Equity Markets

Market was down somewhat today..
important news for today is Rupee in a new five year high vis-a-vis dollar at 43.26....
i m thinking what would its impact in equity markets???
do major exporters would suffer anything due to it??
how is market poised to go with these shares??
Please put on your views...

This rising rupee has its adv and disadv.

Rising rupee means a reduction in margins for exporting companies ( software, textiles companies)
The import companies( oil , gas ) will see better margins with higher valuations of the rupee .
Q: "Why do some IPOs list at such premium"... not some ..most IPOs list at premium...you have to know why the comanies choose the IPO route.. TO raise money... when they dont require external funding.. dont want to take loans.. they raise money from the markets.
With the cureent (mostly) bullish trend in the indian markets every comany knows thattheir IPOs would be well recieved and in all probability be oversubscribed.
That explains them listing their stocks at premium...coz they are aware that people would still be willing to have positions in teh stock...
Question ::-- Why do these stock fall and eventually trade below the IPO price...This is coz people start offloading their stake in teh stock. Now these are people who bought the stock just coz they wanted to offload their stake booking whatever profit that they can ASAP... these people know it if the comapny is not strong to hold its ground in the long run. They buy failry large volumes and sell them just as quick.
Q : HOw to steer clear of them... Before you decide to go for an IPO..research the company.. google all the details.. go to their website..read the financial numbers if available... but dont go by the number... see what is teh trend like... e.g have teh losses been reducing??? by what percentage... any expansion plans?? any tie ups.. any new markets/deals for the company.. look for all this info.. ANALYSE HARD.. and then decide if you wanna go for it...
Now what if you are not able to find any info... dont go for this IPO... it for sure is gonna land you up in losses...

Note : The term "people" mentioned above refers to both Retail and institutional investors

Thanks for the gyan , dude !!

Nice to see the way u replied answering almost every question ..

Thanks once again

Hi everyone

I wanted to understand the basis of allotment for IPOs ...

heres a link which shows the basis of allotment for Gokaldas Exports ...

http://www.capitalmarket.com/ipocentre/bashow.asp?code=12966

As a retail investor i had applied for only 75 shares and was alloted 15 shares ...what i cant understand from the table is ...the RATIO column ..how have they arrived at the mentioned ratio..is that the total no. of shares allocated divided by the total shares applied in each respective catergory ???

Please try to help..

I am not very sure about the Open interest funda... but I can share what I know of it...
THis relates to the F&Os;
by adding to the open interest it means that Instead of the excercising the "buy" optionthat a trader would have what he does is that he rolls over that contract i.e he opts for a similar position in the companies futures.
Whe companies add shares in open interest... it means that they have added more numbers in the F&O; trading that a trader can play with ....

P.S -- I am not confident about this topic so i wuld be glad if someone could explain this in detail

Hey how exactly does the allotment of shares take place?

Hi guys,

I have been trying to break into the equity markets over the past 4-5 months, but have failed in my attempt...say, just what does it take to make it as an equity analyst??? none of the better broking houses will even look at my resume (incedentally i'm a CA, albeit a fresher).
would doing an MBA get me where i want to go, or should i go for CFA (that's a 3 yr course)

Desperately in need of help....

All based on ratio proportion calculations. Company keeps stipulated % age for retails and institutional investor. based on response, ie if shares are oversubribed they set a ratio of subcribtion: allotment for diff category. and if its a huge hit lottery system is also adopted in addition to ratio

thats wat i know:)

any more inputs friends???

i think we r not allowed to short sell for more than 3-4 days or so...have to enquire indiabulls abt the same..
happy investing... n ya...market will be on green on monday...

HI.. After the PNB and Allahabad bank public offer set back ..i have stopped picking up IPOs..also big companies did not come out with any..however seeing the huge premium gokaldas and saksoft received on their listing ..i did some reasarch and i found that 2 parameters that give some indication of the future listing of a script are...

1) p/e of the company Vs the industry p/e ..if the p/e at the higher end of the price band is considerably less than the industry p/e - this is positive indicator
2) the issue oversubscription.. saksoft was 37 times..impressed on listing..
sringar cinema - 8 times..didnt impress
gokaldas..i think 47 times...impressed on listing..

so i think a low p/e as compared to industry average and a high oversubscription...are gud indicators for a not so big company...

now the problem is that i am not able to find a site that offer these data... like industry p/e , oversubscription when the IPO is running..all this gets available when the stock lists...

anybody having any links ..pls give...

1) for data regarding P/E , u can calculate it urself .
OR go to icicidirect ipo section , u will find a report about the IPO .
For comparing P/E and other financial parameters of companies in a sector try out myiris.

2) u can get the data from NSE-india , it is updated every hour during the book building time.

well friends... open interest isint all that complicated a topic...

am not a pro but have been in this area for abt 2 years....

open interest is attributed to the number of shares of a particular stock that is not yet settled...

Eg : Arvind mills has a contract size of say 2350 ( please correct me if i am wrong i forgot ) and if on a given day after having adjusted for all the positions that are squared off... we will find that there mite be a net buy figure of a 1000 contracts and so we can say that arvind mill has added open interest of 2350000 shares...

I hope that this eg. would have cleared some doubt atleast... any further querioes and i will try to solve them too..

P.S. dont like the primary markets too much though.....

Thanks rahul ,
Does that mean that when the open interest increases , more no. of ppl are intersted in buying the stock.
Can open interest be below or above the market price. How do u find out abt that.

hey guys...me trying to learn technical analysis....candle sticks etc....but m facing a problem to find sites which provide a database of stock rates n also the candlestick graph....ne technical analyst who could help me with sites proving with all charts.
note: i have been 2 monecontrol.com, but there i found only the line and bar graphs. also seen equitymaster.com, tht to has just the line graph.
ne sites other than these ??

Hey Rahul..

wat do u actually mean when u say.. contracts?! as in Arvind mills as 2350 contracts?! wats dis?! n hw come 2350 contracts * 1000 contracts at the end of days squareoff = 2350000 shares on open interest?!
