1.Would I apply to the same college next year....in case I dont make it at the other biggies this year? The chances are that I would
2.Can I change the admission process?? ... Well I jolly well cannot
3.Am I despondent about the process ?... It mite appear to be so
All said and done...... is this reason enough for me or anyone for that matter to say that I shouldnt express my disgust at the admission process??
I dont think so. I accept that this is a crazy selection procedure but that we have to live with it. Yet, what got me going wat the self righteous indignation that some people expressed when the selection procedure was berated. Defenders of the hallowed portals of SPJain, I do not question the integrity of the college nor can I berate the overall capabilities of the institution. It is and will remain a great institution to do your MBA in. But that does not mean that the selection procedure is above questioning.
To the guyz who got the calls, I would sincerely say that, the question is not whether you have got the call or not. The cruz of the matter is that a lot of deserving candidates dint make it and that too at the cost of some very undeserving ones. For people to blindly defend the admission procedure and call it admirable is saad...( not referring to you jinxdjonx....referring to some earlier posts). That the selection procedure at SPJain is fundamentally filled with faulty logic has to be accepted. Most importantly guys with the calls should understand that they have been very lucky with the calls cause they are benefiters of a faulty process ( not all of them.....but a significant number surely)
Thats all the more reason to prepare harder for your interviews. Anywayz I dont intend to hurt anyone's ideas or feelings here. I dont mind loosing..... but I sure mind being declared a looser inspite os scoring more goals that the opponent...if u get what I mean.
In fact I would like to add that the guys with calls are very lucky in another sense also. If these guys apply next year with the same essays, then there is a good chance that the SPJain adcom may not find their essays appealing due to some reason and reject their profiles. (Please guys, I am not wishing you guys any ill. Congrats to you on your calls. And I would have to be a fool to wish ill on any PGite).
I am just trying to tell you guys that though you may vehemently defend the selection process, you are being really unfair to people who got calls last yr, but not this year with the same essays. It is really insensitive to say that these guys have not been selected for reasons like the adcom's preferences changed.
there are a host of aspects of life that are so grossly faulty that you cant comprehend their iniquitous effects. but what do people choose to do, ignore or berate. can we do more, ofcourse we can.do we, no.
go to a goverment hospital, in the ER esp, chances are that you 'll have to keep wailing away in pain before nurse comes and pokes you with her finger to see, whther you are alive or dead.
go to a criminal court, you'll have to spend a lifetime to file a case..and another to see it through.
but people choose to ignore things till it affects them. i myself, indulge in this kind of behaviour. so i dont blame others when they do so. but i do feel that all this talk about the whole selection process being wrong , is being directed in the wrong direction.
when unrest develops over the unfair or partial intonations of a process it culminates into something fruitful or consequential only when, something is done about it. all the points being given on this thread are merely wasted, because they are not reaching the right ears, (or eyes)
i would love to see more transparency in the process, but somehow i believe i have no right to complain if iam not doing anything to bring about a change. i would not want my woes to be vented out in vain.
""You ask me why I do not write something....I think one's feelings waste themselves in words, they ought all to be distilled into actions and into actions which bring results. " Florence Nightingale
words are powerful too, but only when they reach their intended target audience. yes its nice and invigorating to discuss all facets of an issue , with peers. but it is to no avail.
"Strong reasons make strong actions. " shakespeare
and in life we come across strong reasons when, we are dealt with in an unfair manner, when we are wronged. Will someone who has got a call react? no why would they, they are quite happy, with the state of things.
although its not the way it should be, but still its upon the others to iron out the kinks in the whole process.
This whole spjain admission business has become one where only people who have sources in SPJain and can ask them what kind of answers to write can get calls. What about all those folks who have no 'friends' to advise them on their essays? Is it their fault?
dude i dnt agree with any of ur above claims.i dont h've a contact at spj and i wrote my essays on my own.
now talkin bout colleges in the us, they do give a lot of priority to ur "sop's nd reco letters" ( am talkin bout the top institues for pursuing ur Ms). a guy (my senior) with a gre score of 1200 gets an offer from stanford but one with a score of 1460 doesnt. academically they were equally proficient, both scoring around 84% in their engg. wat made d day for the person with a score of 1200 was his sop.
moving on to the issue of hired-guns who write ur essays. this malody is already in excistence.there was an article in Et which spoke bout how a no. such organisations h've cum up offering help to candidates.when one of the profs at harvard was askd bout this, all he said was they cud identify all the essays tat r being written by the same ppl.if they can do it so to can the profs at spj.
bout how transparent the selection procedures r at other coll.. take for ex iimb. a friend of mine with a percentile of 98.1 ( with 86 in quants) :!: :!: :!: has got a call, no work-ex,he actually droped a yr 2 prepare for cat. now how wud u justify this?????
lastly bout the selection proc at spj,am sure every person who had applied wud h've known tat the essays were of paramount imp.no pt pointing fingers now....
hi all.... i too applied to spj and ended up with no call.....no regrets....there might be better people than me...... but what i doubt is that r they really better than me????? i mean if acads have to carry their weightage....its ok...as it is in quantitative terms...or for that matter even work ex..... but i really question the concept of attaching so much importance to essays just to shortlist the candidates for gd pi....which in all probabilities can be total bluffing on the part of applicant..... is it not a practical idea to actually call on the basis of credentials other than essays and justify the validity of essays in the final interview ....which might lend a bit of credibility to the whole process.... atleast it will not lead to random elimination of genuine candidates which i m sorry to say has indiscriminately happened....
That was a great post Jinxdjonx.... I totally emphatise with it since I too have ranted and raved abt the arbit nature of SP calls before finally shrugging it off with a "chuck it..stuff happens n thr aint nothin u can do abt it"... and I know that had I been one of the lucky (now thts an important word) ones I'd have hardly bothered about the inconsistencies in the procedure... thats the reason I hadn't posted nethin out here... coz i know that like so many I too would have pushed my head in sand like an ostrich, had the matter not landed right at my doorstep and shook me out of my 'thrs nuthin called as luck..its jst u' world... N i guess we'd better stop agonising and letting it rankle ne further... Move on...Thr r other calls to concentrate on... N the SP call-getters got to concentrate on thr nxt round instead of havin to defend gettin selected
For the record: scored 99.59... good essays tht i spent a mth on and got approved by half a dozen experienced ppl...decent acads ... freshie
no need to study thruout the yr just fill cat form just buy spj form catch some HR guy OR a counsellor he will write some good essay for u u may get a call easy na......... it's other thing that u might not convert but u will get a call at cost of some genuine ones who didn't get to prove oneself ..................... PS- this is not for all those sincere and deserving call getters sorry if i anyway hurts you.BUT IT HAPPENS . all the best to all callgetters for GI .
Hi Frens, My interview slot is on Feb20th. I plan to leave chennai on Feb 18th morning by train. Nebody planning to have the travel on the same day, pls lemme know. We can travel 2ghtr and share our anxiety. Basically I am working a Software company...
Please reply ASAP so that ticket booking will be easier.
the point i want to make is: "Don't bash OR defend something you do not completely understand"
well said.... its time to move on to other goals...... otherwise we will be left breaking our heads over something we cannot change....and lose out on time which could have been utilized better elsewhere.....
was wonderin wat i wud answer for the question : "What if you dont make it thru this yr? " am a 4th yr engg student so is it a good strategy if i tell the panel tat i h've been placed in a leading s/w company thru campus placements( have the offer letter with me,in case they wana check-up)...
this answer cud be viewed in multiple contexts though...
1. i am good enough for the company. 2. i dnt h've a clear career path in mind. 3. i am betrayin d company's trust in me by breakin their 2yr bond
wats ur take on this guyz? wat do i do? plz do pour in the suggestions...

chao shaju
dont mention the bond dude......i dont think they'll want to see ur offer letter so u need not divulge the bond info to them.....
so u cud say that u r confident of making it this year(u need to put this very carefully w/o sounding overconfident), but u have a job in a leading s/w company just as backup.......this may even project u as a good planner instead of the 3 negative points u mentioned.......but all this is gonna depend in the tone which u speak and pray god its not gonna be a stress interview, coz there even the right tone will bring out an awkward response from the panel 😃
For those interested my vitals are : CAT : 97.11 (But a Pathetic 63%ile in Eng) BE (CS) : 78 XII : 87 X : 87 Working as a Consultant for the last 7 months.
My guess is SPJAIN's selecttion criterion for calls is :
Work ex - 20% Cat Score - 20% Acads - 20% Essays - 40 %
Cheers Akshat
I do not quite agree with these stats. Last year i got call from SPJIMR. My work ex was zero that time. CAT score was 91 percentile. As regards acads I was 10th in my class from a batch strength of 40. Hence my feeling is that for initial call they see only essays. after a candidate goes through group interview round do they consider work-ex and CAT score etc for final selection.
CAT Percentile 90.56 Work Ex- 5 years Acads-82/80/80 Active Participant in Social Service Activities Two Professional Awards as well.

what was asked in ur interview both 1st and 2nd round. and u for which specialisation mate....
First round was on hobbies and accomplishments. You need to be thorough with what you write in your essays. For eg if its photography..atleast be sure of the camera details that you use....similarly...need to be convincing with your answers for why mba, why Finance type questions..tell your answer to a mate and ask if there is any loop hole in that.
Concenttation-IM
Second Round by Diff panel (Most questions were common except a very few which were more like a clarification) 1)Each one of you introduce yourself? Please go clockwise. 2)Give me your personal and professional Achievements? Reverse order this time. 3)Give us your opinion about Talk shows like those in NDTV. Dont discuss Please give us your thoughts one by one? 4)Do you like watching TV? How many of you do that? 5)Okay now whats the difference between a Koffee with Karan show and a Simi Garewal show? 6) Give us the name of one TV show, which you think has some substance? Each one of you in clockwise direction. 7)Do you feel Tense? Is this like a formal Interview? Are we not making you guys feel comfortable what do you guys feel. Tell us one by one. Okay lets do a rapid fire. We will give you the name of a personality. Tell us in one sentence a plus and a minus point of the person. Dont take too much time. (Ganguly, Abdul Kalam, KR Narayanan, George Bush, Saddam Hussein etc) 9)Each one of you tell us something about the SPJIMR campus. Do you feel its very small. 10) To wind it up what do you guys feel abt the conversations we had will it help us in selecting the most eligible candidate. 11)This is not a part of your interview. Tell us about any difficulties you had in finding the place?
