Executive MBA Related Queries

Thank you Ajay. I appreciate your kind advice.

Hi Folks,

Please help me , it's urgent!!!!

Currently I'm working in IT having 2 and half years of experience. I thought to do MBA but due to some commitments I'm not able to do it. Now I'm thinking to do EMBA from top 10 B-schools, but have few concerns. Can anyone please clear me on the below queries.

1. Is EMBA good for the professionals who are having 3yrs experience?
2. Please give me the B school names which are good for EMBA
3. Is it possible to switch from IT to Consultant jobs in same company after EMBA? If so please give me the program names to do so..
4.How about EMBA in IIT's?

Awaiting for your quick replies...

Thanks,
emaspirant

Firstly most Top B-Schools require min 5 yrs work exp..so in ur case you could apply to ISB, Great Lakes and Sp Jain...EMBA is at par with normal MBA jst tht the entire curriculam is finished in 1 yr so very hectic....You can easily switch to Consultancy but the switch would be worth if you do ur EMBA frm some premier college...so with ur work exp options are very limited fr EMBA...bt fr 2 yr MBA you can hv an edge as these r done mostly by fresh graduates...ATB

Thanks ayush!!!

For this point "You can easily switch to Consultancy but the switch would be worth if you do ur EMBA frm some premier college".

Is it worth if I do PGDBM(3 yrs) in XLRI..is this course add any weight age to my goal??

does parallel work ex count? i mean i did a 10+2+3(certification course) and got a job and after 2 years got a graduation degree, now can i say i am a graduate with 2 years of work - ex?? plz help...

@tanmoy87 Usually almost all institutes quote the requirement as "Any full time work experience after graduation". So I don't think your's will be considered.

Dear Friends,

I need to prepare for GMAT exam, kindly suggest any nice institute from where I could buy study material. On Flipkart I saw many books from Princeton Review, but I guess study material from any coaching institute will be better.

Amit

For everyone's benefit. The One Year Full Time MBA (IIM, ISB) etc is a regular MBA. Not an executive mba which is a part time course. There is nothing called a Full Time Executive MBA. Full Time MBA can be One Year regular MBA (the only format offered in Europe) and 2 year regular MBA (primary format offered in USA)

Candidates please read below for clarity-

Request thread starter to rename thread. Moderators please also look in.
@onetwokaone I think, the thread is named Executive MBA because in IIM's and most of the top institutes, the course is called PGPX - Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives, and its a full time 1 yr course. :mg: Basically just to give the idea to people searching here (Keyword search!) in PG that this is for Executives or people with significant work exp.

Agreed that "Executive MBA" is part-time and of 3 years duration. But then searching becomes easier. Moreover I guess discussions here are pertaining to both 1yr and 3yr programs! :mg:

@ajaygovindg

Calling the one year mba an executive mba is a huge disservice to the OY MBA. Its like calling an Audi a Bajaj scooter. I dont care much for serch engine optomization as much as establishing programmes correctly. Half the juta in India has poor understanding of the one year course and repeating 'executive mba' executive programme makes situation worse. Its only in india that a flagship one year MBA course as followed in europe at INSEAD, OXford, Cambridge is called an executive mba. Yes IIMs have doe some splendidly crappy naming - but ISB hasnt which calls it the PGP. Why don't you focus on that?

The fact that "discussions here are pertaining to both the one year full time (a reguler mba) and 3 year part time courses" is exactly the problem.

again - Its a one year full time MBA. Yes its for people with experience as an MBA is supposed to be by its definition but no, its not a executive MBA.

@moderators - please correct the thread name. Reflects very poorly on Pagalguy.
@1year I never said that I belive in or advocate the fact that 1yr course is called Executive MBA! :mg:

What I meant was that aspirants misunderstand the "Executive MBA" for the 1yr programmes also, based on that naming by IIMs etc. This thread is meant for the 3yr part time programmes only, which is the actual Executive MBA, but then off late I saw queries on the 1yr programmes (referred to as e-MBA, Executive MBA etc.) also. Hence my logical conclusion on why people are confused! :mg:

@visionIIM-ACL, @grondmaster - I think this thread needs to be renamed as Executive MBA (Part-time) Related Queries to avoid further confusion and to focus the discussions in this thread. For the 1yr full time programmes I think there are separate threads for IIM A, B, C, XL GMP etc.

I understand your concern but since the name of the course is being used interchangeably by different institutes, this thread serves the purpose for all the colleges irrespective of specifc names being used by them.

And hence, the name 😃 Please feel free to PM me for any concerns 😃

Cheers!

Dear Vision,

Please share schools which use name executive mba for the one year programme. As far as I know - ISB - PGP, IIMA - PGP for executives not executive mba. XLRI - GMP, SP JAIN - PGPM, Great Lakes - PGPM.

If you want to encourage the confusion for reasons you might have, please go ahead. BUt pagalguy's own career counselor is going hoarse telling people on threads that the one year mba isnt an executive mba.

here is ISB's faq too -

2) Is the PGP similar to the Executive MBA programmes offered by several business schools?
No. As mentioned above, the Post Graduate Programme is similar in rigor and content to a regular two-year full-time MBA programme offered by global business schools.

@visionIIM-ACL Its just bad english which has led to this confusion.

read your ABC's here - http://www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2012/10/04/executive-mba-in-india/

An MBA for candidates with experience is not= to Executive MBA. Let this be your first lesson in inequalities too.
Utter confusion:

What if I want to get my MBA degree in 1 year? What are the programmes that are available? What all colleges should I consider? What is the minimum experience that I need to have? What all exams should I give?

X-83.8%
XII-84%
B.tech.-60.7% in electrical engineering
1 year experience in a steel major
Decent extra-curriculars

What exactly is executive MBA?Will I be able to work while studying? If yes,how tough would it be if I'm working at a place which is quite far off from the college(in a different state)
Are there 1 year full-time courses available too?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of these courses?
How would I benefit by doing these courses taking package into consideration?
Which option would be better,a two year full-time MBA or a 1 year full-time MBA?

Kindly,explain everything in detail.
Thanks in advance
@1year

Please answer my query!

@iimcatcrazy ISB, IIMs, XLRI, FMS, SPJAIN etc. are some of the top institutes which offer 1yr MBA programmes. Usually the eligibility criteria for most of them are GMAT score and minimum 3-5 years work exp.

You can check relevant threads here in PG to know more.

Use PG search and you can find relevant threads for other institutes like SPJAIN, IIM-K etc. also.

Executive MBA is different (although as the discussion above your post shows, in India even 1yr programmes are called MBA for Executives!). Executive MBA or e-MBA is usually part-time for 3 years duration. The classes usually happen in evening or weekends and so you can work while you study. If the work place is not near there are some programmes offered by the likes of IIM A, B, C etc. as satellite courses also in some cities. Say for e.g. IIMC offers satellite programme at Bangalore. You can check the respective institute website to know where such programmes are offered.

Advantages of 1 year courses
- Most obvious one. It gets done fast in about 12-15months!
- It usually leads to Consulting kind of profiles because candidates usually have significant work exp.
- Same specializations/electives as in 2 year courses

Disadvantages
- It might not be that helpful if you want to switch career track or profile. Usually people end up in same industry or a higher position of same work profile they had before doing MBA. And mostly people go into consulting kind of profiles with their work exp to back them up.
- Fees is higher. Say at ISB course fee is around 21lakhs!
- It does not give you a deeper understanding of concepts and also the opportunity to implement it in between through internship. In a 2yr program one gets to go for a summer internship after 1st year and put to practice and try out some concepts learnt and decide specialization/electives accordingly. But AFAIK in 1yr course one has to choose specialization in the beginning itself.

@iimcatcrazy

A one year ful time mba is is a regular full time mba completed in one year. It is meant for candidates with experience (a basic entry requirement at both 2 year and 1 year mbas abroad. India is the only country where an MBA has been awarded for many years to canddiates with zero experience. Abroad such a course is not called an MBA, but a masters in management (not equivalent to MBA). IIM A's One year mba is ranked no.11 globally by financial times london. IIM A two year mba does not qualify and is ranked in a separate list for non-mba courses called masters in management.

One Year MBA is standard duration in Europe. Two year is standard duration in USA. IIm One Year mba is based on european format at Insead, Oxford, cambridge, IMD etc.

The One Year full time mba is a residential programme. Minimum experience required for the course is 5 years at IIMs. ISB requires 2 years min. Top colleges and specific names of course are IIM Indore (EPGP), IIM A (PGPX), IIM (EPGP), IIM L (IPMX), IIM C PGPEX). Non IIM institutes are ISB (PGP), IMT, IMI, SP JAIn, XLRI, Great lakes, Aegis, Soil, MDI.

An Executive Mba is a course meant for candidates who work while they pursue their mba. examples are FMS 3 year pat time, ISB PGPMAX, IIM Indore PGPMX, distance mba, online mba - any mba which is not full time (1 year or 2 year) basically.

Placements for oYFT mba at IIM are on average CTC - 20 lakhs, highest 50 lakhs
for 2 year mba at IIM - average CTC - 12 lakhs
for executive mba - no placements usually.

One year is better if you have requisite experience as you get hired as CEO, VP etc. two year is good if you are a fresher. 2 year candidates get hired as management trainees.
