Fpm 2013

@sb29 Are fpm students treated as a part of the pgp batch for the first year?????
It is known that the subjects and classes are same for either but is everything else the same......i.e the classroom, the summer placement process, the schedule and others etc...?????
@drishtikon Nobody can predict interview calls. So hope for the best. Why don't you apply to the other IIMs as well as you have a good CAT percentile.

@cn22 I have no idea. Better ask some current FPM student!

Hi cn22....
I can comment about process at IIM A....we hav to go through first two terms with pgp...we are same as the pgp students for those two terms...we have to follow same schedule....u dont have any other courses except pgp courses....
and as per requirements of different areas, you have to attend some pgp courses in third term too along with ur compulsory fpm courses...

Hi Drishtikon,

ur profile seems to be good...but nobody can predict the chance of getting an fpm interview call...it may happen that even at 99 percentile, if ur SOP and profile details dont impress area faculty, u may not get a call...
so in ur case, i would say keep ur fingers crossed and at the sametime, i would suggest u to apply to as many colleges as u can if u r not particular about ur choice of institute....

@vjjani and @sb29 : thanks a lot sir.....i thought of applying to IIM B C and K also but they are asking for Refree Letters at the tym of application itself and I would not be able to provide them right now, so Iam applying only to IIM A and L only and keeping my fingers crosssed...

@vjjani
First of all...thanks a lot for the reply ....it does suffice ...
the reason for asking the query was that pgp is the flagship course of iims and i was just curious if the fpm students belong to that community and whether or not they are treated with the same due respect the deserve.....
thanks again!!!!

I have a query regarding MDI's FPM. Is it considered equivalent to PhD? It is mentioned in IIM's FPM page, but the same is no where mentioned in MDI website.

@invban My thoughts on this matter
1. It all boils down to what you want to do after the PhD. If you want an option to work in the industry (apart from the normal option of getting into academics) a PhD in India works better. IIMs provide good placements to even its FPM graduates in corporates. This option is not available in universities abroad where you are expected to get into academics only and you are trained to do that (no internships etc.)

2. If you want to get into academics, it also depends on where you want to work afterwards. If you plan to teach in one of the top management institutes in India, an FPM from one of the premier institutes is more than sufficient. However, if you want to teach abroad, you may not get any opportunities (because of point mentioned below). There have been instances of FPM students getting opportunities in universities abroad, but very few. Post-doc is an option.

3. Reason 2 above is because of the nature of work profile of Asst Professors in India and abroad. Foreign business schools pay their professors good amount of money. But they expect them to publish in top tier journals. Research is sometimes more important than teaching in foreign universities. However, pay at IIMs is not that great. But professors earn a lot through consultancies and executive education. So, the focus is more in teaching and practice.

4. Management research which gets published in top-tier journals is highly abstract and theoretical. Sometimes you won't even find any immediate practical application. The research being done today will find its way in textbooks after 10 years and in popular practice much later. Since the incentive structure of business schools in India is focused more on teaching, professors from Indian business schools hardly publish in top tier journals and focus their attention on knowing the latest industry practices. On the other hand, professors abroad focus most of their attention on theoretical research.

5. Because of points 3 and 4 above, the guidance in research that students in India get is very different from PhD students abroad. I am not saying one is better than the other. They just cater to different demands (Indian vs foreign universities).

6. The above situation is same in China. Chinese and Indian students make up the major chunk of applicants in most business schools abroad. An IIM/top tier MBA grad from India sometimes start their careers at salaries more than the basic salaries of IIM professors. If they do FPM for 4-5 years, the salaries that they will start at will be lesser than what they would have earned had they stayed back in the industry. Even if you don't consider the salary, the work profile will also be similar (keeping up-to-date with current industry practices). Instead, most of them want to do research which can contribute to the field in new ways. Because of this, they apply abroad and hence the competition.

7. But the situation is slowly changing. I have heard from friends at IIMB that the FPM program there is becoming highly research focused. Many fresh foreign PhDs have joined as faculty and they bring with them expertise to publish in top tier journals. Also, if the IIMs have to compete in a global arena, they need to have research output and the IIMs are aware of that. Recently I had read that at IIMC, the incentive to publish and present at top tier conferences has been revised to make research more attractive.

I hope this helps. Long post because this question has been asked several times. I have tried to be as unbiased as possible.
@sb29 thanks a lot for yr inputs and I wish you be the very best in whatever u do !!

hi puys

my profile goes as follows:
B.Sc - 80 %
PGDM from tier II school- 67%
Work ex with an IT company approx 3 yrs

i am keen on applying to the sociology and behavioural sciences streams of iimc. Do you think my profile would be a good match? iimc has an option in their form of 'have taken or will take' exam (gmat in my case), does that mean i can opt to send in the marksheet at a later date ? Also Socio doesn't have the gmat criterion option... will that be a disadvantage? do reply

sb29

u have answered a lot of my queries very thoroughly without even me asking... thanks a lot...

i have delved in sociological and philosophical theory myself and feel i may be more inclined towards this rather than practice. based on your information, could you possibly evaluate/ comment on the research done in the various iims (especially B, C, R, R) pertaining to this aspect.
hi
My cat 2012 score 90.42 (91.8 - q, 83.4 - v), 10th -93.4, 12lth - 86, B.tech - 77% No work ex. . Are there any chances for any call
Please help

Hey guys.. Has anyone filled FPM form for IIM Calcutta yet?
For Online form, is it completely online or do we need to send hard copy as well after submitting it online. Also what about recommendation letters? is it also online or hardcopy need to be send. I cant find this detail under instructions.
Thanks

@vjjani
With a mere 73 percentile in cat....is there even a remote chance of getting shortlisted....???
I guess i know the answer.....
Well another query ....IIMB website says one can apply without any score....Can i do so even though i have a valid cat score...
@indianhoshi Hi. I don't think I am in a position to comment on the research done at these institutes as I don't have any first hand information. However if you want to look at research output of various schools (all over the world), do search for 'utd top 100' in Google.

IS financial assistance in FPM program from IIM available to all the students ?

My profile is :--

X marks :--80%
XII marks :-- 81%
B.TECH(CSE):--8.34(out of 10)
CAT 2013 score :- 81 percentile

Am i eligible to get selected fr FPM ??

Is there any other good college in India with this year CAT score for PGP with nominal fee ??

Hi
I am currently doing B.tech in Electronics and am interested in joining the fpm 2013 programme in ob and hr due to my interest in the field. I am interested to do research in motivation and leadership and I'd like to help people achieve what they feel is impossible for them.

My scores are as follows:
CAT 2012 90 percentile
10th 93.4%
12lth 86%
grad 77%
One research project in Electronics and one ongoing research paper.

What are my chances of getting admitted into the programme.

Regards
Urman
@cn22

at 73 one should not think anything....

for IIM B u are still eligible.....but u have to do amazingly well to get through RAT and reach interview level...dont mention ur CAT score in application...that should be OK...
@cn22 as an FPM participant, u wudn't have much to do with the PGP students (ofcourse only as far as acads are concerned) and wud have specific requirements for all the courses you take (even in the 1st year, when u share classrooms, schedules, etc. with them)...whether u want to/are able to make yourself a part of the PGP community is purely a subjective issue 😛 !
@jainrohit2013 yes...the non-competitive components of subsistence are offered to all the participants; and please direct your PGP-related queries to relevant threads on PG to get your answers!!
