Rocking it at IIT when You're 49!
Can you imagine a lady who is the same age as your mom studying with you in college? She could double-up as the counsellor as you approach her with your problems and regale you with stories of her adventures. Students of a particular batch at IIT-Madras do have such a special classmate.
It's never too late to do anything, they say, and 49-year-old Padma Sundari, who's doing her Masters in Industrial Mathematics and Scientific Computing at IIT-Madras in a class of twenty somethings, will tell you the same.
Padma now gets to pursue Mathematics, which she always wanted to study further, gets to stay at a hostel, and gets to have an entirely different generation of students as her classmates, for whom she also acts as the agony aunt.
Having worked at an MNC for four years before, Padma took a break for four years before she applied for GATE, with a lot of encouragement from her husband. It is quite another thing that her husband can't wait for her to be back home now. "He is eagerly waiting, and is counting the days now," she says.
Padma has become something of a agony aunt to some of her classmates, who approach her with their troubles. "Some of them probably think I'm like their mother. Especially when they have troubles with their parents, they feel they can interact with me as a friend. I give them the granny kind of advice to put them off, but they still keep coming back," she laughs.
Getting into IIT is never easy, even if you are someone with ample experience of both work and life, and Padma had to work hard to crack GATE. "I had started systematic preparation for GATE about four months before the exam. I had to do it on top of all the housework, so it was a little hectic at the time." And in spite of her preparation, Padma didn't think much of her chances. "I wasn't even hoping to qualify in GATE," she laughs.
It has been over 20 months since she began her course, and yet she vividly remembers what a classmate told her on her first day. After she had introduced herself, the student had quipped, "Oh I wasn't even born when you finished your MSc," which makes her laugh even now. "The other students say I inspire them, which makes me happy," she adds.
Her story of a trip to Ladakh is almost a part of campus folklore now, and after listening to her story, it's easy to see why.
"It was in 2004 when I was thinking of visiting Ladakh. One of my friends was posted in Leh, and he had been calling me. I thought he was kidding, so I said ok why not, but turns out he was serious. That was how it started. I had to do some preparation to find out if I could really do it or was I just being crazy. And then three senior citizens - my father, my neighbor and I - drove from Bangalore to Leh and back, over 8,000 km in 26 days. And I was the only driver." As simple as that.

A venturimeter in an oil (sp. gr. 0.8) pipe is connected to a differential manometer in which the gauge liquid is mercury (sp. gr.13.6). For a flow rate of 0.16 m3/s, the manometer registers a gauge differential of 20 cm. The oil-mercury manometer being unavailable, an air-oil differential manometer is connected to the same venturimeter. Neglecting variation of discharge coefficient for the venturimeter, what is the new gauge differential for a flow rate of 0.08 m3/s?
a. 64 cm
b. 68 cm
c. 80 cm
d. 85 cm
