GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

United States hospitals have traditionally relied primarily on revenues from paying patients to offset losses from unreimbursed care. Almost all paying patients now rely on governmental or private health insurance to pay hospital bills. Recently, insurers have been strictly limiting what they pay hospitals for the care of insured patients to amounts at or below actual costs.

Which of the following conclusions is best supported by the information above?
(A) Although the advance of technology has made expensive medical procedures available to the wealthy, such procedures are out of the reach of low-income patients.
(B) If hospitals do not find ways to raising additional income for unreimbursed care, they must either deny some of that care of suffer losses if they give it.
(C) Some patients have incomes too high for eligibility for governmental health insurance but are unable to afford private insurance for hospital care.
(D) If the hospitals reduce their costs in providing care, insurance companies will maintain the current level of reimbursement, thereby providing more funds for unreimbursed care.
(E) Even though philanthropic donations have traditionally provided some support for the hospitals, such donations are at present declining.

IMO - B

A,C & E --- Not suggested in the passage. Assumptions, not conclusions
D -- close but 'insurance companies will maintain the current' make it an assumption, cause we don't know that whether the insurance companies will maintain the same rate.
Folks, which one do you choose and why ?

Some of the greatest American entrepreneurs of the 20th century started their business ventures while they were still in college, and could not complete their education as a result. It is possible that had they started their businesses any later, they would not have been as successful.
From the above two statements, it can only be proven that
(A) sometimes, it can be worthwhile to sacrifice an immediate gain for a larger benefit.
(B) education is not always useful.
(3) it pays not to complete an education.
(D) entrepreneurs who start their ventures after completing their education are not as successful as those who start off while still in college.
(E) you do not have to be educated to be an entrepreneur.

all computers manufactured after 1998 have a minimum processing speed of 400 mhz. My computer has a processing speed of 399 mhz.
Which of the following can definitely not be concluded from the above statements?
I) my computer was definitely manufactured after 1998.
Ii) my computer may have been manufactured in 1998.
Iii) if it had been manufactured a year later, my computer would have had a faster processing speed.
(a) i only
(b) ii only
(3) iii only
(d) i and iii only
(e) ii and iii only

According to a study by the Human Resources Ministry, between 1950 and 1980, the number of beggars in India continued to increase but at a rate lower than that of the Indian population.

Which of the following statements directly contradicts the information above?

(A) The number of beggars in the general population increased slightly in the thirty year period between 1950 and 1980.

(B) The proportion of beggars in the Indians below the poverty line remained constant over the thirty year period.

(3) The rate of increase in the number of people below the poverty line was more than the rate of growth of the general population over the thirty year period.

(D) The proportion of beggars in the general population increased from 22% in 1950 to 26% in 1980.

(E) The ratio of beggars in the total population of India was half as much as the ratio of the unemployed in the general population of the country.

IMO -- D

The % of beggars should have decreased if the above statement were true.

I would have marked option D

Premise:
Recently, insurers have been strictly limiting what they pay hospitals for the care of insured patients to amounts at or below actual costs.
Meaning:
Insurers were easy on payments sometime back..

Premise:
United States hospitals have traditionally relied primarily on revenues from paying patients to offset losses from unreimbursed care. Almost all paying patients now rely on governmental or private health insurance to pay hospital bills.
Meaning:
the costs are too high to be taken care by individuals.. means cost of medical care has been raised..

Conclusion:
Insurers will comply with the liniency only if the medical costs are not making hole in their pockets... so medical procedures must cost lesser..

thanks man.. ;)

interesting OA.. since GMAT does not prefer or promote extreme answers.. I discarded that option as this sounded way to extreme to me..

(B) If hospitals do not find ways to raising additional income for unreimbursed care, they must either deny some of that care of suffer losses if they give it.

thanks for clarifying though..

Hey Bud... you are correct GMAC dont prefer extreme answers, However for this CR , POE gives you this answer, now we can not reject it as its extreme answer. If POE gives you 2 answers and one of them is extreme.. we shld not go with it.

Thats the reason i wanted this CR to be discussed πŸ˜ƒ

Hardin argued that grazing land held in common (that is, open to any user) would always be used less carefully than private grazing land. Each rancher would be tempted to overuse common land because the benefits would accrue to the individual, while the costs of reduced land quality that results from overuse would be spread among all users. But a study comparing 217 million acres of common grazing land with 433 million acres of private grazing land showed that the common land was in better condition
Which of the following, if true, and known by the ranchers, would best help explain the results of the study?
(A) With private grazing land, both the costs and the benefits of overuse fall to the individual user.
(B) The cost in reduced land quality that is attributable to any individual user is less easily measured with common land than it is with private land.
(C) An individual who overuses common grazing land might be able to achieve higher returns than other users can, with the result that he or she would obtain a competitive advantage.
(D) If one user of common land overuses it even slightly, the other users are likely to do so even more, with the consequence that the costs to each user outweigh the benefits.
Here the consequences of overused land are to be borne by all users, irrespective of amount of overuse done by any person.... no user would prefer to pay for the land which he hasnt used as much as others... so that can be the reason for less use of common land.... so.(D)...

(E) There are more acres of grazing land held privately than there are held in common.

IMO it is B.

(A) sometimes, it can be worthwhile to sacrifice an immediate gain for a larger benefit.
education cannot give immediate gain
(B) education is not always useful.
IMO Correct ans
(C) it pays not to complete an education.

(D) entrepreneurs who start their ventures after completing their

this cannot be proven from the passage as nothing is told about enterpreneurs who start their venture after college.
(E) you do not have to be educated to be an entrepreneur.

A product that represents a clear technological advance over competing products can generally command a high price. Because technological advances tend to be quickly surpassed and companies want to make large profits while they still can, many companies charge the greatest price the market will bear when they have such a product. But large profits on the mew product will give competitors a strong incentive to quickly match the mew product's capabilities. Consequently, the strategy to maximize overall profit from a new product is to charge less than the greatest possible price.

In the argument above, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first is an assumption that forms the basis for a course of action that the argument criticizes; the second presents the course of action endorsed by the argument.

B. The first is a consideration raised to explain the appeal of a certain strategy; the second is a consideration raised to call into question the wisdom of adopting that strategy.

C. The first is an assumption that has been used to justify a certain strategy; the second is a consideration that is used to cast doubt on that assumption.

D. The first is a consideration raised in support of a strategy the argument endorses; the second presents grounds in support of that consideration.

E. The first is a consideration raised to show that adopting a certain strategy is unlikely to achieve the intended effect; the second is presented to explain the appeal of that strategy.

IMO: B

Clearly the first portion is no assumption, it is a clear premise provided. So, A and C are out.
D - Second portion contradicts the stance provided by the first one. So out.
E - First bold face does not say that the intended effect cannot be reached, so not E

& can be eliminated as the first statement is not an assumption in any way....

- As per this option, second statement supports the first one, which is not the case. so this can be eliminated.

- According to this, first statement shows a strategy which doesnt work, but that's not true.... the strategy does work as per the passage, though for limited period.. so this can be eliminated...

i just hate BFCR...
Can you throw some more light on why B and not D?
i just hate BFCR...
Can you throw some more light on why B and not D?

pj02,
When you encounter a BFCD, a simple technique that helped me a lot is,
"sentence ka meaning ko maro goli'..."Idhar iss sentence ka kaam kya hai"
- These are the thoughts.

There is significance of thinking in Hindi (Mother tongue) in this scenario. And that is, you get OUT of the meaning of the paragraph...the premise, the conclusion....blah blah blah. It will help you concentrate on what is needed.

Anyways....for this CR:
Its NOT D because the second BF statement, does NOT support the first one.

From the first statement: Technology gets surpassed quickly - So if you base your profit based on a product that is very Tech dependent, then you will obviously produce a better product, and thereby increase profit.

From the second statement: Looking at this story in the local magazine (*wink*), your competitors will get the same tech installed in their factories and start producing...so, will eventually increase their prices as well.

Therefore: The best thing for our company owner to do is "Stay off the Radar" right?
So, Stmt 2 is opposing the stance taken by Stmt 1.
Hence B.
