GD-PI Date: 4th March
XAT - 91.2,
10th - 83.86,
12th - 73.67,
BMS - 67.25,
Work Ex - 24 months (Finance),
Batch: 8:30 am, YMCA Mumbai.
Had a disastrous start to the process...I reached 10 minutes late
The first panel (Prof. Raghuvir Vernekar & Prof. Amarendu Nandy) I went to wasn't ready to let me sit for the GD-PI, luckily my name wasn't in their sheet
(I guess this was the panel "chulbulee" was in)
The second panel let me in without a fuss, though the gal who entered 5 minutes after me wasn't allowed and was told to come for the 1.30 slot.
GD topic: A person should not be too honest- "Straight trees are cut first".
20 seconds for an opening statement. Discussion of 10 minutes & another 20 seconds per person to summarise (Summary to be given in the reverse order of the Opening statement)
7 participants in the GD, including me. A very "polite" GD. No cutting each other. Not much content though. Overall, I would say below average to average because the Panel cut us short after 10 minutes saying "We're going on to an altogether different tangent!"
After the GD, we were asked to sit in a Board Room. As luck would have it, I was the last one to be interviewed!
Interviews were going on for anything from 10 to 30 minutes. My turn came after nearly 2 hours!
Personal Interview:
Me: Good Morning, Sirs (It was still 11.00 AM)
P1 (Prof.Vithal S. Sukhathankar) gave me a cool nod & P2 (Prof.Chandersen Mirchandani) returned a chirpy "Good Morning."
P2: So, Rohan, what took you so long to come for the PI?
Me: :shocked:Sir, I came as soon as the previous interviewee asked me to come, though I did visit the washroom before coming here. Sir (I said pointing to P1) was with me too!
P1: I was there but I wasn't with you
(Laughs all around)
P2 to me: So, Rohan, is washroom the correct term?
Me: Ummm..Yes sir, why not?
P2: No, it's just that there are so many terms around..washroom, toilet, restroom, loo etc.
I somehow managed to mumble an answer.
P2: So, Rohan, tell us something about your work experience with XXXXXXXXX (my first employer)
Me: Gyaan..
P2: Oh, so you used to advise customers on how to lose their money?
Me: You can say that, Sir! (Smiles all around)
P2: So what was your USP? (Cash market or Futures?)
Me: Gyaan.
P2: Tell me something about your work with YYYYYY (current employer)
Me: Way too much gyaan :cheerio:
P2: So, YYYYYY is a very good company..Why do you want to throw it all away? Stay there for a couple of years and then you can get a good jump.
Me: Again gyaan why I want to do an MBA and my entrepreneurial amibitions.
P2: Ohh..So you have thought about being an entrepreneur?
Me: Yes sir, I have thought about it, though not in the immediate future. Atleast 10 years before I decide to venture into it.
P2 to Me: Good..You keep on thinking about it then!
Sir? (P2 to P1)
P1: Tell me something about BMS.
Me: Gave a load of gyaan.
P1: So why do you want to do an MBA if your basics are clear?
Me:
For reaffirming my basics and for advanced learning, of course!
P1: Ok, so tell me some of the subjects you have studied in BMS.
Me: Counted around 12 subjects.
P1: So you like Accounts, Finance etc.
Me (confidently): Yes, Sir
P1: Asked me a couple of questions on loans and their effects on a balance sheet, and took me for a complete ride in one of them :sneaky:
P1: So why does a balance sheet always match?
Me: Told,
P1 in the mood for jokes: Not necessary..My salary is my asset and my liability is my wife, who is always much higher than my salary (Big smiles all around)
P2: Any other calls, Rohan?
Me: None thru XAT. KJ Somaiya & Nirma thru CAT.
P2: Which one would be you prefer among these two and GIM & why?
Me: Duhhh..Obviously GIM (Had to say that
)..Goa is a scenic place and learning would be a very enjoyable experience and some more gyaan
P2: So is there anything that you want to ask us?
Me: Yes sirrr..A few things! I mean no offence, but why are engineers preferred in most of the B-Schools in the country?
P2: Gave an honest answer about the entrances in India being skewed in favour of engineers and them being better at Quant & Reasoning skills.
P1 chose a much more conventional way by pointing out my OA and saying "Engineers have far better figures on the marksheet" I felt like
Me: What is the difference between General Management & other specialisations?
P1: Told
P2: MBA today has become more about specialisations than Management as a whole, which shouldn't be the case.
Me: Completely agree, Sir ;)
P2: Good. Then we're done. Thank you, Rohan and Best of luck!
Me: Thank You, Sirs and Have a Good Day! :D
Just 1 tip, Puys: Just don't let that smile go from your face. There might be moments in the interview when you feel you are being stressed or intimidated. Just accept it with a smile plastered on your face. Everything else will fall in place.
Verdict: May or may not be a convert, but I've already converted SCMHRD. Having options doesn't hurt though!
Best of luck to everyone!
