[2012] Ask ISB Hyderabad/Mohali: Admissions Director AM Kannan answers admission-related questions

Dear Sir,According to the student e-profile of 2013, 3% of the class is from the healthcare industry. But the actual number of students from healthcare is 12 instead of 23. Can you please explain? Also, the number of students from healthcare seems decreasing from 2012 class to 2013 class. Your comments on this please? Thanks in advance
12 is the number of medical doctors - rest of the 3% are from pharma, biotech sectors. Apologies on the late reply to your initial query. Please don't read too much into the patterns of students in each class; while we welcome all professions, medical doctors and healthcare included, to apply for our program fact of the matter is that we cannot (and do not want to) compel any profession to apply πŸ˜ƒ ! The strongest MBA candidate is one who knows why and when they need an MBA. In addition, selection is made solely on the basis of overall strength of a candidate as we cannot lower selection standards regardless of diversity of any candidate.
There have been numerous success stories during and post ISB from the healthcare profession. If you feel you would like more information on how an ISB MBA could fit into your professional and personal plans, please give us a call and our counsellors can provide you some insights.

@ISB.Admissions Dear Mr.Kannan, How often do you find students who have done their MBA, applying for PGP course at ISB? Do you have any such cases in the recent batches?
This is not unusual and we have several candidates each class who have done another MBA previously. It is not held against the candidate in any way, unless of course you have an MBA from a top 5 global B-school πŸ˜ƒ You should however answer the question 'why another MBA' explicitly in a couple of lines when you compose your essays. We are looking for your thought process and clarity in why you feel you need to do ISB's program. We understand that sometimes candidates may have done their MBA too early or not joined a program that provided the learning & mindset transformation that is necessary for achieving your professional & personal aspirations.

hello sir,
Thanks for your reply sir.

when a candidate with 90+ 10th and 12th score, decent extra curriculars, 700+ gmat score, 8cgpa (B.E) applies for ylp, will the 8 cgpa considered as a low score as people from other backgrounds might have better scores in their under graduation.

There are no cutoffs for academics or GMAT. Academics & GMAT help us gauge whether you can handle the academic workload of our program. From what you have noted, it seems that you have adequate strengths on the academic side. We never consider solely on the basis of GPA and/or GMAT. So, please do not neglect the rest of the application - video essay, resume, essays and your interview as these help us understand your leadership attributes, self awareness, clarity of purpose, energy & passion for what you care about etc.

@ISB.Admissions Sir, provided that our background and extra curricular are good (about 80+ throughout with national and international curricular alongwith work ex of little less than 2 years) but the GMAT is of a 590 as of now, is there full consideration of the application or is it true that only 700+ stand a chance of appearing for interview and the processes further on?
Each completed application is given full consideration. Our process is designed to look at your strengths and not to identify areas you are weak in. So while your application is given complete consideration we will seek to understand how you are outstanding in other ways even with a low GMAT score. It is in the applicant's interest to convey to us through the essays, extra curriculars, interview, etc that they are aware of their strengths and that they have the passion to pursue their goals.
Hi...
Thank you admissions team for your valuable time in answering our queries.
I would be really grateful if you can throw some light on my eligibility chances for ISB admissions.

Work Ex: 22 months as on today
Role: Business Consultant in IT products and services company in Hyderabad
Qualification: B.tech

I haven't given GMAT yet which I would have to..

Can I be eligible to apply for PGP even if i have just 2 years or couple of months more; and what are my chances of converting if I have a decent GMAT score with the quoted work ex

Thank you in advance!!

Cheers!

@ISB.Admissions if we have applied to round 2 and that too on the last date, since I haven't received any intimation at all regarding the status of my application while most have already received their interview calls, should I consider my chances bleak and prepare for the next cycle re-giving GMAT with a better score?
All mails have been sent. If you haven't received a status update, please call us. In case you would like to reapply please discuss with our counsellors as GMAT is NOT the only factor in our process - your application as a whole needs to come across strongly.

Workex is calculated unil 31 March of the year in which you would like to start the program. So it sounds like your workex meets our eligibility criteria. It is impossible to discuss chances of being selected until a complete application is filed. Please call our admissions counsellors to discuss what it takes to make a strong application - we look at the quality of your takeaways from your work & life experiences, your clarity of purpose etc to make our decision rather than on the basis of number of years or the specific score you obtained in the GMAT.

Dear Mr. Kannan,

First of all thank you for taking this initiative and directly replying to aspirants' queries.

I would like to know that by what date can the waitlisted guys expect an email regarding their application status. The earlier email mentioned third week of March which is too open ended.

If I go by the last year's thread, we can expect mails starting March 6th upto March 20th. Does this hold true for this year as well?

Thanks in Advance.

Waitlist candidates can expect to receive mails starting later this week. You can assume that these mails shall follow the general timeline you have mentioned. All the best!

Hi.

I have a fairly simple question. Its based on my profile. I have graduated fairly recently and I have been working at an education company which produces K-12 learning material.

Now, my academic record is very average, 79 in 10th, 65 in 12th and 63 at graduation.

I know ISB does not explicitly state that an average academic record does not immediately disqualify a candidate, but not doubt, it does not help his/her chances.

I want to know the kind of work or the kind of experience ISB would like for them to consider someone like me.

Thanks.
Our selection philosophy is based on the principle that people succeed because of their strengths. We are perfectly comfortable in the fact that we all have to improve on certain weakensses - which is only human πŸ˜ƒ
Having said that, it is upto the candidate to reflect on their strengths and identify specific instances in their professional and life experiences where they have demonstrated these strengths. We value all work experiences and are interested in understanding your takeways from your wkex rather than the industry or position you were in.
I recommend you call our counselling team to discuss your questions and get a few pointers on how you can create a strong application. If you are a driven candidate and really know how to leverage an MBA, chances are that this will show through in your application as self awareness and clarity of purpose - which are a couple of key leadership attributes.

Hi,

I completed my MBBS and am interested in doing MBA.
My queries are quite extensive and request you to please bear with me

First, will my internship year and my temporary job experience of close to 10 months be considered under work experience.

Secondly will 3 yrs of doing Pg (MD) in a teaching hospital or doing a 3 yr residency in a corporate hospital be considered as workex??

And Finally, if PG is considered under workex will I need to show a proof of income, noting the fact that over half of PGs and most of residency programs don't give any form of salary but on the contrary take collect fees

Thank you
Raj

Dear Mr. Kannan,

Some of the folks waitlisted for Co'14 batch were given admits on March 6, 2012 mainly for the Hyderabad campus. Post that day, no reported admits or rejections have been noticed on Pagalguy.

On behalf of all the waitlisted guys on Pagalguy ISB forum, I request you to clarify the below written query:

Last day for depositing confirmation fee was on 2nd March; accordingly some admits were rolled out on 6th March. Are there any pending results that ISB plans to roll out soon? Whether yes\no, when can the rest of the waitlisted fellows expect to hear from ISB (acceptance or rejection) ?

Yes, internship and resident-ship experience will be considered work experience. For proof of income, you can drop us an email to clarify your situation.

Very few offers may still be rolled out depending on acceptances for valid outstanding offers - I am sure you will appreciate that it is not possible to predict this to any degree of accuracy πŸ˜ƒ . We appreciate the efforts all applicants took to prepare their applications and due to this we receive a lot of strong candidates; but we are forced to select only what our class size permits.
Please feel free to call our admissions office in case you have more questions.

Hi Sir,

If an applicant has worked in more than 2 companies (lets say 3 in his 4 years of work ex), by any chance would that be a negative factor for his chances of getting an admit?

No, we understand that each candidate has their own reasons as to why this might happen. In most cases employees, applicants included, do not control their work situations beyond a very limited degree. We are looking at you as an MBA candidate and at your strengths. Our process is not geared for evaluating you as a prospective employee.

Hi team,

I am quite an amateur in ISB /GMAT forum. Though I have gone through the entire process on the isb's website, theres one thing which has not been explained explicitly and thats the second mba receptiveness @ isb. Please throw some light on this, how this is percieved at isb and what is the trend in terms of number of students coming for second mba in isb

Unless you have an MBA from a b-school comparable to ISB's program, you are welcome to apply. We have several successful candidates each year who may have done an MBA too early or not done it from a program that suited their learning objectives. You should make it a point to tell us why another MBA in a few lines.
