I havent given any thought to a particular subject , but the idea of FPM appeals to me , i want to be an academecian.. Should we know a good deal of the subject prior to applying ??
@amartyadey Brother actually i m not sure weather a fresher is given a due consideration for FPM. i dont even boast a very good CV , plus i dont have very good knowledge about the subjects i will be applying for...
@sayanddude SJMSOM is part of IITB and has a PhD program. Admissions take place twice a year (Jan and June). A research proposal and standardised test scores are needed. I would suggest you go through the website as such information is readily available on the website of IITB. Quality wise it is good but the stipend is not so great. Also research support such as conference travel etc. are not available readily.
@Rotlu Getting into the top 3 may be difficult (but not impossible). You stand a good chance at the others. Go through the profiles of FPM students in various institutes. You will find many B.Tech. freshers. Since you still have time and you know which area you want to explore, you can read introductory books in the area to show that you are really interested. But, my personal opinion is that you should work for a few years and then apply. If you don't know how a real organization functions, how will you teach students how to manage the organization?
@Rotlu GMAT. GRE scores are also accepted. There is a Strategy, Management and Organization group under which HRM comes. However, most of my colleagues (especially Indians) in SMO division either have a masters degree or some amount of work-ex or both.
@sb29 I agree with you. But, the Operations Management (OM) research in IITs is quite different from OM research in IIMs. OM in IITs is more OR based. But, OM research in IIMs span a variety of methodologies.
Hey Puys , will the forms for FPM in various IIMs be out after CAT ? Or the applications are out already ? Do we have to apply to each IIM individually ? Are there any extra charges for applyin for FPM ? Apart from the IIMs and XL , should we try for any other college for a PhD in HR or Behavioural Sciences ?
@tskriz Yes you are correct. I feel of late many researchers in IIT business schools are moving towards OM. But yes, it is predominantly OR based. (I have limited information about the field).
@Rotlu I will answer your last question first. You should apply not only to all IIMs but also XLRI, XIMB, MDI. You can look at IITs, not only in the IIT business schools but also the HSS departments. A lot of OBHR related research is being done by Psychology divisions in IIT HSS schools. However, I don't know whether they take people with only bachelors. Look specially at IIT KGP and VGSOM
All the other information which you have asked is readily available on the websites of various institutes and on previous posts on this thread. I understand that you must be facing tremendous academic pressure in the fourth year of engineering, but take some pains to search for information on the internet. It is your career after all.
@sb29 The " tremendous academic pressure in the engineering final year" sounded like sarcasm 😃 I will definitely check the websites.. And sir , what kind of environment is there in an FPM batch , i know its not going to be as chill as engineering , but is it too difficult ? Are all the rumours of late night classes and the pressure of not completing the thesis in time true ? Are the students busy througout the 4 years ? Like in PGDM , after the first year , work load and classes are less.. is it much different in FPM ??
@Rotlu Good. My communication skills are still intact. Get in touch with few FPM students to get a feel of what the program is like. But more importantly, Google! Googling 'Life in FPM' got me the following results
@sb29 - Hey! I already am done with my MBA (Marketing, Energy & Infrastructure) from School of Petroleum Management. I am working in an oil and gas capital equipment trading company as a Marketing Manager for the last 6 months. I will be taking CAT this year and I aspire to get into FPM/PHD from a premier institute.
Apart from the 10 IIMs which are offering courses of FPM, which other universities/colleges should I apply for? And which all exams I need to give?
My area of interest lies in Integrated Marketing & Communication.
The prime reason for my interest in this course is the love to share knowledge.
I don't want to be a professor, I want to be a teacher. :)
@tskriz Your write-up is really helpful. You can add the following information:
1. MDI also has an exec FPM.
2. Apart from lower stipend, IITs also have limited financial support for research. Most IIMs give computer reimbursement, conference grants, reimbursement of costs incurred in fieldwork etc. which are missing in IITs.
My personal opinion is IITs are better for people who want to pursue a PhD along with their work or existing management teachers without a PhD.
@BABA_Pencho I guess your queries have been answered. But I got confused by your last line which said you don't want to become a professor but want to become a teacher. What does that mean?
