(A) had he not been held in check by his superiors (B) had his superiors not held him in check (C) if his superiors had not held him in check (D) if he was not held in check by his superiors (E) when not held in check by his superiors
attack this one puys.
if condition does not hold good in this context. So C, D are out. Not talking about time, so When is not applicable, So E is out. B is acceptable but awkward structure.
Question:With only one percent of the world's population, the English people have dramatically altered the course of the world.
A) With B) Although accounting for C) Being D) Despite having E) As
Option B stands out and makes sense even if we reword the sentence. Option D looks nice too, but having and ..."have dramatically..." are wrong usage and awkward.
Option B stands out and makes sense even if we reword the sentence. Option D looks nice too, but having and ..."have dramatically..." are wrong usage and awkward.
IMO: Option B
option D is incorrect bcoz "English People" dont have that 1% population in discussion..so "despite having" does not fit in the context.. π

(A) had he not been held in check by his superiors (B) had his superiors not held him in check (C) if his superiors had not held him in check (D) if he was not held in check by his superiors (E) when not held in check by his superiors
need 'superiors' just before comma coz .. superiors are mentioned just after the comma so B,C are out since this is conditional .. when is wron usage... E is out left with A,D.... i think A is correct

'superiors' should be before comma as .. superiors are mentioned just after the comma so B,C are eliminated. since this is conditional .. when is wrong in E and it is eliminated. left with A,D.... A looks like a is correct choice.

Who told u superiors should be b4 the comma???Didn't get the logic!!! D is outrightly wrong....if+was is always wrong. A seems wrong...'By his superiors' seems wordy. D and E are also wordy...B seems to be the safest bet.

John Maynard Keynes, the greatest economist of the twentieth century, once wrote an essay on another Cambridge genius, the scientist and mathematician Isaac Newton.
a)the greatest economist of the twentieth century, once wrote an essay on another Cambridge genius, the scientist and mathematician b)the great economist of the twentieth century, once wrote an essay on another Cambridge genius, the scientist and mathematician c)the greatest economist of the twentieth century, once wrote an essay about another Cambridge genius, the scientist and mathematician d)the greatest economist of the twentieth century, once wrote an essay on another Cambridge genius, who was a scientist and the mathematician e)who was one of the greatest economists in the twentieth century, once wrote an essay on another Cambridge genius, the scientist and mathematician
in D and E...'who' is not required. Essay + about is unidiomatic...so C also goes. As far as I understand...b/w A and B....'greatest economist of the twentieth century' makes more sense rather than..'great economist of the twentieth century'. u always say 'greatest ...of all' and not 'great...of all'. So greatest + of is idiomatic. I would go for A. π
It should be "essay on Issac Newton", so discard option C with 'essay about'..
"the great economist of the twentieth century" this is incorrect usage of adjective.. so discard option B
"who was a scientist and the mathematician".. this is not proper since the reference to 'who' is not clear.. so discard option D
now we are left with option A and option E a)the greatest economist of the twentieth century, once wrote an essay on another Cambridge genius, the scientist and mathematician
e)who was one of the greatest economists in the twentieth century, once wrote an essay on another Cambridge genius, the scientist and mathematician
of the 2 option, the option E makes is clear that 'who' refers to JMK and that he was "one of the greatest" and not "the greatest".. this sentence comes out clear to me...
so discarding option A
I would have marked option E as my choice..
plz share the OA ;)

attack this one puys.
OA for this ques is D.
the problem with A is- had been indicates past continuous that means Patton was continuously held for a long time.
But with D, this problem is eliminated and indicates that Patton was held for a period of time.
I hope this expln helps. This is a tricky question and seems that this type of question has a very high frequency in acual GMAT.

IMO A
The final choice is between A and E. Since, who was indicates passive voice, i will go with A.
well.. not sure about ur expln.. "if-then" is not applicable in the reverse cases.. so the OA might not hold good..
I mean u cant change the order for "if-then" as it would reverse the meaning of the sentence also..
and the usage "if he was" is incorrect as well..
this is tricky.. but to me it looks like a 'look-alike' of classic "if-then" SC exmaple..
According to Herbert Essame, Patton might have accomplished more ___________________, Alexander in the Mediterranean and Eisenhower n Europe. using the if-then funda that comes first to my mind.. I would have filled in the blank space with something that suits the "if-then" SC directives.. also notice the last part of the sentence.. mentions about bosses i.e "Alexander in the Mediterranean and Eisenhower n Europe" the only 2 options that stand out for me are: option A - had he not been held in check by his superiors option D - if he was not held in check by his superiors - INCORRECT use of 'was'.. the correct usage is 'were'
I would have marked option A as my answer..
what is the OA plz.. ;)
PS: The final answer is not related to if-then funda.. but the taking it as a starting point helped me nail the answer down. I hope the answer is correct..else all this bhashan would come back right on my face..

I dont think this is a subjunctive mood to use "were". Subjunctive is used for hopes proposals and desires.
nope.. u r a little wayard.. "were" is used for verbs that have NOT happened/occured..
but u pointed it out correctly that "Subjunctive is used for hopes proposals and desires".. and we have to always use "that" plus "present tense" in such a scenario.. hope that helps!!
