having lived in tahiti for several yrs, where life was slow looks as if life was slow in several years, it is modifying several yrs and not tahiti .. so Having lived for several years in Tahiti, where life was slow and relaxed is the correct beginning .. thus B,D,E remain .. again it was paul g. who was facing difficulty , so he is the subject so the next part of the sentence shud start from him .. thus D,E remain .. between them E looks non-sense πŸ˜‰ with the way it ends with upon returning to Paris because of the hectic pace. So Option D looks the best ..

What is the OA for 1?

The meaning for absolve is:
absolve
verb
  1. To free from a charge or imputation of guilt: clear, exculpate, exonerate, vindicate. Law: acquit, purge. See law
  2. To free from an obligation or duty: discharge, dispense, excuse, exempt, let off, relieve, spare

So, absolve means the same as forgive which is used in the first part of the sentence. So, I think 'while' will not convey the correct idea. I go with C

The correct start: "
Having lived for several years in Tahiti, where life was slow and relaxed...". Remain: B,D,E
E - Ungrammatical .
"readjusting upon returning to Paris"
B - "
Having lived for several years in Tahiti, where life was slow and relaxed, it was difficult for Paul Gauguin..." - By the rule "who lived in Tahiti ?" Answer - Paul Gauguin. This should be placed as close as possible to the part of the sentence modifying it. So this one is out when compared to D.
D- Correct for the reasons explained above.

What's the OA?

1.Even as they never forgave the Crusaders who overran their homeland, the Syrians have never absolved the French for taking territory from them.
(A) Even as they never forgave
(B) While they never forgave
(C) Just like they never forgave
(D) Similarly to not forgiving
(E) In spite of their never forgiving

There is no sense of contrast in this question, so use of while, which we generally used to show a contrast or the to show the two action occurring simultaneously in the the present. Therefore, B and E are discarded.

C -> "Like" is used to compare two noun or a noun phrase or clause but here we are comparing action " they never for gave" so it is eliminated

D -> "similarly" an adverb preceding a preposition "to" is an awkward construction hence rejected.

A -> It is best choice as comparison is with "as" (meaning - for instance), this option retain the proper meaning of the sentence. -- "similar to not forgiving the crusaders who overran.....they have never absolved French.

2.Faced with an estimated $2 billion budget gap, the citys mayor proposed a nearly 17 percent reduction in the amount allocated the previous year to maintain the citys major cultural institutions and to subsidize hundreds of local arts groups.

(B) proposed a reduction from the previous year of nearly 17 percent in the amount it was allocating to maintain the citys major cultural institutions and for subsidizing
(C) proposed to reduce, by nearly 17 percent, the amount from the previous year that was allocated for the maintenance of the citys major cultural institutions and to subsidize
(D) has proposed a reduction from the previous year of nearly 17 percent of the amount it was allocating for maintaining the citys major cultural institutions, and to subsidizeďźˆA
(E) was proposing that the amount they were allocating be reduced by nearly 17 percent from the previous year for maintaining the citys major cultural institutions and for the subsidization

It's clear "A" as to maintain parallelism of the sentence begin with "faced" you need other particple, "proposed" so E is out.
D - > has an awkward phrase " it was allocating for maintaining" so rejected.

B-> What is "it" in B in "it was allocating" and same as D, rejected

C -> " that" seems to modify the noun preceding it "previous year" moreover it is bit illogical too as no where is mentioned that what it is going to reduce by 17 %.

3. Following the destruction of the space shuttle Challenger, investigators concluded that many key people employed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its contractors work an excessive amount of overtime that has the potential of causing errors in judgment.

(C) overtime that potentially can cause
(D) overtime, a practice that has the potential for causing
(E) overtime, a practice that can, potentially, cause

E it is and explanation has been given for it. adverb "potentially" clearly modifying verb "cause" and showing the prediction which is the essence of the question- Scientist conclusion.

"Rather Than" is used with Verbs and "instead of" with nouns. This eliminated C & E. The correct idiom is "X Rather than Y" which requires parallelism between X & Y. In option B ,X (accepting - Active Voice ) in not parallel with Y (was sent - passive Voice.) . "Whether" is used in case of uncertainity instead of "if".This eliminates option A. Hence only option D remains which is the correct answer.
