(B) by using the companies earnings and by profiting
I think the answer is option C; you 'signal' 'something' and that 'something' should be placed next to 'signal'. Waiting for the correct answer....
Dude, the info that u've provided abt idioms is indeed useful. Mind naming the source?
My two cents:
"X enough to Y" is used when the emphasis is on Y. "So X as to Y" is used when the emphasis is on X. For example, "I am tall enough to touch the ceiling" implies that the focus is on the fact of being able to touch the ceiling. "So tall as to be able to touch the ceiling" implies that the focus is on the fact of being tall. (Source: Manhattan)

Question:.Interest rates on mortgages have declined steadily during the first six months of this year but virtually remained unchanged during the next three months.
(A) have declined steadily during the first six months of this year but virtually remained unchanged -> probably answer...
(B) declined steadily during the first six months of this year but virtually remain unchanged
-> remain should be remained (C) steadily declined during the first six months of this year but remain virtually unchanged ->same as B
(D) declined steadily during the first six months of this but have remained virtually unchanging ->this ??? (E) declined steadily during the first six months of this year but have remained virtually unchanged -> the other probable answer
Cheers ! :drinking:
monitoring A and E very closely, we see that there is a sequence of events. 1.what happened during the first 6 months 2.what happened during the next 3 months
In sentence which has a sequence of time.... the oldest is written in past tense while the suceeding action is written in perfect tense ( depending on the sentence it may be past, continuous or future ).
I think E looks better than A coz during past 6 month doesnt really need HAVE.
OA please..........

i think u're right, hadn't taken into account this error.
My pick E. Have ramained in A is incorrect. Remain unchanged kicks out B and C. D is pathetic. In E, use of have doesn't look very convincing but its the best we got.

According to a survey of graduating medical students conducted by the Association of American Medical Colleges, minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than are other graduates in planning to practice in socioeconomically deprived areas.
(A) minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than are other graduates in planning to practice (B) minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than other graduates who plan on practicing (C) minority graduates are nearly four times as likely as other graduates to plan on practicing (D) it is nearly four times more likely that minority graduates rather than other graduates will plan to practice (E) it is nearly four times as likely for minority graduates than other graduates to plan to practice
Plural dioxins indicate they are countable. And it appears that they indeed are.

Will pick C. A. Likely in planning to.. Not good B likely who plan.. Not good either. D.and E what is "it" for? Discarded.
C is idiomatic. As likely as , likely to plan, plan on practicing. All good.

Any cable modem will occasionally fail to signal that there is a connection when it is present and mark that there is one when there is not.
A. that there is a connection when it is present and mark that there is one. "modem fails to signal that there is a connection" seems too wordy/ackward. B. when a connection is present and mark that there is one. when refers to time, focus is not to indicate the time but connection. C. a connection when it is present and mark that there is one. correct. D. the presence of a connection when it is there and mark its presence. signal presence of connection? it should be signal a connection, not its presence
I think B is correct. In C, signal a connection sounds like the modem is signalling to connection. Besides, "it" goes dangling if you take a closer look. Open to comments...
According to a survey of graduating medical students conducted by the Association of American Medical Colleges, minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than are other graduates in planning to practice in socioeconomically deprived areas.
(A) minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than are other graduates in planning to practice - correct (B) minority graduates are nearly four times more likely than other graduates who plan on practicing - wrongly compares minority graduates' likeness with other graduates. (C) minority graduates are nearly four times as likely as other graduates to plan on practicing - distorts the meaning of the original sentence. (D) it is nearly four times more likely that minority graduates rather than other graduates will plan to practice - wordy (E) it is nearly four times as likely for minority graduates than other graduates to plan to practice - wordy and distorts meaning

Question:.Interest rates on mortgages have declined steadily during the first six months of this year but virtually remained unchanged during the next three months.
(A) have declined steadily during the first six months of this year but virtually remained unchanged have remained - wrong usage, use simple past
(B) declined steadily during the first six months of this year but virtually remain unchanged C looks better than this
(C) steadily declined during the first six months of this year but remain virtually unchanged correct
(D) declined steadily during the first six months of this but have remained virtually unchanging unchanging - wrong (E) declined steadily during the first six months of this year but have remained virtually unchanged "have remained virtually unchanged"-- no indication whether it is unchanged today also.
Cheers ! :drinking:
Good one!
Confused but will go with B. Though had "have" not been there in E, I would have picked E for sure.
I think we are talking about 2 events, both in the past. There is no indication that the latter part of 3 months is continued into the present. Based on this, please find the explanation embedded in the post above.
