This thread is for those who want to join any of the IIMs or XLRI etc for FPM prog, 2013....you can ask Any type of query related to this topic ....Thanks...
Best of Luck
@manowar Hi ! I am Currently pursuing MTech from BITS, Pilani and i am interested in going for FPM. I am also having 3.5 yrs of Work Ex with Ultratech Cement. I want to make my career in academics. Will IIM's or other top institutes consider my candidature considering the fact that i am a postgraduate in Engineering ??
@Tirthankar good profile..high probability of getting a call if u get enough score in entrance exam....all the best...be assured of ur profile...write good SOP indicating ur goals, research interest etc...and maximize score in exam.... all the best!!
@pnik u should not be worried about ur engineering background....people with diverse background get into FPM...so it should not be a hindrance for u....u need to be clear about ur research interest area and long term goals...do prepare well for entrance and be rest assured ur engineering background is not at all a problem...
at least at IIM A, I know engineeres, commerce grads, MBAs, social science, science, maths, physiotherapy, dentistry background people pursuing FPM...so no probs with background if u r clear with your career choice...
My profile - I currently reside in US, and have over 7 years of IT work experience. Currently employed at a public company in leadership role. I plan to move to India by end of this year.
Master of liberal arts in Management from Harvard University Extension School, 2011. GPA 3.86/4.0. I got into Deans list for academic achievement (top 10% of class). In the years at Harvard, I have some extra-curriculars. I have studied Strategic Management and Entrepreunership as part of my course curriculumn. Although my academics in India weren't outstanding, do you think I stand a chance? I plan to submit my application without any GMAT score.
I'm new here and have some queries. I have already applied for PGPX at IIMA and I appeared for the interview also. The result is likely on Oct 31. But now I'm contemplating applying for FPM at IIMA instead. I am professionally qualified (CFA Charter, US) and have no experience in teaching or research.
Please advise if my PGPX application this year will affect my chances,
New to this place, would appreciate help. I am planning to get into a doctoral program in the next couple of years, preferably from a reputed foreign university Current Education: B Tech(distinction) + MBA from a top tier IIT B School with excellent academics(90%) Work ex: 2 yrs in IT
X and XII - 92% and 94% Would like to focus on : Operations, Sustainable Business etc Prior research experience: None
I had some specific questions in this regard, some of them seem to have been partially addressed in this thread
1. Since I want to build my profile I was thinking of taking lecturership in a private B School(which are not very particular about recruiting only PhDs). So in the next year, I can devote some time to create some research exp as well. Is that a viable option? 2. Another option is Research Assistantship. In this context, ISB has called applications for Academic Assistants. The JD appears to be too much admin oriented than research. Is that different from RA? Are there any other instis which give RAs with reasonable salary? 3. Supposing I get into a top univ abroad(US or Europe) for PhD, would the stipends be good enough to make a living?
Why do you need to mention about your PGPX application in the SOP for FPM?
Mention about your areas of interest and other usual stuff like Why FPM/What after FPM in the SOP.
Admission Processes for PGPX, PGP, ABM, and FPM are all handled by different admission offices. So unless you explicitly mention in your SOP, different offices generally do not keep a track of this.
Regarding lack of research/teaching: that is not a barrier as such. As long as you can convince yourself and in your SOP that PhD is the program for you, lack of research/teaching would not matter.
I would suggest that you go for the AA position at ISB instead of a faculty position at a private business school. AA's also get into top tier PhD programs abroad. Just google
"isb researchers felicitated" and click on the first item from ISB's website to see details of the people who got through PhD programs abroad.
If you are single, stipend would seem great. If you are married and your spouse is not working, it is comfortable. But you may have to make some lifestyle changes.
@target_PhD No problem. I would also suggest that you apply this year as well for fall 2013. It is late but not too late. In case you get through, nothing like it. If you want help, you can PM me.
@sb29 As u said, I guess it's a bit late. Need to write tests like GRE which might steal another couple of months, by which time deadlines would be crossed. I guess there are no good schools which accept applications without them.
@target_PhD There are many deadlines which are in Jan and Feb. Anyway, when you apply is upto you. Also I think IIM C was recruiting teaching assistants sometime back. You can check if the position is still available.
@sb29 I searched the website. Couldn't find a careers section there..I think it's closed. Found out vacancies in ISB, IIM-I and IIM K..However K stipend appears to be too low :(
@sb29 Apologies ...while posting there was some link problem so it was showing that - due to error the reply could not be uploaded - hence the mutiple posts.
@fpm2013 2) ISB FPM is not recognized as equivalent to PhD. Last I heard, they were working on it. However, since it is AACSB accredited, it should be well recognized abroad. Since it is so new, it is difficult to comment on how well the program would be recognized in India. However, the quality is good.
3) Starting salaries for Asst Prof at IIM is around Rs 60k gross (Pls correct me if I am wrong). But there are perks like research start-up grant, conference fundings etc. You can also do consultancy. Starting salary for A/P at ISB is around Rs 40 lac pa. But you have to do research. I don't know the salary levels in the industry for FPM grads but I think it should be same as the starting salary for IIM PGPs.
4)I think they give waiver to only IIM grads who have graduated within the previous 5 years. I know of MBAs from good institutes repeating the first year at many IIMs. But you can always apply for the waiver and hope for the best.
I plan to apply for Fellowship in Finance and have shortlisted my areas of research, but I have not yet narrowed down on the particular topics I want to research. Do I have to specify the particular topic of interest or broader outline if fine.
