@catfighter

Hey Guys,

Pests had destroyed grape, celery, chili pepper crops, sugar beet and walnut in the region, but in the 1880s, more effective pest-control methods saved the citrus industry.
A. Pests had destroyed grape, celery, chili pepper crops, sugar beet and walnut in the region, but in the 1880s, more effective pest-control methods saved the citrus industry.
B. Pests had destroyed grape, celery, chili pepper, sugar beet and walnut crops in the region, but in the 1880s, more effective pest-control methods saved the citrus industry.
C. Pests had destroyed grape, celery, chili pepper, sugar beet and walnut crops in the region, but more effective pest-control methods that were introduced in the 1880s saved the citrus industry.
D. In the 1880s, pests destroyed grape, celery, chili pepper, sugar beet and walnut crops in the region and more effective pest-control methods saved the citrus industry.
E. In the 1880s, more effective pest-control methods saved the citrus industry from what was destroying grape, celery, chili pepper, sugar beet and walnut crops in the region.
catfighter SaysThe OA is B, and I had marked option C...I had thought that the phrase "in the 1880's" was a bit awkwardly placed and changed the meaning...
u bet its awkward..

I am sure option B cannot be correct.. the sentence doesnt make any sence watsoever
I would have marked option E
correct idioms used -- 3 idioms in fact:
1) potential to ( it eliminates A, C)
2) determined by ( eliminates B)
3) so X as to Y ( eliminates D )
Varun, you are bang on target with this one! I wasnt aware of the 3rd point "So X as Y "...does using "high enough" totally change the meaning?

My answer is maked in bold.
3-2 split.Had destroyed--awkward usage can be eliminated.
Choice E--from what was destroying- no reference
This is pretty neat.. it solved it using parallelism.. I hope my answer matches the OA..
_____________ while critics denounce the tax breaks as corporate welfare that helps some localities but weakens the national economy.
in the underlined portion of the sentence I need something paralel to "critics denounce the tax breaks".. so I discard option A, C & E
of option C and option E, the option C is wordy and uses "to be" which is wrong... so I am left with option D alone..
I would have marked option D.. wats the OA plz.. ;)
Bingo! D is the "OA" I had marked "E" but later realized that the "tax breaks" need a break
catfighter SaysVarun, you are bang on target with this one! I wasnt aware of the 3rd point "So X as Y "...does using "high enough" totally change the meaning?
well.. I go by simple funda.. do what GMAC wants u to do..

if you would notice, sometime u can come up with more sensible sentences on your own than with the help of options.. but its important to stick to basics and do what GMAC wants u to do.. if GMAC expects idioms then give them idioms..
and "high enough" should be floowed by "to".. then only it makes sense... hope that helps π
A - Chilli pepper crops - wrong
C- "methods that" is wrong usage
D - usage of and is awkward and wrong
E - Change of focus. Pest control methods saved, but from what, not necessarily pests, as its not mentioned. May be the pest control methods was to sprinkle soil, and the enrichment in soil save the citrus and not the pests as such.
IMO: B
Well Vikram, your ans matches the OA!
But can u please explain why "methods that" in C is wrong? I thought that "in 1980s" in B was awkwardly placed.
"the lobbying effort" is singular.. so "have" is to be discarded.. discard option A and option B..
of the remaining 3 options, option E is too wordy.. discard that also..
so we are left with option C and option D
C. has increased awareness about pending environmental legislation
D. has increased awareness of pending environmental legislation
I am not sure about the difference between "awareness about" & "awareness of" usage in English.. they both sound valid to me..
somehow here option C sounds better.. so I might go with option C
plz lemme know the OA for this one.. thanks!! ;)
Well, I had followed exactly the same logic as you did...and got it wrong! The OA is "D"..even I had little awareness of the "awareness of vs awareness about" conundrum π
1.B (determine x from y and potential to)
2.E (tax breaks appears twice but i feel repetition is necessary to avoid confusion)
3.D (singular verb has is required, rest of the sentence is fine)
Two of your ans don't match the OA..the 3rd is correct!
Awareness about is not the right usage.
Aware of and awareness of is correct.
Option D is right here.
Vikram, you are right about this too!
My answer is maked in bold.
3-2 split.Had destroyed--awkward usage can be eliminated.
Choice E--from what was destroying- no reference
@vyomb - the OA for this is "B"! I was mainly confused between B and C, but finally chose C...
well.. I go by simple funda.. do what GMAC wants u to do..![]()

Varun - we do have "to" following high enough if u go with option D..the "to" is in the non-underlined part of the sentence.
hi please solve this
A majority of the international journalists surveyed view nuclear power stations as unsafe at present but that they will, or could, be made sufficiently safe in the future.
(A) that they will, or could,
(B) that they would, or could,
(C) they will be or could
(D) think that they will be or could
(E) think the power stations would or could
the 2 RED highlighted parts acknowldge each other.. I was just trying to point out the situation when it would be right.. this is necassary condition, not sufficient condition

yeah ...
The correct idiom is "determined by" not "determined from"
wonder what the OA for 2. is. That was brute of a question.
I will try to post more questions tomorrow.
prediction itself is probability .. so we need 'will', which shows certainity of action..
so down to A, C
due to .. should modify noun.. prediction ..
because of .. should modify verb .. predicting ..
so A. is ans ...
OA pls..
Option D should be correct.
Please check the below link for usage of due to and because of. Hope this will clarify the doubts
'due to' and 'because of'
due to is followed by noun phrase.

Interesting...I could be wrong on this one.
OA plz.
Well Vikram, your ans matches the OA!
But can u please explain why "methods that" in C is wrong? I thought that "in 1980s" in B was awkwardly placed.
catfighter,
"methods that were introduced..." precedes 1880s, and has been input into the sentence with a awkward structure. "...methods, which were introduced..." makes it sound better but cumbersome. And GMAC does not like either of those situations.
Even though "in 1880s" has been placed awkwardly, it atleast is structurally clear, "At time X, Y was done which saved citrus."
