Scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in America found that active mice demonstrate a greater ability to learn, suggesting that exercise increases brain chemicals
"active mice demonstrate a greater ability to learn" this is an argument put forth..
this above arguments suggests that;
suggesting that exercise increases brain chemicals, i.e. Increased brain chemicals in mice..
connect both the arguments..
>> more brain chemicals = active mice
that(exercise that increases brain chemicals) makes them(mice) more resilient to cognitive deadline
does that help resolve the doubt.. ;)
Varun,
I dont think "it" is referring to brain chemicals. if it was so, the sentence would read as :
exercise increases brain chemicals that makes brain chemicals more resilient...." Does it sound right? Chemicals cant be made resilient. Here, mice become more reslient and hence "it" is referring to mice.
Now the question is what is making mice more resilient: excercise/chemicals?
I think chemicals, but would like to wait for oa before giving further lecture :)

Hi,
By adding comma in the sentence, one can make two clear distinctive sentences, which are joined by adding comma in between. As you can read option-B with full sentence:
Terrorist violence may represent some sub-national aspirations within a state system which, calls for a sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
Wheres in option-C:
In the case of other option, everything goes in one sentence, when you read it incorrect sentence formation one can notice without comma.
Terrorist violence may represent some sub-national aspirations within a state system which call for sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
Thanks for posting !
Regards,

Here's a new one... I am not posting the answers right now as requested.

a. that make it more resilient to cognitive deadline
b. that makes it more resilient to cognitive deadline
c. that make them more resilient to cognitive deadline
d. that makes them more resilient to cognitive deadline

Thanks,
attempting a bit late..
my ans is D.
Option A and B--can be eliminated easilty as mice(which is singular) is to be modified.
makes to be used along with them
Some more tricky ones:
1. The report says the risk of death is about the same from an aircraft crash and as similar as terrestrial accident such as a nuclear reactor meltdown.
a. the same from an aircraft crash and as similar as
b. the same from an aircraft crash and as similar to
c. the same as from an aircraft crash and as similar as
d. the same as from an aircraft crash and is similar to
e. the same as from an aircraft crash and as well as to
2. Terrorist violence may represent some sub-national aspirations within a state system which call on sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
a. which call on sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
b. which, calls for a sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
c. which call for sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
d. which calls for sympathizing understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
e. which calls upon sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
@heydharini.. really they are tricky specially the first one..

Q-2-Explanation-
-terrrorost violence is the cause or subject(singular)
-calls for is the correct idiom(it fits here)
a. the same from an aircraft crash and as similar as
b. the same from an aircraft crash and as similar to
c. the same as from an aircraft crash and as similar as
d. the same as from an aircraft crash and is similar to
e. the same as from an aircraft crash and as well as to
Hello Vyomb,
Could you please provide the exaplanation for the first question? Thanks.
Some more tricky ones:
1. The report says the risk of death is about the same from an aircraft crash and as similar as terrestrial accident such as a nuclear reactor meltdown.
a. the same from an aircraft crash and as similar as
b. the same from an aircraft crash and as similar to
c. the same as from an aircraft crash and as similar as
d. the same as from an aircraft crash and is similar to
e. the same as from an aircraft crash and as well as to
'similar to' ..is idiomatic..
Down to B,D,E
E is awkward...and as well as to ..
B is unidiomatic .. as similar to ..
left with D.
2. Terrorist violence may represent some sub-national aspirations within a state system which call on sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
a. which call on sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
b. which, calls for a sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
c. which call for sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
d. which calls for sympathizing understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
e. which calls upon sympathetic understanding of the systematic indignity that terrorists have gone through.
its all abt identifying subj.
Call upon / call on are undiomatic... A,E out..
D .. for awkward construction .. sympathizing understanding ..
left with B,C
which is modifying terrorist voilence so
B is the ans
my ans in red..
@heydharini.. really they are tricky specially the first one..

A) With
B) Although accounting for
C) Being
D) Despite having
E) As
It talks about "English people" and "one percent of the world's population".. so we should you appropriate option for relating the 2..
I would have marked option B
Another way of doin the same.. jumble it up..
English people, although accounting for only one percent of the world's population, have dramatically altered the course of the world
OS..
Although accounting for only one percent of the world's population, the English people have dramatically altered the course of the world
hope that helps ;)
Question:With only one percent of the world's population, the English people have dramatically altered the course of the world.
A) With
B) Although accounting for
C) Being
D) Despite having
E) As
(A) had he not been held in check by his superiors
(B) had his superiors not held him in check
(C) if his superiors had not held him in check
(D) if he was not held in check by his superiors
(E) when not held in check by his superiors
attack this one puys.
According to Herbert Essame, Patton might have accomplished more had he not been held in check by his superiors, Alexander in the Mediterranean and Eisenhower n Europe.
(A) had he not been held in check by his superiors
(B) had his superiors not held him in check
(C) if his superiors had not held him in check
(D) if he was not held in check by his superiors
(E) when not held in check by his superiors
attack this one puys.
this is tricky.. but to me it looks like a 'look-alike' of classic "if-then" SC exmaple..
According to Herbert Essame, Patton might have accomplished more ___________________, Alexander in the Mediterranean and Eisenhower n Europe.
using the if-then funda that comes first to my mind.. I would have filled in the blank space with something that suits the "if-then" SC directives..
also notice the last part of the sentence.. mentions about bosses i.e "Alexander in the Mediterranean and Eisenhower n Europe"
the only 2 options that stand out for me are:
option A - had he not been held in check by his superiors
option D - if he was not held in check by his superiors - INCORRECT use of 'was'.. the correct usage is 'were'
I would have marked option A as my answer..
what is the OA plz.. ;)
PS: The final answer is not related to if-then funda.. but the taking it as a starting point helped me nail the answer down. I hope the answer is correct..else all this bhashan would come back right on my face..
