Hi Vyomb ,just trying to put my views but am not sure on this. But juxtaposing the other puys views on the same line will ascertain.
set1.second
set2.first
I think use of more in comparing should give full meaning when use with then.apply this to the set 1 sentence-
Elderly in the united states are four times more likely to give regular financial aid then XYZ
Minority students are four times more likely to get financial aid then XYZ
here the second sentence makes more clear comparision.

Second sentence-

Elderly in the united states are four times as likely to give regular financial aid as XYZ
Minority students are four times (as likely as to get financial aid) as likely to get financial aid as XYZ
here the second one will be more pronounced if usage chaged like the above.

in both cases MORE LIKELY will be correct because AS LIKELY AS = IN EQUAL AMOUNT = HAVING EQUAL LIKELIHOOD. So u can'y say that X is four times as likely as.... It has to be MORE

Hope it helped
Puys, i'm disappointed because I posted the question to have an explaination as why do you think that your choice is correct?

Looking at the replies, i didn't find any answers with explaination...

Here are the answers, but I guess, its not the meaning of having this forum here.

Please post the explaination for the answers you choose...

@amsey1382:
I understand your pain.. but do even u relaize that typing the explanations for all 3 questions at one go would take substantial amount of time..??..

I think I posted a similar msg in past also (and if I am not mistaken to you only) that if you need proper explanations to any of your doubts then its best that you put just one doubt/questions at a time... seeing multiple questions at a time just kills the zeal to explain or even explore..

I am not trying to lay down any regulations or anything, rather just sharing a piece of my mind.. have a gr8 day!! πŸ˜‰

Hi Friends,

I have come across this SC , please help

1. A recent study has found that within the past few years, many doctors had elected early retirement rather than face the threats of lawsuits and the rising costs of malpractice insurance.

1. had elected early retirement rather than face
2. had elected early retirement instead of facing
3. have elected retiring early instead of facing
4. have elected to retire early rather than facing
5. have elected to retire early rather than face

I feel either choice 4 or choice 5 is correct. But, can't choose between them as Rather Than takes both face/facing.

HI Somnath,
I go with 5. "X rather than Y" is the idiom and x and Y must be parallel. So, only 5 satisfies this rule. "facing" indicates continuity of action, and that is not the logical meaning of the sentence.

Any alternative explanation Puys?

I will go with 4. rather than facing......and the rising...goes fine..they follow parallelism

I think the answer provided by Siddahrth is more logical. Here , parallel structure will be for "Rather Than",so retire and facing does not conform to this.

Puys, any alternative explntn?

When the main clause has to-infinitive, rather than is usually followed by an infinitive without to or an -ing form.
So I will go for 5th option

I think the answers are
1.D. Unwilling to shoulder the entire risk, the publishers insisted the author should pay half the cost of the initial print run of his controversial new book.
2.A. Your taking a loan to buy a car annoyed Father.
3.B. and I, I doubt that he would come

C. which was centuries old already when we first hear of the establishment of

E. that was already centuries old by the time we first hear that they had established

I think the answer is A.

The modifier is talking abt the town. Here in C the placement of already is some what not convincing for me. Rest of the options are pretty much incorrect.

Hello,

The answer to this definitely has to be (E). Here's why:

Look at the verb tense "has found". it is not past and not in the future. So the underlined part of the sentence should contain the same verb tense. The most appropriate would be the use of "have elected".
So options 1 and 2 are ruled out.
Let's check the rest.
Option 3: Incorrect idomatic usage. The correct usage shoukld be "elected to". hence this is wrong.
Option 4 and 5:
Option 5 is better because the verb tense throughout the sentence remains the same. You cannnot use a present perfect tense "have been" and "has found" and then suddently change to present continous form of "facing".

Hopt this helps.
IN case of any queries or questions, ask me and I'll tell u why I am right :-P
