Fpm 2013

@Adymos Wait for the official confirmation. I had applied last year and had an admit. I know the problems they were facing (I don't want to discuss them here). But at the same time, it was a huge advantage to the students and the program. Let's see what actually happens.
@lynch said:@bzg2hg hi lynch...good to know that u r interested in FPM...ur profile seems to be good for chosen areas...now just prepare well for entrance exam and come up with a good SOP for application purpose....
@Adymos

hi i m planning for fpm from IIM-A in Economics or finance. I am a banker with 3 yrs exp in banking in SBI and 50 months overall exp. I am B.Com and MBA. there is a two yr gap after b.com when i prepared for cat.

hopefully get a score in excess of 90%ile. wht are y prospects and wht should i expect from the interview.

@vjjani

grt to hear frm u. I will get more than 90 %ile for sure and hav written a sop for ECO area. Am i supposed to write a sop for finance as well. Also want info about how IIM A or IIM B respond to the fact that i hav applied to two areas. I m asking this coz though give that option but would surely question is applied for more than 1 area.

@lynch..

if u r applying to more than one area u have to write separate SOPs for each area...
it really does not affect ur chances if u have applied to two areas...it is always possible that ur research interest falls between two broad areas and it's always encouraged to do interdisciplinary research...

@vjjani

did u appear for an fp interview. wht was the area u applied and which iim called u. It wud be grt if u share ur interview exp. I am interested in economics. Hav studied during B.com. Also i have interest in marketing esp retailing, economics of retailing and fdi in retail. so looking forward to applying for these areas.
@lynch Hi. Welcome to PG!

This is a thread which discusses FPM at IIMs and other business schools in India. For the last 5 years, every year has a dedicated FPM thread. Just search "FPM " (Eg: FPM 2008) on pagalguy.com or google "FPM pagalguy" (Eg: FPM 2008 Pagalguy) and you will be shown that year's thread. Past threads are a very good source to get information regarding profiles, interviews etc. So, I would suggest you go through these threads. These will help you a lot.

Also, whatever you post here is automatically visible to all. If you want to talk to any particular member, you can send him/her a personal message by taking your mouse pointer over that user's name and clicking on 'message'. In case you want to post here and refer to multiple people, just start typing the username after the @ sign and select the user from the drop down. This way you can tag multiple people and won't have to post multiple times.

I am posting this here as many people who join PG for the FPM threads are new and may not know all the features. The above are rules and guidelines of PG. More information can be found here:

@sb29
thanks for ur help

Hi,
ICSE - 86 ISC - 83 B. Tech - 78 wrk ex - 26 months. (in IT)
no idea bout research subjects..not good extra-curricula..
Taking Cat preps along with work.
Please suggest what i need to do to brush up my skills for FPM. really want to get into 2013 batch in a good institute.
From where can i get an idea on the research subjects?What CAT score will be considerably good?

A general question to all concerned:

What exactly is meant by extra-curriculars? I mean, what are those things, activities that may be included into the domain called extra-curriculars?

I hope all those interested have started working on their IIM- B ... the online form is out if you did not know about it 😃

@lynch Sorry for the late reply. But to be very honest I am not the right person to answer your query I am applying for the FPM programs as well this year.
@Adymos

thats fine.

after going thru previous FPM threads i have got this info about cut-off percentiles.

1. most guys say min 80 %ile depending upon the academics, research exp, work-ek etc.

2. somebody mentioned in FPM 2010 thread, that at IIMA its difficult to get Fin/BP/Strat Mangt/POM as the cutoff %tile is in range of 98-100. I dont know whether its true or not

therefore its better if some senior guys can share there inputs again on this issue.
@Khushi_1988

Dear Khushi,

Your profile looks good. Try to get a good CAT score and you will have a fair chance for fpm.
Which area you are looking for? Which institute you are targeting at ?
Based on area we can suggest you what kind of preparation is required .

let me know if you have any specific question .

Regards,
Pradeep
@lynch...and everybody interested in FPM

don't get by that 80 percentile figure..i dont see anyone with that low percentile around...so try to maximize...

yes finance area has taken 2 persons this year after gap of 4 years..but that should not be the criteria of choosing an area..u should choose what u like..

actually all areas are tough to get in but all depends on ur interest in research and how convincingly you communicate that research in interview defines ur chances...

no problems in applying to more than one area..

u need to have basic understnding of the chosen area..u need not be a master of it but a minimum understanding is expected..

again this minimum standard may vary according to ur academic background..if u r interested in ECO and have masters or mphil in ECO, then u r expected to know eco very well, but someone who does not have eco background requires basic understanding..why he is interested in eco..is he aware that FPM requires deep understanding of a subject and is he ready to immerse himself in the subject for next 4-5 years and then whole life...

@vjjani
i appreciate what u said. its correct that such a low percentile will not guarantee a call.

I was a bit surprised about very high percentile requirements for a few areas. Also after going thru the student profiles, i know that every yr a few areas dont accept new candidates.

also its true that post graduate level exposure in a particular subject is not necessary as a prerequisite for admission.

also is it necessary that if applying to more that one area for ex SM/BP OR MARKTG , there shud be a common link like research interests, work exp etc that relates to both the areas??

@lynch...
there may be a link or may not be a link...like i have a senior who applied to both BP and PSG and got interview calls from both though BP and PSG are very different...

but to get a call from an area u have to be convincing enough to that particular area in ur SOP...then u can expect a question in interview why both area? which would u prefer and why?

It is OK to have multiple research interests as this stage..u r not sure or in other words u r equally interested in both...so go ahead and apply to multiple areas if u want to...dont worry about it...

hi...i have a few queries to ask...

1) i have a gate score of 97 ..m an engineering gradute(2011)...which stream wud be preferable for fpm admission ?
2) i am a fresher with no work experience...but have good academic record , co-curriculars , research paper in a national journal...and i am interested in doing research work..How good are my chances with no work experience?
3) kindly suggest any other details (if any )that i can add to my sop ...i
@bzg2hg
Thanks a ton for replying.
Currently in Cat mocks i'm scoring only 93 percentile. :-(
I want to target operations or public governance in the lower IIMs or any IITs for FPM.
My main concern is lack of any research wrk. Also dat i'm wrking in IT currently.
Please suggest.
