Department of Management Studies - IIT Madras
If you find some discrepancy, as stated by some in previous posts, wait for some time more as the dept has been inundated with applications.
Now that the last date for turning in the applications is over, I am sure that all of you must be eagerly waiting for the shortlist to appear. While our faculty mulls over the applications, and because we believe this thread needs a little dose of life, let me give you reasons why you should be considering an MBA from IIT Madras as a serious career decision:
1.A chance to be an alumnus of one of the biggest and most credible brands in graduate and post-graduate education in India, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and opportunity to tap the network of IIT alumni spread all over the world through the Alumni cell.
2.Fabulous placements that keep reaching newer and higher milestones each year. Last year the avg package was Rs 7.8 lakhs and this year it's risen to 8.5 lakhs. This year we have had companies such as Lehman Brothers, Fidelity, MarketRx, Irevna, Aranca, Firstsource, IBM, KPMG, Wipro, Infosys, MarketRx, Caterpillar, Schlumberger, Henkel , MarketRx, Hewlett Packard, Genpact, Avalon Consulting, and Deloitte Consulting. Last year we had foreign placements from Bloomberg and Indigo Futures. This year one of our seniors has made it to Barclays Bank, London. So the future is very promising and rosy. 3. A unique quarter system. Instead of 4 semesters, we have 8 quarters spread over 2 years, each quarter being around 2-2.5 months long. This affords DoMS to offer more subjects, greater variety with electives and specialized courses. For more info, go to DoMS IIT Madras.
4.A learned and experienced faculty. DoMS IIT Madras by design has Ph.D.s as professors, with degrees from IIMs and other reputed universities of India and elsewhere in the world. They also bring in the benefit of corporate experience, their network and with various consulting assignments have an idea about the changes in corporate scenario. This helps them update the courses and introduce contemporary topics and subjects. Have a look at our faculty at DoMS IIT Madras.
5.The advantage of audit courses. The IITs have a unique advantage over other similar programs in other institutes. IITs have other students from B.Tech, M.Tech, etc. courses. So at any given time the other engineering depts together offer about 300 courses in every facet of engineering. 6. Be a part of bodies that work towards interacting with the corporate and bringing them for talks, lectures, etc. We have forums such as CEO Connect, Corporate Wisdom, MIST (Management Insights for Social Transformation). These are totally student driven initiatives that help the students learn about the practical and operational aspect of the management theories that we learn the class. 7.Absolutely great infrastructure. We have a computer lab that is open 24 hours, comfortable class infrastructure and access to the best management and technical journals through our Central Library.
8. Clubs that take the learning to the next level. We students are part of clubs that discuss the latest developments, tools and techniques and discuss case studies. So you would find the Consulting Club, the Finance club - Finomena, The Marketing Club, etc. In addition, we run many other initiatives such as the Newsdesk that updates the students about recent and important news, since it is difficult to keep a track of news as an MBA student and a GD committee as communication aspects are assessed strongly in final placements and summers.
9. A chance to interact with people from other courses here. After you become a student, you get opportunities to interact with the other junta from courses such as B.Tech, M.Tech, M.A., M.S. (Research Scholars). You get umpteen chances to do that: we have many festivals like DoMS IITM's management fest, Samanvay; IITM's cultural festival Saarang and tech festival, Shaashtra, the annual inter-IIT sports meet, inter-hostel sports and cultural competitions, etc.
10. Study close to pristine offerings of Mother Nature. Within a campus of around 240 hectares, 80% of which has a green cover, we have diverse plants, butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. For instance you can see Chitals, Blackbucks, Deers, etc. roaming around the campus freely.
11. Develop yourself in all aspects. With immense resources at its hand, IITM offers its students a swimming pool of Olympic standards, a well-equipped gymnasium, the impressive IIT-Chemplast cricket ground, a vast stadium and a hi-tech wood-floored multipurpose indoor stadium in the Students' Activities' Center. IITM also holds lectures from behemoths from all fields and walks of life in the form of Extra-Mural lectures. Under its auspices, this year we have had the opportunity to listen and learn from speakers like T N Seshan and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and one of the astronauts who accompanied Sunita Williams in her space mission. Previously we have had speakers like Narain Karthikeyan.
12. This year IIT Madras is celebrating 50 years of glorious existence. To commemorate that in addition to its celebrations, we are also hosting this year's Pan-IIT meet at the year end. And management students have been invited to be a part of various committees here. Imagine the exposure you will get as a part of such committees as well as when corporate biggies and successful IIT alumni from across the globe land here.

So you might receive a call on the basis of your work ex and statement of purpose. The last rank to convert in the 2009 batch was in early 1500s and that in the 2008 batch was in 2200. So we are expecting ranks to only go higher in the new incoming batch.
But ranks would surely not be the one single criteria of selection.

The average for laterals is around 9.7 LPA. Anyways, I would advice you all to concentrate on the preparation as these details are better suited once you convert the calls.

The calls can be expected around this weekend or probably by earl next week. Last year around 600 calls were given, around 450 attended the calls

Ranks mentioned are final converts. Unfortunately we cannot give out the range of ranks for GT/PI calls as department considers it privileged information.

Give a call at the department office and tell them your problem ASAP. The people receiving the calls are very helpful and i m sure they will look into it. The number is 044 22574550.
