Fpm 2013

By asking about acceptance of masters done in the UK, I assume you mean if you can get a first-year waiver. If that be the case, different colleges have different criteria, such as place from where u have done your masters, whether the area faculty still considers doing a first year at IIM necessary etc.
If your question was about accepting masters done in UK in general, the answer is yes. There are such students in FPM programs of different colleges.

Technically, UK masters degree is not a recognized qualification in India. I do not know your previous qualification but I will give you different scenarios.

If you have a 4 years bachelors degree (engineering), then you automatically become eligible for FPM. The UK masters degree is then an (unofficially) recognized as a PG degree.

If you have a 3 yrs bachelors and 1 years masters degree, then it becomes tricky. AIU does not recognize 1 year masters as equivalent to a masters in India for admission to PhD programs. Many FPM programs are endorsed by AIU as equivalent to PhD.

That being said, what @[169546:drish] said is also true. I know a person with 3+1 UK masters who got final admit at IIMA last year (though he joined elsewhere).

In case you belong to the second category, I would strongly suggest that you take a written clarification for the institute concerned that your degree is valid for FPM.

Thanks a lot for the help guys... I have a B.E and then a masters...so hopefully I will be eligible. My question was pertaining to eligibility. Now I guess the next thing to do is get cracking on the GMAT :). Please help me out with one more query if possible I am thinking of doing my FPM from ISB would they be more open to the PG degree from the UK?

All the institutes (including IIMs and ISB) will be open to accepting your masters degree. What I posted was just a technicality which students have faced (at places other than IIMs). The person I was talking about (with a UK masters) is at ISB now. You may get in touch with him.

Thank you @[83412:sb29]

@[83412:sb29] can you help me with an intro to the person you mentioned earlier. Thank you for the help

@[602860:Adymos] Go to ISB's current student's page, you will find him there. You can also go to FPM 2011 thread and find him there. Just drop him a PM.

Hi Seniors,

I am evaluating my profile for FPM.

My Profile:

10th : 76.8%
12th : 71.1%
BE (CSE) : 74.23%
Work Ex: (a)3.6 years with an Indian IT MNC.

Worked in Porfolio Management, Asset Managment and Capital Markets domain for Fortune

top 10 client.Currently working as a Business Analyst for a Business Intelligence Roadmap Strategy project relating to Risk Mgmt in Capital Markets.

(b) Worked as a visiting Lecturer for 5 month in Engg college, (during the wait for my joining for current job, as I had got campus placement) .

Attempted CFA L1 in June but couldn't clear, planning to appear in

Dec 12 but unsure as left with very little time to prepare and need to appear for CAT as well.

Certificate for beginners in Financial Markets from NSE.

I am keenly interested to work in academics and I enjoyed my short tenure while teaching much more than my current job. I like research and writing.

I would be appearing for CAT 2012.

Could you please suggest, doing an MBA first or directly focussing on FPM would be a better choice for me?

I am equally interested in IT and finance, which specialization would be more suitable to opt.

Looking forward for your insights and guidance.

Regards,
Deepti

The issue of MBA followed by FPM vs direct FPM is one in which different people have different opinions, and there are merits in both...Take a call based on what you want to do in life ahead, which career/sector attracts you more, will you be able to do a Phd at a later stage in life or will the current time be more suitable for it, and other factors...
There is also nothing like "more suitable specialization"...Choose a specialization either a) because you have interest in it (and background in it) and you want to pursue research in it, b) interest in it (but little or no background), and you can devote at least 4-5 years of FPM for it...Whichever field you choose, you will be asked questions and reasons for it in the interview, so be prepared for it..But, first of all ask questions from self regarding the two subjects...Finally, every specialization is suitable as long as you have interest in it and as long as you keep working in it !

Puys I had a small query. When you apply for FPM do you need to also submit a write up of your research idea?

@Adymos said: Puys I had a small query. When you apply for FPM do you need to also submit a write up of your research idea?

This depends on the institute. IIMA and ISB both required SOP. XLRI required a very small write-up about 'why FPM'. I think L requires research idea. Best would be to check the website of each institute.

It is good to have an idea as it helps during the interview. While choosing the idea, make sure that it is neither too narrow nor too broad.

Most FPM programs in India make you undergo the first year with MBA students. So you won't lose out on the 'experience'. The first year is the most touch/hectic/exciting.

Thanks @[169546:drish] for your response. Yes you are correct I need to choose the field of specialization based on my interests only.

Hello Guys

I am interested in pursuing a doctoral programme from a good institute in India but what troubles me is my botched up profile. Here are my academic details -

10th - 80.33 %

12th - 63.69 %

B.E. - 66.3 %

MBA (pursuing from FMS BHU) - 68.xx % till second semester.

Work experience - 9 months

The trouble with my profile is that due to a back, I could complete my engineering in 5.5 years instead of 4, and all this time I did nothing else. I developed interest in teaching and research in last few months and now contemplating about entering into academics as I am not inclined towards private sector jobs. I want to work in the field I love and that is why I want to go for Ph.D.

My queries to the fellow PGs are as follows -

1) How should I use this one year at my disposal to present myself as a worthy candidate for doctoral programme (considering my past 'glorious' academic record)

2) IIMs are far fetched thoughts, especially now that I have gone through the profiles of the persons in this and last year's thread. I am planning to appear in UGC NET as well so the knowledge about some good colleges, other than IIMs, which seek CAT/NET score will also be helpful. So can someone guide me about it?

I am already running 3-4 years behind my peers in graduation and I need to make a firm decision about my career in this one year only. I hope the guys here would help me in taking good decision.

Thanks in advance :)

Thanks in advance for your help and reply!

good to know that u r interested in fpm

i will try to answer ur queries...

1.RAT of B or I is similar to CAT but easier version....in some areas B do take area specific written test along wid RAT
2. interview mostly about ur research interest...u need to have something in mind, not pin pointed research proposal but a broad understanding of subject and what u want to do...why FPM?? what after FPM?? etc...they want to assess u whether u r fit for fpm or not...
3. no publication required....
4.generally they dont ask gk..occasionally...but it's better to know a bit..
5. no requirement of knowledge about each subject of mba...u should have basic knowledge about area u are applying to...
6. u should have basic knowledge..not in depth knowledge...in depth knowledge u will gain during advanced area courses taught to fpm students..

@[258134:prateektheway] Why not apply for IIM? or ISB? I have a few friends who had the a year back in Engg but got a good CAT score and got into IIM. I know it is difficult but that does not mean not to try.

Thanks for your feedback. I am looking forward to research in the field of Marketing.

Also, can you please tell me what was the last year's cut-off for the top institutes.

In most institutes, there is no such cut-off. They look at your overall profile which includes CAT scores. I would suggest that you go through previous years' threads to get an idea of the profiles and scores of call-getters.
