In particular I have never thought of my goals. But still I know, what is my long term goal.
But short term goals........I am confused....what could be my short term goals and what does a short term actually signifies..........the Goals with in 2-3 years ?
Short term goals can also be in terms of the specialization you opt for. If you have decided about what specialization you will take, you can relate your shot term goal to that. For example- For finance you can say my short term goal is to be an equity research analyst in a financial firm. In the same way for marketing you can say my short term goal is to be an area manager for a leading FMCG company. These are just the examples that I have given, and you should not blindly follow these if you don't have atleast a basic idea of these areas because the interviewer might just probe you further.
In last year CV form they have asked "Details of computer proficiency".
I am confused, what can be written in computer proficiency.
I know MS Office, C language, Java till some extent. 1) Now the question is if I write MS Office. They could ask anything as MS Office is very was, specially EXCEL. So in this case should I write this ? 2) And in today's world, I think everybody has worked on different operating system, so will it be worth mentioning if I write,"I know about different Microsoft Operating systems" 3) As I know basics of C and Java, so should I mention this or not ?
The subsequent process will consist of- Essay writing - You will be given a topic related to any current issue or any issue relevant to the social, political or economic situations. You will be given around 20 minutes for this stage of admission process.
Group Discussion - Group Discussion in IIFT is very unique. It goes on for around 45 minutes to 1 hour depending upon the panel. There are around 10 people in the group. Initially everyone will be given a chance to express his/her views on the topic for 2 minutes. After that the discussion will be made open for another 20-30 minutes. Not only this, you will also have to play the role of a moderator at some point of time. The sequence of getting to moderate the group is upto the discretion of the panel. While you are a moderator, you will have to make sure that the discussion is going in the right direction and there is no fish market.
Personal Interview - - The Personal Interview is for an overall personality assessment evaluating one's communication skills and general awareness. In interview, Questions are asked mainly from these three basic areas - Self based questions (around your personality, strengths, leadership skills etc.), Careers vision questions (short and long term vision, goal oriented etc.) and Knowledge based questions (Largely around your area of work and study and general awareness). The CV form that you will fill is also of a great importance. So write your answers carefully and honestly. Also start introspecting the questions like - Why MBA? Why IIFT? Short term and long term objectives of life? Why low academics? (for those who have low scores) Why MBA after job? (for people with work-ex) Why MBA after, lets say, computer science engineering? (for freshers) etc etc.

Hi Prince , I have gone through the last year's GDPI experience thread but could not find any commerce guy sharing his experience. Can you tell me as to what sort of question , academic or not , can be asked to me??? Another query i have is , that i have a specialization in marketing but that was to be selected in the third year, during the first two years i have studied all the finance and accounting related subjects like all the other students. Is there a chance that i will be asked finance and accounting related questions irrespective of my specialization???

Mention things about which you atleast have some basic knowledge. They will not go deep into it as there is no dearth of questions that can be asked in the interview. 1) Yes you can write MS Office. They will not go deep into it ask you about look-up functions and all. Relex. 2) If you can operate another operating system, like linux, mention it, though it doesn't matter. 3) Yes if you have a computer science background, you should mention 1 or 2 languages.

As I am not from the commerce background, I am not too sure about it. But what I know for sure is that you can expect a lot of academic questions thrown at you. For example they can ask you about some accounting terms. I will ask one of my batchmate from commerce background to write about his interview experience to give you an idea.
It depends on the way you take forward your interview. They don't expect you to know everything, in fact they are there just to know you better. It's entirely upto you how you project your interests in front of them. If you tell them that I am interested in marketing, they are not going to ask you anything related to finance.

i have a query regarding GD for senior.
well it is said that we better put first outline to a GD in spite of randomly discussing it. well as said by prince, we will be first getting 2 min to put our view. so what does senior think that we should speak initially, i mean do we just put outline in this 2 min or on open discussion. also if there is need to put forward outline in open discussion, then what all should we be speaking in these 2 min, say on any random current topic..on which we have many thing to talk about.

The good part of a GD in IIFT is dat everyone gets their chance to speak in the GD(even if one doesnt, the moderator makes sure that he/she is given a chance at the end to summarize)...but the trade off to it is dat the length of the GD is quite extensive...it wud generally last for around an hour for a group of 10-12 people...if u r within the first few in the group as per ur seating arrangement(the moderator mite ask to start the initial 2 minute individual discussion to start sequentially) u mite get chance to put forward ur initial thoughts in the 2 mins allotted....but if u happen to sit at the last, den by the time ur turn comes, most of the points mite have been exhausted...just make sure that u listen wat others had to say(its equally important as well)....just try and push in a few new points(if u have any)...or pick up some cues from wat others had to say...just provide a basic outline on the topic in those 2 minutes....atleast u shud need lots of materials to survive the entire 1 hour...
Few queries regarding the topics you mentioned us to read...
Regarding WTO, IMF and all the other institutions....What exactly are we asked? Their history? Their present status? New developments in these?
And also, Can you please suggest some book or magazine where I can get an in-depth knowledge about the financial and monetary policy of INDIA.....how these two are different, how they operate in crisis....
And also, Can you please suggest some book or magazine where I can get an in-depth knowledge about the financial and monetary policy of INDIA.....how these two are different, how they operate in crisis....
You can refer to Business Standard or Economic Times to understand several financial terms and policies of Indian Government. Also, i found this article on monetory policy .. hope this helps
Introduction In mid 90s the thrust of monetary policy was to reduce the annual inflation rate and provide credit support for production. Money supply (M3) was reduced considerably, mainly because of a slow growth in bank deposits and a decline in the growth of reserve money. Slow growth Another major factor in controlling this growth was the lower level of foreign exchange inflows. Slower monetary growth was accompanied by lower bank credit to the commercial sector. These trends were compounded by a decline in other sources of finance to industry, such as primary issues in the domestic stock market and GDR issues in Euro markets. Other reasons Funds raised from capital markets declined and the amount raised through Euro issue loans also fell down nearly 70 percent over the same period. Continued high levels of government borrowing associated with a large and over-budget fiscal deficit kept money markets tight throughout the period. This in turn put increasing pressure on interest rates. Monetary Growth Despite falling inflation, real rates faced by industry remained high, and the prime lending rate of most of the banks was 16.5 percent. Based on an inflation rate of 6 percent and projected GDP growth of 6.6 percent for 1996-97, monetary growth had been targeted at 15.5-16 percent for 1996-97. RBI measures The RBI reduced banks' cash reserve requirements by one percentage point, freed bank deposit interest rates of over one year term and shortened the minimum term for deposits from 46 days to 30 days. It also withdrew a refinancing facility for banks' investments in government securities. These steps were to add the equivalent of USD 1.2 billion to the banking sector. Short-term call money market rates of interest and forward premiums on the dollar have dropped sharply. Response While financial and industry sources have welcomed the liquidity-easing measures, they remain worried at the rigidity of high lending rates of interest and suspect that the Government will soon absorb this new bank liquidity by increasing Government borrowing from the market. Growth of M3 Growth in broad money (M3) in 1997-98 registered an increase, higher than the RBI's growth target. The increase was due to a substantial expansion of domestic credit to the government and the business sector, and an increase in net foreign exchange assets. Bank credit to business increased, net RBI credit to the government increased and strong foreign exchange inflows during the first half of 1997-98 coupled with sluggish credit creation ensured that the money market was awash with liquidity. Banks investment in government securities increased by 17.7 percent in 1997-98, and non-food credit to business increased by 14.2 percent. Credit policy The credit policy for April-October 1998, aimed to accelerate industrial investment and output, keep inflation under control, continue financial sector reforms, reduce interest rates and improve credit availability to meet business requirements. Key reference rates were reduced by one percentage point each, sending a strong signal that commercial banks should lower interest rates for commercial borrowers. Banks responded by reducing prime lending rates to 13 percent. The Cash Reserve Ratio requirement was left unchanged at 10 percent. Under the new credit policy, FIIs were allowed to invest up to 30 percent of their assets in treasury bills, and banks were given freedom to fix penalties on premature withdrawal of deposits. In January 1998, the rupee hit a low of Rs 40.45/ dollar, due in large part to concerns about the Asian currency crisis. RBI measures The RBI adopted a number of measures that stopped the rupee's slide and actually led to some appreciation. These measures included an increase in banks' cash reserve ratio and an increase in the RBI's bank rate. Once the rupee had stabilized, the RBI announced a two-phase rollback of the bank rate to 10 percent, and of the CRR to 10 percent. In both cases, the first phase was to be effective from late March and the second in early April. The interest rate on short-term domestic deposits was also deregulated and banks were allowed to set different prime lending rates.
