Ask a Consultant! - GMAT/GRE Only

I am primarily looking at top twenty bchools in the world (ft rankings) so mainly US and Europe. In terms of MBA majors, i am a sales and marketing person, i have grown in my four years of work ex in this function and would like to continue to grow in the same... hence i dont need a school which is good when u need to change industry.. but what i do need is a school which can give a good package increment.
A college with good placements for marketing profile is always welcomed. :D

augustevileyes,

Going back to your original post, you have an interesting profile with the startup and the blog - and I am sure you will have great stories to write about. Also, you would have quite some explaining to do with regards to your low GPA. The great GMAT score will help you there and you can use it as a showcase of your real potential. Holding managerial positions will further strengthen the theory that you have straigtened up since those forgetful days.
Now with regards to the specifics: when you are looking at the top 20 programs in the world, they would all have a great marketing specialization/ electives section. Its more a matter of your fit with them - for instance, do you want to do a one year MBA at INSEAD or IMD or a two year program at LBS or in US at Duke Fuqua? Do you want a big/small class size, case method/lecture based/ highly interactive method of studying? which are the kind of companies you want to work with and which b-schools do they recruit at? Which b-schools will be lenient with your undergrad scores? Once you have figured these basics out, your list of 20 will itself be down to 8-10 and the search thereafter can be more specific to your fit/ career goals.

I have a Gmat score 710 with 2years 3 months work experience in my own agribusiness as on date.I am associated with human rights commission and various NGOs such as red cross,AOL and yuva.I am also the trustee of a trust, which woks for the upliftment of farmers. What are my chancs of getting into top Bschools.Where can I apply?

I want to apply to DUKE, Chicago Booth,Emory,Harvard (he he ).Do I have any chance of getting into these schools.Do i need to give GMAT again, because I am an Indian candidate.

arjunsharma,

Do you have chances at any of the b-schools you have mentioned - other than factors like GMAT, it depends on your the quality of your work experience, undergrad scores, extra curricular/ volunteer work (which you seem to have in good amount).
If you are doing great work with your agri-business, have good stories to talk about and can get effective recommendations, then you are in a good position to apply. If not, then a better score on GMAT will not help either. In this case, you could defer applying by 1-2 years and build up your work experience, get a better GMAT and then apply.

Hello,

I have been a silent member of this forum which has been a great help for me in my prep.
...

Thanks for going through my post,

Nikhil

Nikhil,

GMAT is not the biggest qualification factor for candidates with 10+ years of work experience, so you should sail along well without retaking it...infact you are close to/ higher than the average GMAT of most of the programs you have mentioned here.
Your work experience consisting of managerial positions and leadership responsibilities will take centrestage in your application - and it is this part of your profile that you must project really well.

godhelpmba Says
do you imply that i cant apply to any good college in this whole world even if i get a good score in gmat or IELTS..

Absolutely not, sirji. There are folks who've got into Harvard with a GMAT 550. But I'm sure they have something stellar about their other components that help them get in.

You have the same choices. Go for the good schools and show them something that'll make them ignore the weaknesses. Rock solid work-ex was only one of the examples.

well i totally agree with this , as i have done things like that i was a head of a sponsorship committee, team leader in the college..while i was pursuing engg i was offered jobs in marketting and all.. i know i am good at it...
Now we are talkin'!

what do i need to do .. should i also start preparing for gmat or it isnt worth coz my track record is not that good...what exaxctly i shuld do , if i know i want to go for MBA..no second thought
In your position, I'd go ahead with the GMAT, as it's a low risk and (relatively) low cost investment. Plus you'd need it anyway when you start applying.

Right now, all the discussions are hypothetical. So build up the story brick by brick and see where it's heading.

A few final points sir. Realise the pros and cons of the perspectives you get from others on discussion forums. Nobody (least of all strangers, including consultants, who've got only a few sentences to form an image) can judge your potential better than you.

If you feel strongly that you'll do well in an MBA program, work on whatever is in your control and send across a few well-planned applications when you think you are ready.

The bigger idea (even if it isn't directly apparent) of the whole initiative here is to get more desi junta into the top schools and celebrate their success. So do come back here to share the good news.

Dear Sameer,
Request you to kindly evaluate my profile.

Extra Curricular: Numerous awards at school and college level in quizzing, public speaking, writing, presentations as well as sports.Had the oppurtunity of being the chief editor of the college literary mag, in-charge of the official cultural as well as technical society.Actively engaged in 2 path breaking social awareness schemes but unfortunately have no documented evidence of the same.

GPA: 9.076/10(dunno how that measures out of 5)

GMAT:680 (A poor one, I guess)

I have the following schools in mind :
Spain: IE, IESE, ESADE
UK: Judge, Said, Warwick, Cranfield, Manchester, Cass
SE Asia:NUS,NTU,HKUST

Please suggest for any changes that can be incorporated in my school selection...

Logistics related experience can give you tons of things to talk about that your competitors from IT will never be able to match.

Most schools will allow you to specify your original grade without conversion.

Not necessarily. Higher is always better, but contrary to general perception 680 is not such a bad score...and I have special reasons to think that way :-).

13 schools is too high for my comfort. If you can do a fantastic job with the applications, you don't need to stretch yourself beyond 7 selectively chosen schools for Round 1 and 2 deadlines.

Dear Sir,
This is my first post.
To cut to the chase, I want a little advice on the schools I can opt for.
My profile:
Graduation-B.E-ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS ENGG.
GPA-3.3/4.0
GMAT ATTEMPT 1-700/5.0 (QA-49 VA-35) ATTEMPT 2-710/4.5(QA-49 VA-3
WORK EX-5.2 YRS in product marketing & sales/sales promotion/business development for power products. Worked in Crompton greaves, ABB & Legrand India with good appraisals.
Extra carriculars-Won prizes in quiz, debate, role-play,singing etc. in national level symposiums.
Presented a paper on 'brand equity' in national level symposium.
Want to pursue full-time MBA in marketing-esp. Brand management/market research.
Have sent scores to the following schools:
ISB
KELLOG
CARNEGIE MELLON-TEPPER
NTU
NUS
Plz suggest if these schools are within my horizon or I need to do a reality check considering my average GMAT scores.

Could any of the consultants please review my profile and comment on my college selection?

IT Male 730 (Q50, V38, AWA5.5)
NIT Allahabad, Mech (71%)
Six year of work-ex with high performance, employee of month/quarter awards
More than 2 years of international exp
EC - participated in and organised quizzes, part of book club at organisation level and also was a part of team which used to publish a monthly magazine in the organisation.
Post-MBA: to enter in business consultancy (ambitious goal) or to continue in IT as business analyst or product manager (secondary goal, but one for apps) and ultimately CTO.

Not so good part - besides IIM, not gread acads (XII - 68.9, X-77.5), work ex in same company and same account and perhaps EC's are not up there.

So far, I've short listed -
Ross
Emory
Kelley
Cambridge,
Oxford,
INSEAD and
NUS

Is there any other college in US/UK/Asia known for bent towards tech consultancy that I should look at?

Thanks.

YSOSERIOUS,
You are decently placed with regards to your GMAT score - It will be a better strategy to put in all your efforts in writing stellar applications rather than gaining marginal increases on your GMAT score.

Infact you may be better placed with the 700 GMAT score, as it also has a higher Verbal and AWA score. Kellogg may be a stretch as its known for marketing and competition is tough. There are some other b-schools that you could research in the US : Cornell (known for brand management), NYU Stern, Haas Berkeley and Duke Fuqua.

Jarinwallah,

You have a great profile - more than decent GMAT, good pedigree (NIT Allahabad), strong academic credentials (70+% on graduating) and a fairly solid work ex of 6+ years. I didn't understand the IIM bit. Have you also done an MBA from one of the IIMs?

Even without the IIM stint, with your solid background a compelling application can be crafted with either of the goals - 1) using MBA as a platform to change tracks and move into a mix of business and technology consulting- addressing the strategic issues such as the BTO (business technology office) offering of McKinsey. Other strategy firms have similar equivalents. 2) using MBA as a platform to target a CIO/ CTO role in a Fortune 500. This definitely requires a good understanding of the business side as technology is after all an enabler to meet the firm's business objectives.

With your credentials, I would not ignore the schools traditionally strong in consulting such as Booth, Wharton, LBS and Columbia. These schools attract all the top tier strategy firms (McK, Booz, Bain, BCG) as well as the top tier tech consulting firms such as Accenture, Cap Gemini, CSC and IBM plus the big four which also have a tech consulting offering.

Shipra, you have a great profile (including acads and work experience) and an excellent GMAT score. Your career description shows career progress, which is what all b-schools are looking for in their candidates.
You should target the top 10-15 programs (American and European). Most of these will prepare you well for a career in consulting. If you are interested in joining any particular companies after MBA, you can base your b-school research on the campuses these companies visit for intenships and recruitments.

Also please let me know other things can i mention in my profile considering the application pool from IT background is huge.

Your guess is correct about this one- Indian applicant pool is a numerically strong pool, and therfore competition is tough.
A strong application is one which represents different aspects of your personality in a balanced way. This will differ with every candidate as everyone has a different lives and experiences. It will be hard for me to comment any further with the limited information given here, but it seems that you have interesting experiences about the startup and the extra curricular activities.

My Question is about the document that should be uploaded by the recommender. My Previous supervisor asked me: "Whether this document should be in a Question-answer format" OR "whether the document is a letter of recommendation in which these questions are answered".

Please reply at the earliest as the deadline is approaching ...

akiitian10, Stanford has asked 4 specific questions in the recommendation documen

In general, we ask you about four different things:
- One, what's the context of your relationship with the applicant that you're recommending?
- Two, how has he/she performed versus his/her peers?
- The third question is, tell us about a time you've given constructive feedback to the candidate. That helps us see how the candidate has grown over time.
- Finally, we ask an open-ended question to give the recommender a chance to comment on anything else we should know about the candidate's performance, potential or personal qualities.

Each of these four things is critical to us in making a final application decision. So, if you just wrote a short note you might not have answered all four of these questions.

They should be answered separately as questions and answers. Your recommender can give targeted answers for every question and supplement them with apt examples.

btw, this information is there on the website.

I am interested in doing MBA in Operations Management. I have the following queries;
1. Where do I stand, given my profile and GMAT score?
2. I am targeting Kelley(Indiana), Fisher(Ohio State), Georgia Tech, Univ of Wisconsin-Madison and Krannert(Purdue). What are my chances of getting admit to these schools? Also, what are my chances of getting a scholarship there?
3. If according to you I am not eligible for the above mentioned schools, then which other schools should I apply to for Operations Management? Is it worth doing my MBA from the 30-50th ranked schools?
4. Do I really need to go through a consultant for the application process? Is it really that difficult? I see many people using their services, hence the question.

Thank you.

Hey, I would really appreciate if you could evaluate my profile.

I am currently in my final year studying BBA in Kolkata, India and I'm expected to secure a distinction.

I've scored 720 in the GMAT

Work Experience:

I have not spent a single summer after the age of 14 free.

I spent two summers working at the back office of a 4 star hotel working in the marketing department.

After that I work for 1 year part time at a leading stock brokerage in the high net worth division.

During and following which I started my own company with 2 friends and engaged in construction, and have completed 2 transactions and in the middle of a township project.

Last year I started another company with 2 other acquaintances in America starting a company which handles foreigners investment into real estate and construction sector in India. So far we have secured 11 clients and are handling a sum of 4 Million USD within a year of incorporation.

I have founded my own NGO 5 months ago that built an extra class room in an existing village school, where we added computers and books.

And have set up a team of volunteers including myself who teach children computers and spoken english along with other soft skills.
We have also distributed clothing, umbrellas and blankets to over 500 people.

I am aware that I lack "full time" work experience, however the depth of experience I have had is great.

The reason for me to hurry for my MBA is:

As you can see my company is taking off, and so it's now or never really, as there is not much scope for me to be able to take any time off in the future. Also, I am the only heir to a vast array of companies with interest in Education,Salt,Hospitality and Stock broking, and my father's health is not at its best and is failing. So I must take over as soon as possible.

My target school in CMU - Tepper

Please do let me know your assessment.

Thank you

Hi,

I would really appreciate if you could evaluate my profile.

M...

Thank you.

Shreyasm,

You fall within the 20-80% range of GMAT/GPA for the b-schools you have mentioned here. So, if you write good applications, you should have a chance at these b-schools.

Regarding your profile, you have worked in operations/ logistics so far and want to continue doing so - shows a perfect fit for the programs that you are applying to. However, you should ensure that you have a clear and logical career progression story in the essays which also spells out why and how you will need an MBA education in operations and you can not get this learning on floor, through your job.

Regarding admissions consultants, thanks for asking on the admissions consultant thread! Let me try to give you an unbiased opinion- work with one only if your feel the need to (no peer pressure here). Its not a pre-requisite to gaining admission. Having said that, consultants can make you see your application hollistically (essays, resumes, recommendations) rather than every individual essay. This can make a big difference to what you write in there and how well you present yourself to the admissions committe.
