I have an admit from Sauder and McGill ( with little scholarship). I havent heard anything from Schulich yet. Just want to enquire, if admitted into Schulich, which school should i enroll?. I plan to specialize in Finance. Can anyone please share any ideas on these schools.
Thanks
Hi Jeeka,
I recently spoke to an Alumni about the career services and he said it's a grey area where the school needs to improve. You've already spoken about the career center earlier, but how has been your experience or the overall impression of the Career center?
Also, they are a lot of companies mentioned on the website who came to campus to recruit, but so far, what companies you can recall have come and recruited? Do students get placed on their own through networking and stuff or does the career center really assists students in getting placed?
I understand networking is very important but you do need some assistance from the career center..
Thanks,
Mihir
Hi Mihir,
With regards to career services, different students have expressed differing opinions in my batch as well as in the previous batches. I tend to evaluate schools from three different perspectives - academics, career services, and alumni. From my personal experience, I would consider career services to be a relative weakness when compared to the academics and the alumni. This could also be because the academics and support from alumni definitely exceeded my expectations.
One thing that needs to be understood is that the MBA program is different from other technical degrees that a lot of people have in their background. The difference is with the MBA you decide where you want your post-MBA career to go. With the other more technical degrees, the post-graduation career options are more well-defined.
If you do not have a good idea on what you want your post-MBA career to look like, the career center cannot help you as efficiently. My recommendation is to analyze your goals and come up with career choices and approach the career center for assistance regarding evaluating those career choices and coming up with steps to accomplish the same.
As a personal example, my post-MBA career choices were management consulting and product management. I received good support and recommendations from the career center in these areas. Support includes resume reviews, connections/leads with alumni and industry, and exposure to events through information sessions, etc. One area where I would have hoped for better support is more job postings specific to Sauder MBAs. In my case, I was competing with MBAs all over the country for these roles and not just my classmates. That definitely takes more effort and reduces your chances when compared to competing with just your classmates.
This is where networking using contacts in the industry and establishing relationships comes in. Networking enables you eliminate the lower level filtering and gets you face time with the decision makers. How you use the face time ultimately determines whether you are successful in getting an offer or not.
Cheers.

Looks like I did not elaborate on a couple of other queries:
If you look at the annual report, it has a categorization of how many students were placed through the career center and how many found jobs through self marketing: I believe this is about 50-50.
Annual Report | Sauder School of Business at UBC, Vancouver, Canada
There are a whole host of companies that come in for info sessions, some that I can recall are: Deloitte, KPMG, Amazon, EA, etc. Of course, I recall only the ones that I was interested in and attended, I am sure there are many others that I saw the notification for but did not attend since it was not a company that I was targeting.
Cheers.
Hi Jeeka,
Thanks for the insight. Sharing your experience really helps ppl like me.
There's one query whihc I have and that is regarding the the importance of GMAT score during the recruiting process. Is it a major factor when companies recruit or is it just one of the things that companies tend to consider but not with so much emphasis?
Regards,
Mihir

Mihir,
The only place where I have seen GMAT scores matter is when you are applying to roles in Management/Strategy consulting. It is used more as a filtration mechanism. A score of over 700 gets you on par with the other applicants, and then the comparison goes to other criteria. A score below 700 puts you at a disadvantage and you have to compensate for it in other areas such as experience, leadership, community involvement, etc.
I have also heard that some roles in finance look at GMAT scores, but cannot verify since I have not researched that area.
For all other roles, a high GMAT score can be a "nice to have" but it is your other qualifications that would probably be the swing the decision one way or another.
Cheers.
Has anybody received a reply for the 2nd round?
I had an interview on Feb 16th and am still waiting.:banghead::banghead::banghead:(applied on Jan 25th)
The interviewer(Arthur) said that conservatively speaking I would get a reply within three weeks.
Would appreciate it if anyone who has shares information.
Thank you!
Hello Everyone,
Im happy to share that i recieved an Admission offer from sauder.
I will be accpeting the offer and hope to see you all there. I live in Vancouver (But am an international student) so I know quite a bit about the area and stuff. Please let me know if I can help you in any way. I also know quite a bit about the VISA process, so I can help there as well.
For what its worth heres how long the process took, some advice and my profile.
Gmat :- 650/6/ Work experience - 5+ yrs
From what ive been reading on the forums, you need to keep in mind that the GMAT is just part of the application. I was advised very early on that Sauder takes all the admissions criteria into consideration. I have read of 670 and 680's being rejected, and the admissions team also let us know that they have rejected people with >700. You have to present an allround package. Really prepare for you interview and dont worry if your slightly lower in one area. You have to show a level of integrity in your interview. These are trained professionals with years and years of experience and know and recognise when your blowing smoke. Be honest about your answer and do NOT be afraid to say that you do not have the answer to a question but are looking to explore this in the future.
My undergrad aceds were not to my satisfaction, but I worked hard at the GMAT made sure to score the average, also did some make up courses and essentially proved to the admin team that Sauder was where I wanted to be.
I submitted my app on 8th Feb
Got an interview call on Feb 14
Interviewed on Feb 28th
Accepted - March 7th
Please keep in mind that I had all my documents in order (certificates, marksheets were submitted at the interview) and also from what ive heared that the decision times take a little longer for overseas applicants.
If youve been waiting for a while, you can email the admissions team and ask for an update.
If you were not aware, on march 3rd, Sauder had an MBA experience day, and I would highly recommend (if you have not already) to take a little time to view the video that was posted (http://bit.ly/mbaexp2012) . The conference really highlighted the atitude and culture of the MBA team and left me with clear understanding of the support that we would have .
Again conrgrats to those who have made it through already, excited to meet you guys and for those in the process, hang in there and let me know if you have any questions
hey hi

I was just wondering if you could help me with the visa process. The program starts in September, 2012 and I have received the final admission letters. When should I apply for the student visa and how do I show the sources of funds? Am not sure on what is acceptable..fixed deposits or complete liquid cash is to be shown? if yes then how much? is it a year's tution fee+living expenses?
thanks

Hi there,
From my understanding you can apply as soon as you get the acceptance letter from the school. You want to give yourself enough time in case for some reason the Visa is rejected and you have to apply again.
regarding showing financial resources it does not mater if its a bank balance or if its fixed deposits.
If your having family give you money, I would suggest to do that now rather than close to your visa interview, so that it does not look like it was deposited just to bulk up the amount.
As for how much is required, here's a good link
"http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-how-documents.asp"
My suggestion would be to show over and above what is required, if you dont have enough, you can get people you know to give you an "affidavit of support".
Also if you have contacts in Canada, who are able to provide such a letter, that helps.
Just in case you are wondering...
On March 9th, I wrote to the adcom and asked when I would get a result.
They said that I would get it by the end of this week.
Hope all of you who applied to Sauder get a positive result this week.
By the way, is there any here who is waiting?
It seems that unlike the 2011 thread, this thread is very quiet. Does anybody know why?

You know Ive been thinking about that, and I think that last year a lot of people had to wait a really long time for results. Im only guessing that probably their processes and procedures were not quite in place last year. This year the Admin team may have sorted out a lot of the issues from last year and candidates are getting responses a lot quicker that last year.

Reason: Program Cost + Internship Opportunity + Quality of Life
I have lived in Seattle for an year and west coast suits me well. Further, for me, Vancouver BC is a better place to live my student life than London ON. Also, if I would have opted for Ivey then it would not have been possible for me to bring my spouse considering the hefty total expenses associated with Ivey.
Last but not the least, UBC MBA appeals to me as a high quality futuristic program having lot of potential. I feel that it is currently under-rated by rankings.
I hope it answers your query
Cheers!!

Totally agree with you, I've sneezed and wheezed through the first 25 yrs of my life, and have now lived in Langely/BC/west coast for the past 5 yrs and it was like an instant cure. The rain takes a little getting used to though.
Hello Guys,
Just got a ding from Sauder saying "Waitlisted". I am wondering is there any1 else with same fate as mine and by when will we be able to join our future classmates ( wishful thinking :P)

I am sorry to hear that. I am also waiting for a reply. I am afraid that I may have the same fate. By the way, could you please share your profile? and When did you apply and when did you have your interview?
It's very exhausting to wait. Hope you will finally be accepted.
