Hi,

This is Ranajoy.I am penning down this query which if replied will really help me to channelize my direction ahead in a proper manner.

I have passed my Bachelors in Pharmacy in the year 2009 post which I worked in Healthcare Insurance Domain as an Assistant Clinical Analyst for 1.5 yrs.

Within this timeframe I did a Statistical Analysis Course (SAS) and am presently working in TCS as an Statistical Analyst for Clinical Trials for the past 1 year.So my total experience accounts to something around 2.5 yrs.

I want to excel in the field of healthcare analytics and thus I want to get an MS degree in healthcare administration from US.The other plausible approach that I can follow is working in this domain for few more years an then get into an MBA with an elective as healthcare.

Am really in afix as to which option will be more suitable for me?Kindly provide your feedback

I think you are ineligible for LSE because they require a minimum 80% in graduation. Please check again.

Wow, baccardisprite that was a gr8 deal of info.... Thankz....

Hi All,

I have been a silent observer of this thread for the past few days and have read a lot of suggestions posted here. I must congratulate baccardisprite for the excellent suggestions he has been giving to so many puys.

There are lot of threads going around in pagal guy with people give lots of suggestions.. but I feel bacardisprite has been giving most realistic suggestions in this thread. Well done and pls keep up the good job.

I would also like to get some suggestions about higher studies abroad.

About myself... not so great but average profile...
Class X - 80% XII - 65%
BE Mechanical Engg. 67%

Currently I have about 5.5 years of work experience in variety of industries.
I spent almost first 3 yrs working for one of the worlds biggest and most diversified company in their IT division. I have worked in PLM applications supporting global sales team and a bit of SAP as well.
Then I joined my family business which is into mechanical engineering, machining and industrial manufacturing.. mostly catering to automobile businesses around the country. My work was mostly business development and project management which included mostly managing the supply chain and purchases. Recently I have started another venture to export garments to Europe.

As for extra curricular activities. I am an avid chess and badminton player. Played in lot of chess competitions. Represented school teams. I am also a violin player. I practice indian classical music and occasionally perform at various cultural events. I am attached to a local cultural non profit committee, and I have been an active member organising cultural functions, field and educational trips etc.

I am now looking to do an MBA. I am interested to do my specialization in supply chain and logistics area.
My future prospects are that I am looking to work in a global management role after the mba, gain a good global exposure, contact base, network , funds and ideas and then in the long run do entrepreneurship.

Actually this decision for higher studies was taken late last year. I want to enroll in a program starting from 2012 itself and so hurriedly wrote the GMAT.. and ended up with a paltry 590.

I know this is a waste score, but still I am keeping my fingers crossed and am planning to apply for a few colleges like, NUS, NTU. I feel that Singapore is the best place to get a global exposure in terms of supply chain and logistics. Pls suggest if any US schools could be applied with this score. I am considering whether I should apply in Thunderbird or not, but still not sure.

Apart from this I was also looking for options like MS in Supply chain and logistics. As mentioned by baccardisprite in the beginning of this thread, I have looked to logistics institute in Singapore, but they demand a GRE score which I dont have .. then I looked into the MLOG program of MIT, which is good but I feel that my score is too weak for this... and the MSc in TIL from TU Delft ... which is not exactly about supply chain and logistics, but more about transportation and logistics movement.. which doesnt really suit my requirement.. I have also looked into the SP Jain global management programme with supply chain major and am thinking to apply for that.

I am looking forward for some good suggestions about any other good colleges or programs which I might consider. Also considering the current global economic conditions, I would also have to consider the location factor. US and Europe are going through a bad phase, and so is India. Please provide me suggestions considering all these facts. Overall , I am looking forward for a course with true value for money considering all factors.

I would recommend the second approach. An MS is less likely to add much by way of professional / functional skill in health analytics. What could help is if you can leverage your experience by going into Clinical Trial planning & management in a Pharma / Biotech / Medical device major or Research Org in any of these industries if possible, then do 3-4 years there. It ensures you have experience in both the IT & business side of things in this functional field (critical to Global Healthcare majors), after which an MBA (e.g with dedicated healthcare and finance / strategy electives) would help you become attractive to employers in the industry & service providers to the industry.

Hi Baccardisprite, Wishing a happy new year to all members. I hope you can help me with a crucial decision regarding MIM.

I have recently recieved a 50 % merit award from escp europe for their masters in management program. Since the beginning i was highly inclined towards the french schools which feature in the top slots in the rankings, however recently i have had doubts about taking up a min. 3 year option for a masters. I know about escp's brand name. the only hitch is -

1) How much do you think the language will play a role in career search ( French ) ?

2) In the long run, do you think it is really worth spending 3 years ( 2 yeards academic + 1 year compulsory internship ) on a Masters degree and NOT an MBA ? ( for eg how nicely recognized will a ESCP MIM be in the Indian markets once I graduate and come back, will the traditional MBA's be preferred over me , even for Analyst level positions ? )

3) Does anyone have any concrete information about the school's career services, placements- sector wise. avg salary quoted in the web site is decent, but anyone with anything more ?

4) any other top 1 year programs u suggest , apart from LBS/LSE ?

I mean I will be 25- 26 when I start to earn full time.

thanks for your help

1. Hugely important! While not as prevalent as English, French is THE business language in France and Francophone countries, primary mode of (at least) verbal communication amongst executives in French Multinationals. If you're attending a 2+1 program, make sure French language training is a compulsory part of the program.

Like the UK and the rest of Europe, France isn't exactly booming, but to be at least in line with a chance for any company in France, speaking French to at least business fluency (read, write, speak and negotiate in French) is essential if not critical.

2. Not many will have heard of ESCP's program in India, so that should answer your question on credibility. Instead you have hopefully thought of your career goals ??? Function / Industry (type of company) ??

Depending on your goals, try and get into a French MNC with strong / fast growing operations in Asia / India. If you work in their European / French operations for 2-3 years, you'd gain both professional & cultural experience in order to rise in those companies. There're some pretty famous French Multinationals active worldwide.

FMCG/Luxury/Retail - L'Oreal, LVMH, Nestl (Swiss-French), Danone, PPR, Carrefour, Publicis (advertizing), Pernod Ricard
Travel / Hosp. - AirFrance, SNCF (Rail),
Engineering / Energy / Environment - Total, Alstom, Michelin, Areva, Veolia, GDF-Suez, EDF, Lafarge, EADS (Airbus maker)
Automotive - Peugeot-Citroen, Renault-Nissan
Financial - BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole, Societe General
Healthcare - Sanofi Aventis

3. The French schools (apart from INSEAD) are NOT known for career services offices that would bring companies in droves to recruit (unlike what you've heard / seen at Indian business schools). This is because the job search is an individual pursuit that the individual has to drive and take complete accountability for. The career services offices will help you craft your CV and hopefully have the resources to train you put your best forward on what will largely be an off-campus job search. They will also hopefully provide you with access to the schools alumni base with whom you can network in various forums. ESCP is a Grand Ecole business school in France, so should have the credibility for at least some companies to present on campus, but be prepared to conduct a largely self-driven job search.

4. If the program comes with a compulsory (and hopefully compensated) internship, it's probably a better academic, learning and future career option than going to a plain vanilla M.S Management degree in LBS or LSE, though those might be better known schools. 50% scholarship is nothing to sniff at, and you could make that prominent on your CV when searching for a job. Use the time to craft a proper job search strategy early on, ask the school's career resources to train you (instead of spoon-feed company contacts to you), learn the art & science of the job search in France & Europe patiently. Do NOT lose the opportunity to learn French as a language.

Why are you interested in Operations Research? What career (function / industry / geography) will this education enable? Why LSE? Tell us all this, and you might get valuable insight and advice.

Otherwise, the UK economy is now fundamentally unwelcoming to Non-EU graduates and citizens, even after you pay the full-fare in a UK institution.

1. As long as you can quantify your achievements and successes your entrepreneurial turnaround of your business will be counted.

2. I don't think so, but best to ask schools about eligibility and experience queries. Normally what the big & famous schools write on their websites is true enough.

3. You might want to look at my response to another poster 3 posts before this one.

4. I don't know, ask the the LBS MiM program office for such information. Why should anyone on this forum know better?

5. If you want to work in India immediately after such a program, best to go for an IIM PGPM.

6. Placements - please read my posts on this. If my memory serves me right, I wrote back to a lot of posters on exactly this point in posts #800-900 on this thread (Page 80-90 on this thread).

You sound like a smart fellow, why the under-confidence? And amongst all the options you have put forward, I wouldn't recommend any. Instead, I recommend a few months of diligent preparation, and retaking the GMAT for a 700+ score. Once you crack 700+, your options are more numerous, and for the goals you have, and the profile you've achieved (salaried and entrepreneurial), you can be way more ambitious.

Go to the GMAT thread on this forum, speak to a poster called Psychodementia. Tell him your GMAT story and then take his advice. I would suggest you take some professional help to improve your GMAT score. Looks like you can afford it....

Hi Everyone,

My question here, is to all the experienced Puys, already cleared CFA L1/L2 or working in finance or as an analyst.

" CFA is of no use for Unemployed graduates(engineers) seeking a career change. I will fetch you simply no job or do you no good! "

This is a statement given to me by a well known CA with 20yr experience.

I am now again all confused .. whether to stop my CFA L1 preps fur June 12'?

Please Comment,
Really need some gyaan here..

Regards
Despicable
Any, comments would be really valuable for all CFA aspirants and would lead them to do something more worthwhile with their time and money.

PS : I am a Mechanical Engineer, from BITS, Graduated in 2011.
Long term goal : Investment banking analyst via the MiM route.

The CA is partially correct. At your age & stage, the passing the CFA exams is unlikely to help you secure a job in the industry.

The right to be called a CFA comes after passing the exams and recording a number of years of experience according to the CFA institutional guidelines. So that indicates that those who achieve the qualification have already spent time in the industry. As a globally endorsed professional qualification, it's an assurance assurance to your employer of your professional competence investment management using quantitative financial techniques.

Writing the exams and passing them will indicate your seriousness to enter the finance industry - both adcomms of schools you apply to for your Masters / MBAs and employers after. But it's no magic bullet.

Baccardisprite...

Thanks a lot man for answering to my query. I do admit that I am currently having a bit of under - confidence. Actually, I have currently hit a bad patch in my career as almost all my customers are severely hit by the recession and the business is encurring huge losses. So I am looking for some immediate changes without wasting much time.

Thanks for your advice and referral to Psychodementia, I would definitely write to him. I had actually taken some professional help this time, but it still turned out to be a disaster.

Considering my current personal and financial conditions, it might get difficult for me to wait over for more than a year to get into another mba program, i might have to look for a change in career and search for jobs if the recession turns pretty worse.

Anyways.. thanks again ... and keep up your good work.

I am pratibha sahu i want to say thanx to give this artical.
