I am member of the Class of 2009 at the University of Wisconsin. I am in the Applied Securities Analysis Program, which prepares students for careers in Investment Management.

The ASAP program is a CFA Program Partner. Students complete both an MBA and CFA in tandem. During the second year of the ASAP Program, students manage a $40m portfolio of equities and bonds. The ASAP Program is focused on students interested in investment managment. Placement opportunities include both buy-side and sell-side research, but primarily buy-side. It boasts many prominent alumni, including Bill Nygren of Oakmark Funds, Paul Leff of Perry Capital, and Phill Gross of Adage Capital. Best of all, these people come back to Wisconsin as guest lecutures to help teach the first-year class "ASAP 101" and listen to stock pitches from second year students. In January 2007, the ASAP Program was featured in Smart Money Magazine, see attachment for the article.

The Wisconsin School of Business has a GMAT average of 660. The ASAP specialization within the MBA Program has a typical range between 690-700. Don't let your GMAT hold you back from applying. If accepted or waitlisted, it is possible you would be asked to retake the GMAT. The scores are very important to all schools from a rankings perspective.

Best Regards & Good Luck!

Thanks for the initiative to help out future applicants. I was very much interested in UW Madison in the beginning, mainly because I had worked in Wisconsin for more than two years and thought I could get resident status for fees purpose 😃 but internationals are not considered resident for fees. Though it's another matter that while paying tax I was considered a resident. :-)

Anyway, the school is pretty good. After some research, my preference changed to general management from corporate finance, otherwise I would have definitely applied to UWM.

I am sure the in-state issue is very frusterating for you. However, I would remind you and everyone else that University of Wisconsin has the lowest out-of-state / international tuition that I have come across. Total tuition for one school year is still below $30,000. I don't know any other US MBA program with a tuition less than $30,000 and only a few under $35,000. In addition to the tuition rate, Madison is an affordable place to live, so living expenses will be lower.

Cost of school should never be the top factor, as you have identified you are more interested in a general management MBA. With its 13 specializations, Wisconsin's MBA Program really targets those who have specific career goals before starting the MBA. The specialized route allows you take more focused classes.

Also, everyone interested in Wisconsin School of Business should read the following article: The Wisconsin Naming Partnership. We just received $85 million from a group of alumni. This money will go a long way toward improving an already great MBA program.

Best.

same as above !

Hi ,

I have 640 in GMAT and 4 years of work ex(one year international). I am looking at HR in UWM. Can you please rate my chances or put me in touch with someone who is pursuing HR there ?

Thanks
Niki

Niki,

I would say you have a pretty solid chance. 640 is only 20 points below the average GMAT. Maybe you rank ahead of other students in years of work experience, undergrad gpa, community service, or work experience related to the field of HR. The name of the game is if you fall slightly behind in one area make sure you highlight an area that you excel in. In addition, I would make sure you reach out the center director for HR at UWM. The center directors for each particular specialization are pretty influential in the acceptance process. They may be able to vouch for you in a situation where GMAT is a concern.

Best,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Also looking to get in touch with alumni from the same specialization to set a realistic expectation for myself about the Uni...

If anyone is heading to Wisconsin-Madison during fall 2008 who would like to connect with me, that would be great too...

Hi,

I wish to join the Applied Security Analysis Program.

I have some queries:
1) What is the total fees for 2 years.
2) How much is the average earnings in the summer internship programme?
3) Is GMAT necessary for this particular course? There is no mention of this on the website.

Thanks.

Hey Chris,

I m planning to apply to Wisconsin for year Aug 2011

Had certain queries.

1. My profile is CA + LLB with 5 yrs of work exp (3yrs internship + 2 yrs post). I want to know what are my chances with a score of around 640.

2. When do we need to choose a specialization. I am contemplating between ASAP and Corp Finance and Investment.

Thanks in advance
