In addition to it , I have also picked option E as answer, the reason being parallelism.
Please correct me where I am going wrong as in the book detailed explanation is not given.


A and E seem good contenders.

However wen you look closely, you will find that option E does not show the exact cause and effect shown in the original sentence. I would interpret as meaning getting distorted in option E.

Option E.
As (X) becomes greater, the speed of (Y) for adequate performance becomes higher.
(I believe meaning is distorted a lil bit in option E)

Now option A (Original sentence)
The greater of (X), the higher of (Y) you need for adequate performance.

(option A is parallel too, and does not distorts the meaning. Thus the best choice)

Option A is parallel without distorting the meaning. Look at option A closely again, "the greater of this, the higher of this you need for...."
