anything about your parents pressuring you to get a job, stop wasting time ,etc.

i am like the youngest in the family, only one without a job. my mothers been nagging me about this.
also the fact that my neighbor (same age as me 21) got placed at every possible hi-fi company s out there ,does'nt help.

so yeah im just fishing here.....can anybody relate to my situation?

@ajaygovindg Thank you for the reply sir.. and sorry for the re post,, i didn't want anyone to skip it.. well the question isn't WHY MBA? really as it is WHY MBA NOW? as i know an mba degree is very much important seeing the current market scenario .. the only question was if Great institutes like IIMs, FMS, ISB, etc 'prefer' candidates with work ex, and it adds to your overall profile ,,then why jump to it ..now my only worry is..can a person really study well enough to be eligible(score wise) for admission in the top 20 Bschools category while working, earning and living that independent life(you know what i mean)? and also will i get a decent job with my BBA degree? sorry for so many questions.. get came out of an NMAT bubble burst.!!
@m_bnth Mary , of course there is pressure and not only the external(mummy , papa, uncle , aunty, Bhaiya , didi, padosi, Padosi ke Graduated bacche ), but also the internal pressure(the voice in your head asking you what the hell you're upto , the worst kind of pressure),, but you have to ignore it , as much as possible, it is but natural that they(your parents) will worry for you, they're made that way,, but you have to focus on using this time to the best way possible, cz you will not get it back, re asses your goals, revaluate your potential , find out your passion and desires,, and work towards them..
its always better to take your time and choose your steps carefully , rather than succumbing to the pressure, jumping at the first thing that comes your way and then blaming others for the rest of your life! think about it!
Also if your parents ask you about your plans , discuss it with them,, if they're not very supportive.. i have one line for you to learn.."It might appear to you that i'm sitting idle.. but one day i'll make you proud"
Best of luck,, Every crisis is an opportunity,, and every failure is a learning experience.. always be positive..!
@m_bnth Well I can't relate to your situation. But all I can tell you is parents are always thinking its for your good. They still keep comparing it with their times when people used to take up any job that comes by and then get settled!! And in your case being a girl they're sure to start your plans to get you settled assuming that's what is important.

Speak with them and try making them realize that career is also equally important for you. Try telling them that you're not sitting idle, but doing things which will make them proud of you later. Try once, try twice & a third time. If they still don't understand forget it, they're never going to understand!!! You just keep going and take things and tackle issues (if any) one by one as it comes.

All this said, rather than sitting completely idle you can also try doing some things. Some suggestions:
1. Some certification related to your area of interest in MBA
2. Associate with some NGO and give back to society when you have the time
3. Keep trying for some job
4. Do some live projects/internship (Check out www.letsintern.com. I'm not sure if they have only for post-graduates or there is something for graduates)
@catinator Honestly MBA is not that important from a market standpoint! There are so many go-getters, who are hard working and passionate about what they do and are surviving even without an MBA!! But then yes if you want to rise up the corporate ladder without any roadblocks in between then its better to complete your education as soon as possible. Once you have worked for 2-3 years getting back into study-mode is not going to be that easy, foregoing the the salary you earn & most importantly the independence!

If you have the will power and the dream to make it big then yes, you can do the preparations even while working & being independent to get through in one of the top 20 B-schools. I didn't make it to top 20, but if it gives you any solace, I had work exp of 29 months when I went for MBA. But then I kept myself going with the preparations and PG and many people I met here is one reason which kept me motivated. So keep logging in here, meet/speak with like-minded people, CAT-maulers, the underdogs, the alumni/oldies and so many others which will help a lot. 😃 There is nothing like the top institutes prefer work exp candidates over freshers (except for ISB). They look for an equal mix of both to maintain the batch diversity (work exp/fresher, graduation stream, gender etc.) and the different thoughts/ideas in the classroom. Any graduation has its value. Why are you concerned about yours being BBA? In fact it is probably the only course which is in reality a precursor to an MBA degree! So you have already learnt some basics, and so the best person to be in a class for MBA and then do a job in the field! :)
hey puys, there's another story but with little different plots and twists. till 10 life was on track but after that in quest of attaining speed my engine derailed and now struggling to attain the momentum . life's engine has been on and off track in between .
graduated in BTech from a not so reputed clg in 2011. never eyed CAT always thought of clearing JMET & FMS , as till last year they used to conduct separate entrance exams ,so joined an IT company , then the fate took a turn and was bound to appear in CAT coz both of the exams merged themselves in CAT. had to leave the job preapred for it for only 1 month
got 81%ile and 92%ile in XAT . then started giving some govt exams also cleared IBPS specialist officers exam ( the last good news)
conference out in AFSB.
till entering the engineering field i was fascinated and keen on becoming a technocrat but in my second year destiny and my heart both took a vicious turn , due to some coincidence i got to realize my potential in writing and when i started to take it seriously , i was appreciated because of my work , so only completed BTech only for the sake of a degree.
i ve also realized ths without financial stability freelance writing is not a fruitful profession in india , so for that financial stability i am keen in doing MBA from a good clg , so that i can pursue my dream besides this without having any fear of crisis.
my profile is
10- 84%
12- 68%
BTech- 65%
not working anywhere now , but i do write for some online forums
here are link of some of my works. you all can comment on that also

suggestions are cordially invited on any of the things mentioned above
@catinator
@ajaygovindg

thanks for the replies...... 😃
i've been feeling kinda low. i guess things will get better eventually.

“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
Steve jobs (awesome guy 😃 )

Sir I'm planning to do MBA in Petroleum or power mngmt as I want to work with PSU. Is it a correct decision or should I focus on core mngmnt fields?

@technoarpit If that's what you want then go ahead!! Depends on your interest. If Marketing, Finance, IT etc. is what you are interested in & want to build your career then go for them. But then, it will not be that easy getting into PSU's from the campus itself after graduating in core fields from the institutes offering General MBA programmes. Not that its impossible, but then, there are very limited institutes the PSU's visit and recruit from.

Sir I'm looking for off-campus placement bcoz on-campus PSU placements have already got a ban this year from chennai high court.....

@technoarpit Oh yeah. Forgot that. Sorry. My bad!

So then it completely depends on what kind of profile/career you're looking for. I'm not sure of kind of profiles that were being offered to students at institutes like SPM, RGIPT etc. (other than in the PSU's of course!). Maybe you can read through relevant threads of last year and find out. And then compare them with profiles after doing MBA in Marketing, Finance, IT etc. and take a call.
