"It" is dangling. Besides "had contributed" is incorrect. Certainly 1930s commenced before these singers contributed.
To tell you honestly, i find "it" dangling in A too and that's why I chose the method of elimination for this problem. Besides dangling "it", as I mentioned , E has another issue which is the use of "had contributed" which is wrong. Therefore I eliminated E.
spot on again bizzarre,
A is the right answer.
But i have a doubt - you eliminated option e) because "it" was dangling.
MY question is - if you are stuck between two choices 1) with a participle and 2) with a modifier "which" ....
other things remaining the same, which of the above do you chose.
For eg: Consider the following example -
Hailed as a key discovery in the science of evolution, the fossils of a large scaly creature resembling both a fish and a land-animal provide evidence of a possible link in the evolutionary chain from water-based to land-based organisms.
a)the fossils of a large scaly creature resembling both a fish and a land-animal provide evidence of
b)the fossils of a large scaly creature, which resembles both a fish and a land-animal, provide evidence of
well... nice question!! You know what, i will pick A because of the meaning of the sentence.
If you consider B, it means creature resembles fish and land-animal but that's not the case. In fact fossil resembles them. Let me know the ans plz.

dear bizzare, i do not know the ans to this question. i modified the answer choices since i had this doubt. I would like someone to clarify this.
But i have something to counter ur argument :-) its the creature that resembles the fish and land-animal and fish.not the fossil. thats what option a) also means.
so meaningwise a) and b) are both the same .am i correct.?
so ,there shud be something else to distinguish b/w them?..
you are raising nice questions man!! good job. well, now i am confused too. The reason i feel that fossil(and not creature) resembles the mentioned animal is that the creature as yet(in the context of this sentence) is unknown. Anything that scientists can deduce upon will be based on the fossil.
Someone got to step in and enlighten us both.

you might never find a single correct asnwer to this question, bcoz both are indeed correct statements/sentences.. and in GMAT SC you need to chose best among the options provided, so the options marked below will NEVER come together in any GMAT ques/test..
Hailed as a key discovery in the science of evolution, ________ a possible link in the evolutionary chain from water-based to land-based organisms.
key discovery = singular a possible link = singular
a)the fossils of a large scaly creature resembling both a fish and a land-animal provide evidence of
fossils = plural provide = plural
here we see that resembling is modifying creature.. and fossils are providing evidence..
Hailed as a key discovery in the science of evolution, _the fossils of a large scaly creature resembling both a fish and a land-animal provide evidence of_ a possible link in the evolutionary chain from water-based to land-based organisms.
this is correct.. nothing is wrong in this sentence..
b)the fossils of a large scaly creature, which resembles both a fish and a land-animal, provide evidence of
"which" is used to represent the part of the sentence that is not important and whose removal whould not change the meaning of the sentence.. thus we have
fossils = plural provide = plural
Hailed as a key discovery in the science of evolution, _the fossils of a large scaly creature provide evidence of_ a possible link in the evolutionary chain from water-based to land-based organisms.
so I believe this is correct as well..
Moral of the story is, both are correct/valid choices..
