I created a thread for Owen long back but no one replied to it. Must be lost by now :)

Anyway, let us see who else is applying at Owen. I will be applying in R2.

I am in the process of researching now. Not yet convinced about the college apart from good schols and comparatively low fees and expeceses.
Here is the info i have gathered so far :
---------------------------------------------------------
Total Tuition + Exp (approx) - 105K USD
No of students Selected/Applied - 382/986
Rank in US - 30 (tier 1)
GMAT range/median - 580-730/660
Number of students getting schols in first year - 78%
Avg salary after placement - 90K
% of class placed in consulting - 17%
% of class placed in finance - 35%
---------------------------------------------------------
Anyone else has other views ? Anything unique.
sunilchanchlani , aki_rocks22 let me know why you are applying here.

The reasons are the same:
Low cost (fees and living both)
Tier 1 school
Good faculty (feedback from an alum from Owen)
Chances of financial aid from school.

Can you share the contact information of the alum. Would like to get more information about Owen. I have pm-ed you. Will share the info in forum as well.

Well, I am sorry as I can't share the contact of the alum. He is a friend of mine from my undergrad college and as I know him, he will not appreciate it.

However, you can PM me your questions and I can ask him about it.

You can try to write the bloggers at OwenBloggers | Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management. This is a blogging site maintained by students at Owen. I wrote to one or two of them but haven't received any response yet.

BTW.... i opened your blog (read the heading of the first post) and just wanted to tell you that OWEN requires TOEFL.

Hi Sunil,

Few questions from my side:
1] Hows the job scenario for international students?
2] How good is Owen known in consulting domain?
3] For H1B problem, What efforts are college taking?
4] Hows the alumni network in consulting domain?
5] Has recession effected scholarship chances?

Cheers,
Akshay

Akshay, I had asked most of these these question to him before and here are the answers:

1) Not good. Actually bad. Primarily due to the location of the school. The last batch is yet to achieve 100% placement. When I talked to him the placement was around 60-65%. This can be considered to be normal in current economy but the fact is, Owen class size is very very small. So it should have been higher.

Around 25% desis have come back to India. The number of desis is small at Owen due to small class size.

2) Good. Regionally. Not so well known at the international level.

3) Nothing much because the H1 issues is something that only the government can control. The school is trying to contact the alumni for this though. The school is actually trying to place as many people as possible but it is natural for it to give first preference to locals (i mean north americans)

4) Same as that for (2). Though some of the Owen alumni are in big companies.

(Thanks for this question. I asked him about this just a few mins back)

5) Yes. The university endowment fund is down by more than 25%. But, obviously this has not stopped scholarships for deserving students. The school still gives scholarships.

BTW.... i opened your blog (read the heading of the first post) and just wanted to tell you that OWEN requires TOEFL.

Well, thanks for pointing out. It seems I will have to take the test now :)
But the overall situation in the US looks quite grim.

Hi Sunil,

Thanks for answering the questions,

I have few more questions after seeing these answers
1] As the funds have been reduced, should we conclude that scholarships offered this year would be less as compared to previous year? I know that deserving students will obviously get schols, I just wanted to know whether the chances of getting schols have reduced or they are still the same?

2] This question is very generic and is related to all those desis who return back to India. Not sure whether this is a right place to ask this question, but if a person returns back to India, how can he repay the loan? as salaries here would be no were close to the salaries in US. The reason why I am asking this question is MBA in US calls for a huge investment, so I feel there has to be a backup plan if things do not go well.

Cheers,
Akshay

May be we can put it in this way:

1) Two possibilities:
a) Reduced number of scholarships. So instead of someone getting it at 730, someone with 740 or 750 will get it. (just an example)
b) Same number of scholarships. But reduced amount. Instead of full ride, half-ride or something like that.

2) I am assuming people who came back had backup plans and are now using those plans. No more information is actually available about these people except that they have come back to start their jobs or business in India. Those who have come back are not unemployed.
Moreover, repaying the MBA loan has usually a tenor of 30 years. So may be they are using this tenor.

Just my opinion.

Hi Sunil,

Thanks for posting your opinions, if possible can you ask these question to your alum friend. I would like to know the alums opinion as well?

Cheers,
Akshay
