***Roles in Supply Chain & Operations***
Typically companies during placements don't recruit for any specific branch of Supply Chain, they recruit for the overall function and then you are allocated to a division as per project requirement.
The designation offered by most of the FMCGs (HUL,P&G,Mondelez,Nestle etc) is 'Management Trainee', while other firms, including manufacturing firms, like RIL,Whirlpool, Cisco etc offer the role of 'Supply Chain Manager' or 'Operations Manager'. Other than these, Consulting firms offer role in Functional Consulting. E-Commerce firms offer varieties of roles like SCM, Product Manager, Account Manager, Category Manager, Customer Relationship Manager, Analytics based roles etc, few of them don't even require SCM/Ops knowledge. (like Account or CR Manager)
Now once you go into the company you can work in any of the following branches of supply chain, also these are the career lines in which one generally moves ahead.
>> Procurement/Purchasing - Responsible for buying/approving acquisition of goods and services, including raw material and machinery, needed by the company. Few key responsibilities here are getting goods at best price, cutting wastes, managing supplier relations, contract management etc.
>> Plant/Facility Manager- Mostly people from core engineering branches are preferred for this role. Here you oversee everything, from production planning to determination of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
>> Logistics/Distribution- It mostly involves planning and monitoring the quality, quantity, cost and efficiency of the movement and storage of goods.
>> Warehouse Management- Involves optimizing warehouse operations and controlling inventory.
>> Retail - Few companies like Madura Fashion Limited, Bharti Retail etc hire for this function, here you work with the retail team and the work can range from planning the design of a retail shop to managing distribution for a retail chain. Other than these typical Supply Chain oriented roles there are many strategic roles too, like:
>> New Product Development
>> Route-To-Market Strategy
>> Demand Planning etc
