thanx...
regards.
sumesh
Even I have the same doubt,Is it not
just a normal reference letter ?
Because otherwise they would have specifically
mentioned about recommendation letter
Seniors please help us out !!!
Thanks
Guys it's just a normal character reference letter from someone senior in age or experience
Robin
1 thing more is disturbing me.Have the pg guys become so selfish that they do not want to post their experiences at Tapmi.Come on guys -why dont u wanna share ur experiences???!!
Robin
hi jacob4uin,
it isnt that PG ites have become selfish. from the notes that we all excahnged after our gds we realised that all the groups had teh same topics. even the extempore topics were the same.
the GD was a case study....and we had 15 people in one group. The case study was that of a hospital ( i dont have time to check the thread so i dont know if im being redundant here)... teh nurses arent ready to work the night shifts so they are facing an HR prob. this lady, shirley, tells the mgmt that a sal hike of 15% for this shift will be an incentive to get the nurses to work..but mgmt is worried about costs and a domino effect wherein all will ask for a rise. the gd was mroe or less on these lines.
the extempore topics were general in nature...just based on whatyou have gathered as an individual over the years. teh topic i chose out of the three given to me was..." women- are they the weaker sex?"
the interview varied slightly from person to person in intensity. on day 1 apparently everyone was grilled on basics. on day2...most of the people i spoke to including me, got off easy onbasics. in fact i almost felt the panel was disinterested in me.
teh directors int is another formality where they either ask a lot of qns or have a general chat. mine was a general chat...on bangalroe, my being from MCC, the location of my office, etc.
there you go....another experience put up on PG. hope it helped.
i've just come back frm Manipal after my TAPMI GD/PI. and this is how my experiences went ...
The Journey
------------------
v reached Mangalore at 06:30 am by a private bus, and reached the local bus station by an auto. auto fare was much low as Rs.15.00 even tho the timing was odd. there frm v'd a bus to Udupi and that journey is somewhat 60 km's long and u'll 've to pay Rs.29.00. u'll see NITK, Surathkal and some industrial estates. it tuk around 1.5 hrs to reach Udupi. u gotta get another bus to Manipal which is a Rs. 4.00 journey.
The Place & The People
--------------------------------
the whole town is a campus. u cannot c a big town or something. u can cover the entire Manipal in half an hour. almost anything and everything is related to colleges in a way or another. no big shopping malls or movie halls visible. the buildings r not continuous, they're scattered. u'll never feel like a city, its just like a big campus. if u r frm a metro u'll find this place deserted, and if u r frm a medium sized town u'll feel like home. public is very helpful and sincere, and so is auto drivers in particular. average age of Manipal is definitely in the early twenties. a lotsa boyz and galz, all kind of'em. (trivia: its hard to find two or more galz together in Manipal, either they r all alone, or with their bf 😉 hahahaa...)
The Accomodation
---------------------------
v got down in front of famous Kasturba Medical College and tuk an auto to Hotel Baliga (Rs.12.00). this hotel is mentioned in the information letter. unfortunately v cldn't find any rooms there, but they pointed us to Hotel Vijaya Residency, which is a wonderful hotel. Hotel Vijaya Residency charges u Rs. 250/day for a double room with TV and cable connection. there were three of us, still they dint charge us anything extra. the staff is very cordial. they provided us extra sheets, towels and pillows. they've a generator, so no power shortage probs. they also provide u water heaters. there's a small restaurant down, and u can order things thru fone. this restaurant is gud for light meals. the check-in/out time limit is 24 hrs, which v crossed by 12 hrs, still they dint charge us extra !! v'd a small prob with the lock of the door, which was solved immediately and efficiently. altogether v r extremely happy with the accomodation.
The Food
------------
it depends, obviously, on ur tastes. i personaly liked the tastes, rates and the variety. there r plenty of hotels, restaurants and the likes. almost all of them r low/medium scale hotels, the charges and the tastes r also fine. u can've typical south Indian stuffs like dosa, vada and idli, fast foods like sandwich, fried rice etc. some offer u chinese things, which i dint opt.
The Institute (An aspirant view)
-----------------------------------------------
what u c in the brochure is the admin building. there's one more building where the classes run. the auditorium is medium sized, which is the only room i cld visit. there's a computer centre also. TAPMI men's hostel is actually one block of Manipal Institute of Technology' hostel. there'll b two persons in one room and one bathroom attached common for two rooms. that in turn means, the max length of the q in 'rush hrs' is 4. no internet connectivity in each room, but there's a computer centre in each floor with round the clock connectivity. each computer room has six computers. most of the dissertion submissions r done online. i wld mention that the hostel surroundings r really shabby (i cldn't see the inside of the rooms). the students r really proud abt their insti (they shd b), and most of them 've their own vehicles, which seemed inevitable. u've to reach the hostel latest by 11:00 pm. no boozing or fagging allowed inside the hostel. boozing never happens inside, but fagging is somewhat ok inside the rooms, but never in the aisles. if caught red handed, u'll b fined in the range of Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000. but if the offense is serious, u r out !! no second thots. technically, u shd've permission to go to any place other than Uduppi and Mangalore. students do go out, but at their own risk. also, TAPMI is really strict abt the attendence.
The X-perience
---------------------
as it is mentioned in the call letter, u gotta report in the admin block at 08:30 am. there'll b five lists published. each list 'll 've 15 - 18 names. ensure that ur name is there in the list. if its absent there, dont b panic. it simply means they haven't received ur acknowledgement letter. u might've sent it, still there's a chance for missing. just show ur call letter in the counter, and they'll give u a slot. so, carry ur call letter with u. TAPMI has a Xerox counter, so if u wanna take some fotostats, u may make use of that. but, as u know, its always better to do things in advance, u better carry copies of all the required documents. u'll 've to submit the copies there, including the original of reference letter.
The Presentation
------------------------
there's a powerpoint presentation in the auditorium. this 'll start by 08:40 am. a faculty member 'll give u the introduction, and then u gotta watch the presentation. this presentation contains almost all the same things mentioned in the brochure. after the presentation, u may get ur doubts clarified. its an open forum. during this session, they told that the campus 'll b shifted to a new one in 2006. so, if u r admitted this time, u'll pass out frm the new campus.
The Panel
--------------
as mentioned earlier, there'll b five groups. each group is monitored by a panel of three or four members (most probably three). this may include faculty members, industry personalities, senior TAPMI'ans etc.
The GD
----------
the entire grp is arranged in 'U' shape, all in armed chairs with a writing pad. the 'U' is clossed to form 'D' by the panel members. all the GD's conducted so far were case studies. an assistant 'll distribute the case paper to all the candidates. u may mark, write, underline or whatever in the paper itself. the points r awarded on five criteria, which was mentioned in my grp, but dint in many other. its all abt ur attitude in general. i dont remember the exact points, but they were something like analytical skills, linguistical skills, tolerance for various ideas, approach and posture. and in my grp, it was specifically mentioned that ur 'Lung Power' is NOT awarded here !! also, read ur case, learn and analyse it until they say 'Start'. no prize waiting for u to b the first voice raised, except for the harsh words frm the panel, beware of that.
so far, for a given day, the cases were the same for all the grps. on the first day the case was abt a manager. he's very effcient and strict. he performs well in mumbai. but their chennai branch is a mess. now this person is assigned the chennai charge. he comes here, fires three senior ppl, brings the branch to the super league. then he's transferred again to mumbai with promotion. someone else takes charge of chennai, but he's very frank with his subordinates. but the performance of the chennai branch comes down. now what to do ? bring back the mumbai guy or not ? was he rite in sacking three ? etc.
on the second day, it was abt a hospital. gud hospital, medium one. adequate staff strength, but night shifts r understaffed. there're some allowances and all already in place. one ms. shirley suggests an increase in this. various probs in the night shifts r listed out. and u gotta get into the shoes of shirley and Mr. shyam who is the manager. solve the issue, assuming u r shirley and shyam.
third day topic, i'm not able to recollect now. whatever, not a tuf one. solution is easy in almost all the cases. no ethical dilemma kinda thing, just ur approach does matter.
The Summary of GD
-----------------------------
u'll 've to summarize the GD, in somewhat 10 minutes. in some grps, they were asked to analyse the case and solutions, regardless how the GD went. but in certain grps, they were asked to summarize 'the GD'. so, before the summary writing, listen to the instructions carefully, dont take this lightly. and do as the panel said. coz, its them who r gonna choose u. this too has some parameters like handwriting, legibility, grammer, structure etc.
(Continued in the next post ................)
The Extempore
----------------------
a box is passed arnd. it'll contain chits. u may open the box and take a chit, when the person before u starts to speak. the logic is this, each person has three minutes to think and three minutes to talk. so, u can've the first luk at ur topic when the person before u starts to speak. when he completes his three minutes, u'll b ready to speak. even if that person stops before three minutes, u can continue to think till the three minutes mark. so, dont waste ur time.
in extempore also, they're measuring u in five aspects. again i dont remember the exact parameters they've mentioned, still they're something like ur english language skills, presentation skills, oration, tone and accent, stress for points and the modulation.
the chit that u pick up 'll contain three topics, and u've to speak abt 'ONLY ONE TOPIC'. many ppl tried to correlate all the three topics provided, coz they paid little attention for the instructions. and i met somebody who tried to connect the three topics "population explosion, cozes and solutions", "women r better man-managers than men" and "thinking positively" !!!! some of the other topics were "pride and prejudice spoil relationships", "ur most admired bznz personality", "can v 've single childed families", "foren channels r threat to our culture", "ur partner in ur dreams", "rani mukherjee, preity zinta and aish, who's the numero uno", "enter the dragon, china the next world power", "the next target is Iran", "Sachin's graph is running down", "Sania Mirza, the next Indian idol" .. the list goes on.
after the extempore, u gotta submit all the records u've broght in (only the xerox copies r reqd.) this include the reference letter, ur acadamic credentials, exeperience certificates, achivements (xtra/co curricular activities, sports/arts, professional), memberships etc. ppl r bringing in all kinda reference letters, frm eminent personalities, principals, managers etc. i've seen both conduct certificates (general format) and personal recomendation letters. so its upto u to decide. but the general trend is to get somebody vouch for u specifically. i aint sure how significant this letter is.
The Panel Interview
-----------------------------
u'll 've ur panel interview on the same day itself. if ur number is anything below five, ur i'view 'll b in the after noon session. u can expect panel i'view in either way, cordial or stress. in my case it was perfectly cordial. they asked abt my hobbies for some 10 minutes, then abt something abt my state, ppl there, attitude and the like. then i'd some superficial tech qns related to my engg grad. whenever i'd to answer based on a concept i dint knew, they explained it more than twice, without any probs. they never tried to stress me. no acad screw up too. all the acad qns were too obvious for a mech engg'r. if ur performances in GD and extempore r way apart, u may b asked to explain.
hey, be true to self, whenever u try to manipulate urself, its sure that u'll b trapped. especially abt ur hobbies, ur interests etc. b sure abt all the decisions in ur life, like shifting jobs and all. eco/b.com students, brush up ur acads. engg'rs, its better to've ur basics polished. in my case, it was perfectly alright. but qns were asked on carnot and diesel cycle for mech engg'rs, dsp for elec, sm for civil. also some portions of differentiation and partial differentiation, laplace transforms (!!!) ... and workex ppl, pls ensure that u know how to describe ur routine jobs. once more abt hobbies, just b prepared. reading ? then y reading, which books, authors, again y, categories ....... the list is endless. if u say music, genres songs, singers, lyrics .....
so my suggestion is this, dont b prejudiced. dont ever think that all the candidates answered all the questions asked. there'll b times u may've to say 'i dont know', then, dont mind doing it.
and the stress and normal, i dont think any of the forms offer better chances. so dont b losehearted if ur i'view is a stressed one. absolutely no difference btn workex and fresh, both get both, ie. regardless their workex status it may go in stress way or normal way. i met somebody who's already a manager with 5 yr xp, who'd a stress i'view.
The Psychometric Test
--------------------------------
there's no such thing going on, atleast for the first three days ;)
The Essay Writing
--------------------------
again, this depends on ur number. if its anything beyond eight, most probably u'll 've it on the next day. it precedes Director's interview. u gotta write "Based on ur life experiences and the career options considered (list them), how an MBA 'll help u in achieveing ur career goals ?". u'll get twenty minutes to do this. make sure that u write ur CAT and TAPMI numbers in the spaces provided.
The Directors Interview
----------------------------------
this goes in the same way as indicated by the picture in the brochure. four of the senior most ppl, with/without director himself, 'll interview u. its a warm session. just some personal qns, workex qns and the like. the affair is over within a max of 10 minutes. dont take this lightly, just think, all the four - the senior most of the TAPMI, dont mess with them. but so far, no stress sessions hrd frm this panel.
to conclude, lemme tell u this, if u've any prbs regarding admission procedures, like the train is late, urgency to leave, reservation problems etc., do contact admissions office. they r very helpful as long as ur prbs r genuine. but dont pester them for the luxury of doing so. they r bz ppl, and into the bznz for a long time. they can easily contrast btn the rt and wrong. so, i found a candidate who got some cane for forging. but plenty of ppl 've received help frm the admissions office. make use of their service, if u r in real need to do so.
all the best for all the TAPMI aspirants,
wish and pray to meet u ppl in TAPMI,
bubye,
Rick.

Hey RNX
great post buddy. The pic's completely clear now.Seems like Tapmi is a great instt to be in with a great and understanding faculty.:)
All the best to u RNX and all the best to everybody else:thumbsup:
Hi RNX
Your post was amazing. I am sure you are fit to be a student in any of the top management institutes. Your language, observation, empathy, coherent narration and above all your helping tendency to keep all of us informed in detail - are commendable. On behalf of all PGites lemme thank you and wishing you all the best in getting admitted in a school of your choice. Kudos mate!
karthik
i'm delighted to know that my post helped to alleviate ur agitated and anxious minds. actually, i was lukin for some xp sharing like this prior to my GD/PI. and now it was my turn, and i did. thank u for all ur complements.
i wld like to mention one more i'view tip, that is, TAPMI doesn't offer any specialisations as such. one of my frens (cs engg'r, 1.5 yrs xp MNC) was asked abt his chosen area of specialisation, he said systems. and the director's i'view panel member shot back, "TAPMI is not the place for u"!!. tone was light, but not so the contents, isn't it ? atleast none of us wanna hear such a thing frm our i'view board. as per my info, this was the harshest words came out frm Director's panel so far (apart frm these words, his entire process was perfectly ok). another friend (mech engg'r, 2 yrs xp, now entrep'r) had the same qn in panel i'view, he floated over like "i'm keeping my options open, only after first yr.. bla bla bla". but in btn, he accidently pronounced 'Mktng'. and there was a flurry of qns like 'what's mktng, what's the difference btn mktng and sales, how do u mkt this and that ..'. based on this xp, someone on next day dint mention any spec, so the qn poised was "if u rn't sure abt ur spec in mba, r u sure u wanna've an mba ?" (it was a stress i'view). so pals, b imaginative.
during our open forum session, one candidate asked the faculty member 'which is the strong hold of TAPMI'(among fin, mktng, hr and systems), the answer was 'management'. as per the revised curriculum of TAPMI u r choosing the papers for the second yr. as it is clarified during my panel board i'view, u can 've any of the options like three papers of fin and one paper of mktg, one hr ... like that. they call it 'flexible specialisation'. dunno gud or bad,but this cld b another reason for "y TAPMI".
carry some reading materials or something like that to keep urself engaged for a possible waiting span of 3.5 hrs at max. in my case, i reported for my panel i'view at 02:00 pm, and was called for the i'view at 05:30 pm - the last one to leave the auditorium !!. moreover, there was some qns based on today's headlines for some candidates. again, lemme tell u, if u cldn't get the papers, tell'm so. dont dont dont ever b stressed ... okey.
something abt dress code, u'll c all kinda combi over here. for boyz, most popular one is formal trousers, full sleeved shirts, shoes, and tie. some ppl do wear blazers, two of them in my grp. and there was a candidate on the first day who wore a stone wash jeans and a funk kinda half sleeved shirt !!. another handsome guy on first day wore black shirt and dark grey trousers !! both of them completed the entire process 😉 and for galz, churidar all the way. that too all variety, like full sleeved, with collars, very small sleeves (almost sleeveless). gals also wear typical euro style formal dress like 'wrap around skirts'/pants, shirts/tshirts, coats and shoes.
abt the folder u gotta carry, actually its needless !!. what all u gotta carry is the xerox copies, and once they r submitted ur hands cld b let free. but then u dont feel like going for an i'view, isn't it ? hence everybody is carrying around a folder with/without records !! leather, leaved, plastic ... all kinda folders r in place. i carried my original records (needless) and some xtra/co curricular certi's in my leather folder (sorry dad, i'm not gonna give it back :p) i know one boy and one gal, who went in for the i'views empty handed. this gal, she simply tuk one pen and one pencil in her hand and walked in !!. (man, i've a very strong feeling that gals r more gutsy these days 😉 )
that's it for now frens, anything specific, feel free to ask.
NB: call me Rick, that's my name :D
regds,
Rick.
Hey Rick
adi poli stuff.By the way how far is Royal International from Tapmi?
Thanx for the additional info buddy
Robin
Can someone throw light on the format about the reference letter ??
Is it mandatory ??
Please help me out ...
hello to all PGites.... and all the very best to people who are yet to give their TAPMI INTERVIEWS.
mine is on 19th Feb. 8.30 am. will share my experience once i am through it. my percentile is 91.2
Reading all the experiences so far, guys i say, CONFIDENCE is the key. its not the answer that matters. HOW YOU ANSWER is what matters. be cool. be confident.
regarding REFERENCE LETTER, it should be preferably from your Principal, Vice-Principal or H.O.D.
first para - the capacity in which the person knows you etc.. (as a teacher, mentor)
second para - that you are a good n dedicated student and all that...
third para - some of your achivements in the college / institution.
fourth para - that he / she highly recommends you for the PGDM course at TAPMI
last line - wishin you all the best for future etc...
I don't say this is "THE FORMAT" for a reference letter. but it is definitely a good way to support your candidature. i got this approved by two heads of coaching centres also.
any more questions... feel free to ask. will try to reply.
ALL THE VERY BEST !!!!!
JUST KEEP THE FAITH !!! 😃
abhisek.
hi guys,
just gave the gd,summary of the gd,extempore and panel interview.
was good, the topic for the gd was that a person(some mr. mehra,i am not about name)is very efficient and also very polular among the bank employees and customers but is opposed to any new technolgy(he is 4,now he wants to head a new branch which is opening and directly writes to the higher boss(kohli) rather than first going to his imediate boss(sanjay, not sure though).question was as the mr. kohli wat wud u do. with good ppl in my panel(panel 1) i believe there was a good intercation though it was tending to become a fish market but we somehow managd to control it.....was myself trying to summrise it but fell short by few minute,so one advice to all keep track of time,i believe it is always good if u take the initiative to summarise....anyways were then asked to summarise the gd,did that though not in 200 words as we were asked to....anyways..the extempore like u all r aware of had three topics and had to speak for 3 minutes on any one.now friends listen....THIS IS PLAIN LUCK...MY TOPIC AT SIBM(FOR ESSAY) WAS it is nice to be important but more important to be nice AND GUESS WHAT IT WAS ONE OF THE TOPICS I WAS GIVEN TO SELECT FROM FOR THE EXTEMPORE IN TAPMI,was delighted, was crazy with joy, spoke well i guess.....
other topics which i remember were
1.my funniest moment(the guy spoke extremely well)
2.love is essential for peace of mind
3.unconventional in hindi movies
4.wat i did in my last vacations
and other topics which i dont remeber...
anyways then came the interview...the panel asked me following questions
1,are u khush right ow(my name is kush,so get the pun here)
2.who all r there in the family
3.why are ur score decreasing from class tenth to fianl semester
4.why do u have a grace in few subjest(am from engineering background)
5.i had replied i was nopt sure wat to do in 12th so ws cross questioned that then that means never trust ur parents as u say they made u do engineering(had convince them on this...was successful i guess
6.was then asked shud grace marks system be there.replied no,was again asked that then u shud not be here coz we don`t have any such system in tapmi, had to convince them again.
they then turne to acads and asked what i liked in mechanical replied internal combustion engines and operations research.
7.was then asked to advice hinm what bike to go for in terms of engine specifiactions
said splendour(my bike)asked me related questionssome of which i answered some i was not able to so frankly said that i dont know)
8.what kind of engine is electrical engine used intrains
was not sure for this but still confidently replied that it is an external combustion engine..not sure though(anyone please help on this....)
9.now u can go.
well not sure about my questions related to acads so there is some doubt over my performance, though i believed that i hadled the stress part quite easily....
anyways for ppl who have thier interview lined up....will say one thing just be confident....don`t let them feel that ur nervous they will literally slaughter u...i mean it....beleve in urself.....all the best..
have the director`s interview tomorow...hoping that it goes fine....last hope....
take care everyone...
