Finding this thread really helpful as am very keen on taking up finance in MBA. I have just finished my engineering. Have shortlisted few colleges( other than IIM's) for this: TA Pai MDI Gurgoan FMS Great lakes, chennai
Pls let me know your view on these and would be very thankful if someone can suggest other good colleges I can apply to.
Thanks in advance
FMS is really a good one. You might also want to consider NMIMS, JBIMS & S P Jain.
If you want to opt for MBA-Fin then the best institute in India is IIM-C. Other institutes, those can be considered good for Finance, are IIM-L, FMS, NMIMS, JBIMS & S P Jain. But its better you focus on first three. Not to mention that IIM-A, IIM-B are also damn good
By the way, what criteria you used for shortlisting universities? Was it CAT score, your interest, the faculty at respective university or combination of these things? I'd suggest to find out those institutes that have considerably good faculty for the subjects that you are interested in.

with all due respect to TA PAI and Great Lakes , they are not in the same the league of the other colleges mentioned
Thirdly , there is no such college very good only for finance , if you take admission in a good college you have plenty of chances in the all the fields '
I really dont think people who have tertiary information about colleges can give good and accurate information , they can only give info which they wud have heard , read etc , if you want to make a career decision on that be my guest
PS: My advice do your own research , if you want to be a manager start acting like one

Hello Everyone, Thanks to the person who initiated this thread, it is so useful for people seeking advise in this specialization. I have gone through all posts in this thread and got some idea about MBA in finance and it is so vast like a ocean. I have few doubts and I highly appreciate if some experts or seniors shed some information on it.
I'm planning to pursue MBA in finance and would like to know about the entry level positions that graduates aim in Investment banking and Corporate finance.
And also would like to know after gaining sufficient experience in either of those i.e IB and C Finance. Which are bigger positions that people aim for apart from CFO :)

Hi vidhu484,
Entry level position in IB, in India, is Associate, I think. What I've read is that the concept of Analyst isn't there in India. Bulge Brackets hire tier 1 B School graduates as Associate (speaking of front office roles.) After climbing up the ladder of experience roles range from MD, VP, CEO (like Anshu Jain, Vikram Pandit). It takes 3-4 years to become MD once you start as Associate.
For IB I do recommend this website. You'll find tremendous information about the field. Also, do visit this thread. This one is very insightful thread.
As I don't have any idea about CF, I won't comment on it.

you can start your career with basic level in financial management. It's also depends on your knowledge, understanding concepts and passion to work.
Do we really do specialization in finance in this financial meltdown? Or we need to develop an ability and innovation to take finance as a specialization ?

Why Repo rate is considered a smarter instrument than CRR
Though i am not sure if am right but according to me Repo Rate is a smarter instrument because repo rate helps banks to earn interest. Rbi sells securities to Banks with the repurchase(repo) agreement that it will buy back the securities at a later stage. They sell it at discount and buy it a face value so this difference is the interest earned by the banks. On the other hand CRR is the amount that remains idle with the RBI and it does not earn any interest to banks. i am not clear with the concepts, people correct me if am wrong.
