That was a very informative post..thx...but have another query...of the total number of students selected by IITM can u give me a rough figure of the number of students with Non IT Work ex or Education...
Is there a particular form/format for the SOP that needs to be submitted along with the application form?
Thx Rj
Hi Rj, Good Question. 😃 Academic Background wise: Computer Science/IT:22% Electronics & Telecom: 38% Electrical: 10% Mechanical/Production: 12% Chemical: 4% Others: 14% Workex-wise: Non-IT Work ex (Company-wise): 35 % After having interacted with out classmates for a considerable time, I can say that even though a lot of people were with IT Companies, their profiles were Non-technical or IT-Neutral e.g.: Technical Writing, PR etc. So if I may extend your question as per my convenience. The Non-IT Work-ex (Profile-wise) works out to around 44% Addressing the larger question, we have people who have worked with companies in different backgrounds:
IT Project Management and Allied Profiles
Shipping
Broking
Oil & Gas (Petrochemicals)
Army
Teaching
NGO
Manufacturing
Operations Mechanical Works etc
Family Business
So we have the requisite variety. SOP No Specific format.. But some minimum content expected. I had written about SOP in one of the earlier Posts (Post No: #54). Please refer to it. Do let us know in case of any more queries. Thanks, Mayuresh
one last question:- What weightage is given to the written rank in the overall selection module If we take total as 100.. Please ,can someone assist?
Hi All, Few thoughts: The Faculty who conducts interviews have huge Industry and Teaching Experience. (My Interview was taken by Head of Operations-North America of One of the top three Indian IT Companies and a Professor who has taught in some of the most reputed Institutes in India, US, Singapore etc.) In other words, these people have seen students/aspirants for over 20 years. These guys can see through us. They know what they want and are try to find the same in a candidate during the interview. Once you are inside an Interview Room, its you and you alone you can make or break it. As of now, try not to think about weightages for rank, SOP, extracurrics etc. This is something we cant find out for you guys. So, no point worrying about it. One thing I can promise (.if there is a predefined criteria) It would be 'Sane and Sensible.' On questions like XYZ is my rank Should I Apply? We have experienced this phase of the MBA application process too. So we do know what you might feel like. A little apprehensive, a little tense, in two minds. We understand. Our sincere advice is that, If finances are not a major trouble, YES!!.DO APPLY. It is easy to accept that one applied and got rejected. But, it hurts when you dont apply and someone with a lower rank gets a Call. Once the Calls are out we plan to have dedicated threads for GT\PI. Take your call...... All the Best. Thanks, Mayuresh

Based on the last years score, you have a very good chance of getting a call as the cut offs last year was 1500+ but again, it depends on your rank, SOP and no of applicants.

thanks in advance..
@deb2008 Very strong acads. You do stand a chance of a call, but not very sure about that. However, as written by us earlier it will also depend on the no of applicants and your essay. Do have a strong and convincing essay. All the best.

@r4rakesh Good amount of work experience. You may get a call, cannot say for sure. While applying do give special attention to your essay and try to stress upon the work ex as that may differentiate you from others. All the best.
sorry to bother u but i have no idea about the essay u said..is it a part done along with gd/pi ??
thanks in advance
@deb2008 Look at post no #166. rmbt has given the link to the application form. The form has all the instructions including the ones for an essay. You need to write an essay about why you want to pursue an MBA. Also you can add some data and examples with supporting evidence that will help your cause. All the best.
Hi seniors.. need some help.. im clueless as to which schools i need apply with a realistic chance of making it...
Work Ex: 4 Months Internship on foreign vessel 9 Months as Junior Engineer Officer on foreign vessel
16 Months work experience in Brand consulting. A few awards, scholarship, merit certificates in school, college and work place.
@sandeepr You have extremely good acads throughout, engg from a very good inst, good extra curriculars and a good amount of work ex too. Good rank too. You should be receiving a call. However, do concentrate on the essay as it can multiply your chances of getting in. All the best.
The main points of differences between gd n gt - 1. in gt the grp has to accomplish a task. 2. coming up with a conclusion or a plan is important.(depending on the topic) 3. just discussion will not work if it is not heading towards something constructive for the entire group. 4. thus synergy as a group becomes important.
hav heard tat unlike other iits iit madras has group task instead of gd...... wat is the difference btw the two.....seniors pls help
thanx in advance
Group task is different from a GD in the sense that you are not expected to put your views on a a current hot topic or something of that sort. Instead you will be given a role for example they would ask you to assume that u r an IAS officer or police officer etc. The task could be anything like planning a marriage in your family or setting up an industry or an SEZ etc or reducing crime etc. What is expected of you is to work as a team towards the goal. So here it is not necessary for you to shout your voice out 4-5 times to be heard. Whats important is to come up with good ideas and suggestions, and give the group a direction. Your team playing skills and your creativity as a future manager are being analyzed here.
Dont worry about it too much. We would discuss GT/PI in a lot more detail as soon as the calls are out.
is it possible for somebody to post the data regarding the ranking of the management schools... management schools in IIT's... basis maybe the intake... last rank upto which a GD/PI call was given... and also some data abt the total number of seats...

@herbie No comparison of b schools recommended on PG. I can answer for DoMS IITM, where last year the top rank to get in was AIR 120 while the last one was in the range of 1500s. Officially the total no of seats here is 60.

@1001insane With a rank of 14619 it might be difficult to get a call from DoMS IITM. You may apply but the chances are very slim. While applying, however, you can give attention to your essay as a strong essay might make it for you. All the best.
