I am 2nd year student at the Tippie School of Management.
My profile details :
GMAT : 710
Work Experience : Almost 5 years
Industry: IT ( Tata Consultancy Services)
Education: Computer Engineer
Summer Internship : Pearson Education, Inc.
I am a Graduate Assistant for the Admissions and Recruiting Team. I would like to answer all your questions regarding Tippie or the admissions process or anything in general. So start shooting your questions !
P.S : The admissions team is not involved in this process. Be rest assured that the questions posted here will not affect your application or chances of getting an admit.
Hi ImaTippieMBA,
Hi pjgmat,
Congratulations on the application fee waiver. As for the TOEFL waiver, I would encourage you to request for it. There is no harm in trying.
All the best!
Hi, ImaTippieMBA
Had a few queries
Just over a years work experience with a leading IT firm (Yes, sounds very less but the time I get around to my applications it will/should be around 2-3 years)
- Completed my B.Tech (Electronics and Communication Engineering) from an NIT with a CGPA of 5.96/10. (One aspect I am really worried about)
- Now my extra-ciriccular activities have been great and more importantly diverse throughout my school and college years.
So here are a few questions I have for you all and I really hope you can help me out because these questions have been bothering me for quite some time.
1) First of all, my work experience. There are probably thousands of applicants like me with the same job profile, so I plan to stick to my current job for a year and a half before joining a NGO for a few months, depending on whether I get a good GMAT score ofcourse. Will that help in any way to "stand out" of the crowd? If not, then what will?
2) My undergrad percentage. It's on the lower side, yes and it has already affected me to quite an extent. But how much will it affect me when it comes to applying?
Hi debanjan,
Good to hear about your interest in Tippie.
Before commenting on your job profile, I would like to know which IT firm are you working for and what are the details of your role. And is there a reason that would justify the switch to an NGO. If its a matter of distinguishing yourself in the crowd, I would highly recommend against it as this would be apparent to admissions committee.
Your undergrad grades can be compensated by your experience. If you can demonstrate steep learning curve and leadership as come of the many qualities of your experience.
Hope this helps.

Hi @ImaTippieMBA
I would like to know whether Tippie would be a good choice for me.
My stats are as below:
GMAT:690
Work exp: 3 yrs in Energy/Power sector in Contracts & procurement with a Power sector major
Btech in Electrical Engg from NITW
I would like my career to advance along the Operations field.
Is Tippie a good place for me to apply, or is Tippie good for Finance/consulting etc?
I intend to apply for tippie MBA in 2013.My profile is as follows:
GMAT - 730/5.5/IR-8
TOEFL- yet to give
Work Ex - 4 years (by the time I join Tippie in 2014)
Industry - Thermal Power Sector (Designation - Asst. Manager in NTPC Limited)
Nature of Job - Purely Technical ( Control and Instrumentation Engineer)
Academics - Excellent (Gold Medalist in B.Tech degree)
Extra Curricular and Community Service - OK
What are my chances of getting a full tuition fee waiver?
I have also a few questions.......
If I get a 100% scholarship and GA, what additional amount will I have to pay for my tuition fees and living expenses during the entire duration of MBA program? Is such a scenario possible where a student is able to cover the entire tuition and living expenses by means of 100% scholarship + GA? Can a student end up spending nothing throughout the course of the entire MBA and rather save a decent amount through internships?
Also, is the GA available to all students irrespective of the scholarship?
Sorry for posting too many doubts.Your information will help me a lot.
Please do help me...
Thnx in advance
Having said that, the experience prior to MBA and internship play a significant roles in deciding the full time job offer that one receives.
Let me know if you have further questions.

2. Post scholarship and GA, the living expenses can vary a lot depending on the area where you choose to live and if you cook at home vs. eat out everyday. I would suggest a budget of about $500 in addition to your GA ( considering career fairs expenses that can increase the budget for a couple of months ).
Internship can help a lot in the second year and you might end up not spending through the second year. In addition, getting a 50% TA will also help this cause.
3. GA is not available to all.
Let me know if you have more questions.
1)What is the amount of GA generally offered to students?Does it vary from student to student?
2) What exactly is meant by 50% TA? Is it in addition to a GA?
3)Don't you think my total non-management background will hurt my placement chances since there will be many international students with prior experience in finance, marketing, operations, etc.
4)Which concentration should I opt for in Tippie considering both my non-management background and also maximisation of my chances of getting good internships and job? I have heard it is difficult for international students without a pre-MBA finance experience to get job offers from finance companies.
So, should I go for Operations Academy? Is it the same as the Strategic Innovation Academy (which includes POE)? How is the placement for international students in this academy?
5)What is the approximate amount of expenses (excluding living and fooding expenses) per year that is not included in the 100% fee waiver? Is it to the tune of around $2000 - $3000? The detailed fees break-up is not given in the website. So,kindly help me out regarding this.
I am from a very humble background and hence I need to know in minute detail about every expenditures involved so that i can plan my finances in advance. I am already planning to take a big risk my leaving my well paid govt. job for an international MBA. Moreover, financial position of my family is not that great. Hence I am very worried about even the most minute expenses involved.Hope you can understand. That is the sole reason I am posting too many queries.Overall, if I get a 100% scholarship and a GA and also considering my internship earnings, what additional amount in INR do you see me spending during the course of the entire MBA (my living style will be as modest as possible)?
Thanks a lot in advance.........
With some research on facebook, my inference is not many of the them are employed.
Has anyone applied to Tippie? If so, has anyone received interview invites yet?

My sincere apologies for the extremely delayed response. Apparently my email notifications stopped since the start of winter break.
2) 50% TA means approximately $1600 per month ( $20 per hour, 20 hours a week ). GA is 10 hours per week which is equivalent of 25% TA.
3)Career changers ALWAYS have to work harder to get a job.
4) The concentration that you choose here will depend on your interests. Job prospects in both SI and Finance are great. That should not be the sole determinant of your academy.
5) As I have said before, I needed $500 in addition to my GA salary. But I have known others who were fine with just the GA and are now doing well with TA.
Again, sorry for the delay. I hope my response is not too late.
