Hi Guys,
Had the gd pi at YMCA on 6th.
GD
A very nice case. Couldnt have asked for a better framed problem. An assistant to the general manager has brought the CV of his neice for appointment in a post that has come up in the finance dept. The GM sends the CV to the HR Dept for screening. The Assistant gets pissed off because he believes that as he has been working loyally in the company for the last 15 years, his neice must be appointed right away.....now GM bhai saab is in a fix.........but GMs problems were nothing compared to the one we GIM aspirants were going to land in.....
The GD started.
There were 30 second openings. As expected some spoke well...while some were left wondering where the hell 30 seconds slipped by by the time they completed their ummmmms and aaaahs....Past experience had taught me that 30secs are too less, you cant think and speak, so guys who have their gds left. Memorise what u wanna speak aur seedha bak do. Socho mat....cos you cant think and speak in 30 secs.
Then the pandemonium began.
The opening happened and then the noise level began to sore.
People were like aisa hona chaiye...waisa hona chaiye...yeh acchi baat nahi hai....meritocracy chahiye...nepotism.nahi hona chaiye.... yeh woh....
the group was then urged to dump this wider discussion or debate and concentrate on what the poor GM must do in this little caselet which could prove to be that ticket to goa.
Par koi sunne ko tayyar nahi. A girl at the fag end of the table was trying in vain to bring order but she got no support and the GD was turning out to be the baap of all fish markets.....
So finally one of the Panelist stepped in (probably he feared the roof coming down) and said "I know the time is not yet up....(and my heart skipped a beat....entire groups being disqualified for fishmarketing is not unheard of)....but now its time everyone sum up their thoughts in one minute each.
So in this way the fish market went into a circuit breaker a la stock markets.
The sum ups were good and mirrored common thoughts that th Manager shud follow proper procedure and he shud try to assuage the miffed assistant. (then wonder why so much shouting happened)
I just have 2 words dudes and dudettes...."God Knows"...
Thank You

My center for GIM GD\PI was IIMB(what a lush green campus, can tempt anyone to write CAT once again)
It was case study on a company whose employees were cheating on that company by using the office time for some other work and were also using the company resources for that. There was this particular guy who was very candid about this and was earning just 8000 bucks per month and had a newly born baby to support.
was a a good discussion as everyone chipped in with good air time and sufficiently decent points but in the end it was becoming monotonous and bell rang at perfect time. The only thing I didn't liked about the GT was that it was clearly mentioned to us that we should not waste our time in opening and closing statements talking about the general stuff but should directly come to our views and that was not followed by most of us(may be including me).wrote the summary in the end(I am not very satisfied with it:-() as I am very slow in writing.overall did a decent job by bringing decent points(some of them were taken by group)
Now came the biggest shock to me
There was this guy before me who was interviewed for just five minutes and when he came out I was telling him that I think they had taken his pic and sent him outside and the panel is going to judge him on the basis of his pic(I know lame)
My turn came and they told me to wait outside for some time.I nodded and waited outside.
Now I entered the room with their permission and greeted them.:-) with a typical smile.
P1-strict guy.
P2-Nice madam with a Colgate smile.
P1-tell me why should we take you.
Me-told them about my good academic performance throughout and extra curricular activities, was about to say something about my work-ex.but he cut me short.:-
P2 checked my file and came across satellite communication and optical fiber as one of the subjects.
P2-tell me about satellite and optical fiber.
Me-told her about both.mentioned about total internal reflection in OF communication
P2-do the landline uses OFs
Me-after some thinking told her that broadband does but not the landline telephone cables.she nodded.
P1-tell me difference between bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Me-told something:-
P2-what other calls do you have?
Me-told.(madam smiled )
P1-thank you we are done.
My reactions would have been worth watching..I somehow stupidly blurted out "thats it!!"
and they said "yes".
I wished them good day and came out.Everyone waiting outside started laughing at me.don't know what to make out of it.Keeping my fingers crossed.
hey dude i believe ur PI was short bcoz of ur profile........like gud workx, gud XAT score and good acads........i dnt see a reason y u will not get a call
The gd was a chaos - the panelists seemed irritated with us - They were kind enough to not mention the gt in the pi

how was ur PI??????????
Sorry puys for the late post...was a bit busy in office. My GD/PI was held on the 7th of March, 2008, at YMCA (Colaba), Mumbai. I was in the morning slot.
GD was a case study on whether a company should go beyond it's medical policy and provide expensive medical assistance to a secretary. It was a good discussion and everyone was extremely civil in the GD - a point which went down very well with the panelists (Sarita Fernandes-S and Mihir Mohapatra-M). All in all, it was a very good discussion.
I was the 7th person to be interviewed that day. All interviews before mine had taken something like 15-20 min. When they called me in...
S: Good morning, please have a seat.
Me: Good morning ma'am, sir. Thank you.
S: So, Sumedh, tell me something abt urself.
Me: (I started with the answer I had prepared, talking abt my hobbies first. Then, I went onto my work, giving them a brief idea.)
S: (looking interested) So, u worked with debt markets.
Me: Yes, ma'am.
S: So, tell me ur opinion, in general is the debt market more active than the stock market?
Me: No, ma'am, I think the equity market is a lot more volatile than the debt market.
S: Then why do ppl invest in the debt market?
Me: That's partly because the debt market assures a definite return on investment, albeit a slow one. Also, RBI regulations require banks and other NBFCs to invest a portion of their net worth in G Secs.
S: Do you follow the international debt market?
Me: No, ma'am, I do not.
S: That's ok. Tell me more abt ur current assignment.
Me: (explained in detail abt my role as PMO)
M: Can I see ur XAT marksheet?
(I showed him)
M: U have a very good percentile. U must have got other calls also, right?
Me: Yes sir, I have got calls from XLRI and XIMB.
S: On what basis did u shortlist XLRI, XIMB and GIM as colleges u wanted to apply to?
Me: Since I didnt have any relative in the mgmt field, I had to rely a lot on the advice of my seniors in college. Plus, I also scoured the net for information and networked with other aspirants for information (PG - 😉 ) Also, my Dad inquired with his colleagues who had children studying in mgmt. Lastly, I also looked at various rankings for B-schools.
S: (smiles) Do you think rankings show a complete picture?
Me: No ma'am, to be very frank, I dont think they do. But, at the same time, they also give an indication abt the potency of the institute, which acts as one of the many inputs one should consider to arrive at a decision.
M: Rankings help u know that the institute is there...
Me: ...and that it is a decent one too, sir!
M: Hmm...why is ur quant percentile the lowest in ur XAT score?
Me: Frankly sir, quant is my weakest subject amongst the 3 tested in XAT.
M: Did u have Statistics as a subject in college?
Me: Sir, we did study statistics, but that was only in 4th sem. However, I will again have to remind you of my previous statement abt quant. (smiling slightly)
M: (outright laughing now) Ok...that's not a problem.
S: (looking at M....) Ok, that will be all. Thank you.
Me: Thank you sir, ma'am...have a good day.
(The interview lasted for only 7-8 minutes! I dont know what to think. The interview itself was good per se, but the very short time is worrying me.)
nitiksh Sayshow was ur PI??????????
Oh Bhai Nitiksh, didnt understand the point of reposting my post about that pathetic gd....and that has earned also you a coveted groan from the self appointed Moderator of this thread, His Royal Highness Sir Roy Keane, OBE, CBE, FRCS, Etc etc.....
Anyway, do put a version of yours too. My account is quite inadequate.
(@ His Royal Highness Sir Roy Keane, OBE, CBE, FRCS Etc Etc.....I know there is something called PM but because I am posting so slipped this message to Nitiksh)
Guys,
There is something about GIM PIs.
More often than not. They are quite chill. But when you leave the hall, if u are not getting selected, you know it. Last year I had people, who were absolutely sure they wont get thru (me included). And none of them got thru.
So even if you have a minor doubt regarding your PI....IT MEANS YOU HAVE DONE WELL AND YOU DO HAVE A CHANCE.
IF you have a small hunch that I may have made it yaaar...then fikar not...you surely have a good chance. Cos in GIM either you are not sure...or very very sure....
So best of luck to all....keep praying.....

Gr8... thats the ultimate confidence booster anyone whose waiting for the results needs... do keep 'em coming...

sir,
confidence booster for sure, but i have to disagree.
the fact that you've missed out maybe because of sheer bad luck. i do not, for one, think its apt to be generalising things. in my case i was facing a jury who i felt was not keen on having me there. not once, not twice , but three times, they emphazised on the importance of work-ex.
the first 2 times i defended quite well saying that ' how the rigours of an mba program will make me competent enough to handle the blah blah , gave examples too) , but when someone reiterates the same thing again and again , then, you start having doubts.
yes, you have people emphasizing on the fact that how GIM wants to have a fine balance of freshies (read me) and the work-studs.
and what i feel may very well be a zilch, but i think i've got reasons enough to substantiate my claims.
30% i feel is not so fine indeed! i personally felt that they were looking at havin people with work-ex.
i think you'll not agree to what i'm saying and we might go on and on about this.
(when i come down to mumbai we can catch up, maybe discuss this over a drink or something)
but if i do make it , then your post will always be vivid in my mind.
cheers n regards ;)
disclaimer - my personal opinion. i have put forth what i felt was happening during the entire interview process .constructive criticism always welcome.

'if' i get in GIM then i'll treat you to all the damn drinks in the world.
but the way things have unfolded , i doubt whether i'll make it. sir's work-ex 'funda' still keeps haunting me.
as of now,
probability of me marrying maria sharapova > probability of me making it into GIM
ps - i'm a teetotaller

Hey guys,
Ankit Khandelwal here from the batch of 2007-09. My apologies for being absent for long.
Was just going through this page. There are certain points i wanna make. :)
@ Sir Roy
I haven't read your entire GD/ PI experience, but i will still say optimism is the key. Don't wait your chances. The interviewers don't always show what they actually mean.
@ AMIT
Prayers do help, I did a lot of it.
@ Nitiksh
TITO is not close to the college dude. It will take at least 30 minutes to reach the place. And if u wanna njoy a drink, there are a lot of better places here in GOA. Why do u want to go there and pay more?
In fact there is Gene's right outside GIM gates.
So relax.
BTW...
Me too a teetotaler

Hey Dude,
As has been already established that the GIM panelist are not into the business of grilling people to see how good they are. In the old days of gold mining, newbie miners would burn the ore to see if it was worth the effort in mining, while experienced guys could just look at the ore and say how good it was. I think GIM panelist come under that category, they like to observe you under normal circumstances. Talk to you and find out if u are good enough
As for Sir Roys experience, it seems it was a purposeful departure from the ususal style of interviewing. Maybe to break the monotony. Even in my exp last year, I was given 101 reasons not to do an MBA. I was even told that the MBA will not do good to my career.so just chill, u did ur job by cracking the XAT, they did their job, leave the rest to the almighty..
And now putting an end to my feel good factor and confidence boosters. Guys its a hard number game. Recall the tie wearing crowd at your YMCAIIMB..IIS.XAVIERSGIMONE OUT OF TEN WILL GET SELECTEDIN OTHER WORDSNINE OUTTA TEN WILL GET THROWN OUT.BEST OF LUCKKPRAY HARDER HE HE
And guys,
Sir Keane could be talking of any drink naa....not necessarily alcoholic ones. Sure Sir, it will be my priviledge.
CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL LEADS TO CANCER. DONT DRINK. (I hope I am not groaned at for misusing the gd pi thread for anti alcohol campaigns....but chalta hai....)
YMCAIIMB..IIS.XAVIERSGIMONE OUT OF TEN WILL GET SELECTEDIN OTHER WORDSNINE OUTTA TEN WILL GET THROWN OUT.BEST OF LUCKKPRAY HARDER HE HE
thanks for bring us into reality
The pi was nice...they asked me about electronics..my interests...the books i read ... and something about the Indian economy...it was more like a nice chat...

Hmmmm..Overall a chilled out experience....Lets see...optimistic coz of a decent experience and high score!!
why prepare at all for job related questions, if everything on your resume is self-explanatory? Agreed, they can't actually know how much u've learnt in such a short duration but that's where ur preparation comes in. U may have learnt a lot, but if u are unable to express it well, you will lose out on the points. And if u express to their satisfaction(even if u don't know much), you'll certainly gain.....
this is profound
Hey was anybody told during the GD-PI as to when will the GIM results be out !
