Well, the best place that I have visited will have to be the North - Eastern states, 6-7 years back. My uncle, being in the Air force, was posted near Tinsukia in Assam at the time. So we made his residence the home base, and explored the entire north-east of India. Best of all, it was the end of May, and the monsoons had already reached Assam...
It was amazing. Just a short drive away were beautiful tea gardens, and many many wooded areas. We also visited a tea factory, and saw first hand how tea was made from the leaves. Also, there was a dense jungle commencing from the edge of the AF base, and leopards were often spotted on the base itself! We often went for " Panther Rounds" at night, hoping to see a leopard in the wild!
We also went to the Kaziranga National Park, where the elephant we were riding was charged by a rhino!! It was the stuff high-school essays are made of. Kaziranga alone was an experience of a lifetime, but apart from that, we went to a place called Tezu in the Arunachal, which was to be reached by crossing the Brahmaputra in a ferry, jeep and all. Brahmaputra has to be seen to be believed. It is vast - at some places you cannot see the other bank - and fast. The amount of effort the boatmen put in is mind-boggling. At one place two dozen boatmen lined up on the bank, and pulled our boat along the banks with a rope, against the flow of the river, to take us into calmer waters.
We were also fortunate enough to visit Cherrapunji and Shillong. Cherrapunji lived up to its reputation. It was raining cats, dogs and horses when we reached there, and the visibility wasn't more than 2 metres due to the fog. But it cleared out amazingly fast too.
Oh, I forgot about Parshuram Kund in AP from where you can see into China!
Throughout the trip, the one thing that stood out was the armed forces, and how they strive to bring normalcy to the troubled areas. They do everything, from building roads and bridges, to ensuring that communications are maintained with the rest of the country.
I also think that The Seven Sisters are the most pristine and uncommercialised areas of the country, and arguably the most beautiful. Truly a taste of Incredible India.

I think you are mistaken dude.... Dharamshala and nanital are 100 of miles apart... they are not even in same state...
Well went to mussorie on a weekend trip... was a bit dissapointing....I expected to see the natural fall in kempty... but they have turned it into a kind of amusement park.... everything is artificial there(apart from the fall itself)

SINGAPORE rocks.....:) Instead of merely visiting tourist spots, I had the chance to get insights into how Singaporeans live and was amazed to see that they lead a very superior quality of life, ideal for a human being.
Impressive ! I could relate to what you were saying as I have just come back from the Darjeeling/Gangtok area and it was truly remarkable. I was also able to visit the Indo China border at Nathula Pass apart from mountaineering in Western Sikkim as a part of my advanced course being conducted by HMI-Darjeeling. We were caught in this season's heaviest snowfall and I had multiple shoe bites from the 10 kg Snow boots I was wearing but it was a trip I would always cherish. Hopefully, I would be able to go back to the NE many more times and explore it further.
For the picture lovers, I have uploaded some of the pics on my photos site : http://photos.yahoo.com/elfindelhi. For the relevant shots you could look at the albums with "AMC"/"HMI"/"Sikkkim" in the album name(s)
Vipin_Singh Says@Ritu - I know for sure that Leh has a fully functional airport(also for Military reasons) for which Jet as well as AI operate regular flights. Leh is much more than a hill station and if you don't mind the really high altitude it is the place to go to
best place visited is kashmir valley undoubtedly.. been to manli, mussorie nd stuff.. but these places r too crowded to enjoy.. but kashmir is simply awesome..
another thing abt kashmir.. that is wat localites say..
Kashmir=Cash+ amir.. means only rich ppl can go there.. frankly i agreer.. its on the costlier side.. btu definitely worth it.. i still remember that flowin water .. at an amazin speed.. clear like a crystal.. gulmarg snow.. pehelgam horse riding... beautiful stuff.. definitely heaven in india.. can't say abt world....
i think by far the most beautiful plzce i eva visited is the infy training centre in mysore.
Hey All,
Did not find any other thread suitable for this post. Although this is an old thread, I think its the proper one for my purpose.
I have been away since Friday evening. The past 4 days were very hectic but enjoyable. I had 3 long distance train rides and one flight. Visited three cities and attended a wedding. Spent only the sleeping hours in the hotel rooms. Remaining hours were spent exploring. My first trip to North India and here's the verdict:
1. Its COLD!!!
2. The sarso ke khet spreading for miles together make for picture perfect scenery. Exactly as I had seen in movies ala DDLJ.
3. Taj Mahal is simply divine. Tip: Visit it at around 5 in evening and stay till 7 to get both daytime and moon light view of the Taj.
4. Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort not to be missed. (Hotel Taj Plaza, good hotel to stay. 500 metres from the Taj and only Rs. 1000 a night for a double room)
5. Delhi has lots and lots of places to explore. So many places of historical importance besides India Gate and North Block, South Block etc.
6. New Delhi is well planned and built. Certainly very fitting as India's capital. Do ride the metro. Its world class. My fellow travellers vouched that its comparable to the ones in Singapore, London and the US.
7. Indian railways rock!!!! No hassles while booking. No delays. Good service on trains. Theres also online booking.
8. GPRS is simply amazing. Its very fast. I even replied to an email from the train. When I didnt have the route for one of the ride. Voila... GPRS connected me to the Indian railway site and I got the route.
Have to catch up on so many posts in the past 4 days.
Thanks,
Abhishek.
