Hello to all the consultants taking time out and answering people's queries here. You are doing a great job. Cheers. The reason I post is that I too along with so many other confused souls here, need your help/advice.
About me.
I am currently in my Second year in Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University pursuing B.A (Hons) Economics. I scored 70% in my First Year and was the college topper.
10th- 96.6%
12th-91.6%
Another addition (maybe) to my profile would be that I secured admission to University College London in the UK for Bsc Economics. (Rated 4th best in the world by the QS Rankings)
I have decent extra-curriculars. (Involved with an NGO, did an internship in Reliance Life last year, will probably do a couple more this year, am a good orator and writer and have numerous school-level certificates)
Now, I am preparing for CAT this year. If I get a good %ile and get into a Top 10 college, well and good. If not, then I would like you to please realistically evaluate my chances at some of the Top Pre-experience Master's programs in the UK and elsewhere. Specifically, Master's in Management at LBS, Mfin at LSE, MFE at Oxford etc.
I will give my GMAT this year in the summer vacations and expect a decent enough score (Above 700 at the very least).
What do you think is my chance of making it into one of these programs. The thing that proves to be of the greatest deterrent to me is my college, Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Although a part of DU, I realize it has almost zero brand value compared to the likes of SRCC, St. Stephen's etc. So provided I maintain a good academic record (Above 70), do you think I can get into these programs?
I am also applying to the YLP at ISB this year.
So, if you could, please take some out and assess my chances at these universities? If I have a low probability of making it, I'll probably just buck up my CAT preparations even more as the placement scene in my college is pathetic.
Thanks in advance and regards,
Shubham Agarwal.
Baccardisprite... Thanks a lot man for answering to my query. I do admit that I am currently having a bit of under - confidence. Actually, I have currently hit a bad patch in my career as almost all my customers are severely hit by the recession and the business is encurring huge losses. So I am looking for some immediate changes without wasting much time. Thanks for your advice and referral to Psychodementia, I would definitely write to him. I had actually taken some professional help this time, but it still turned out to be a disaster. Considering my current personal and financial conditions, it might get difficult for me to wait over for more than a year to get into another mba program, i might have to look for a change in career and search for jobs if the recession turns pretty worse.
Anyways.. thanks again ... and keep up your good work.
I am sorry to hear that. But your life and career are not a deadline. You have a better profile than you give yourself credit for, and it would be a pity to give up the opportunity to attend a good school because of a single (but important for Indians) data point.
Get another job (unless your business can be salvaged) and work the extra year to give yourself time to plan, the space to breathe and the resources to prepare a diligent, strong attempt at the GMAT. As tempting as it is, don't deadline any aspect of your life.
All the best

People in SRCC and Stephen's are studying the same curriculum and giving the same DU exams every year and the same DU Econ degree. You're part of India's best known public university outside of the IITs/IIMs.
Better than evaluating your chances, tell us your career goals. Why don't you want to work after graduation? Why the rush to go abroad?

The most important reason is that I won't get a good job after college. Hardly 3-4 companies come to my college and the maximum packages they offer are from INR 3-4 lpa. (One of the companies is Covergys, a call centre)
So, basically I want to start working at a decent enough job least.
That is why I want to get an MBA directly after college if possible or if not, atleast add a brand value college to my CV because I know I shall be able to leverage it here in India too if I fail to get a job in the UK.
My career goal is to work in Investment Banking-M&A; division. Hence the need for a brand name school, you see. And right now after my undergrad degree, anything even close to IB (Forget IB itself) is near impossible and the desire for profile checks to add a sense of security or alternatively get very disheartened and prepare better for CAT. :P
Thanks for taking time and replying.
Hi baccardisprite
Can you please let me know the best international schools for an MBA in public relations?
Is relevant work-ex needed for these schools?
And a little insight into these schools...
thanks in advance
@baccardisprite and other knowledgeable puys,
would anyone throw some light on MS in analytics at North Carolina?
how good is the course and what it holds from students from India(with a work ex in IT for 2 and a half years :))
Thanks
Hi, I was going through this thread and I must say that I have gathered a lot of useful information about the various masters courses available.
I have the following 2 questions for the veterans, kindly help me with these.
1. Will a masters in marketing be useful to me (kindly go through my profile) in terms of job opportunities keeping the below quote from this very thread in mind (Plain vanilla management, marketing and international business programs tend to focus on aspects of business where strong local professional experience / cultural assimilation is required which would almost certainly exclude you from these jobs at an initial stage of your career)
if so, kindly suggest some courses in australia, new zeland, singapore and the US.
2. also please suggest a few good courses in logistics, SCM and operations (i am torn between a career in mktg and SCM) in the above mentioned countries.
My profile:
Age: 24
B Tech in telecommunications from a reputed college.
GMAT score: 730
decent EC.
work ex: 2.5 years in IT (retail and SCM domain)

Is campus placement the only way to get a job? Are call centers all you can think of?

I don't know of any specific / best MBA in & for public relations. Although this would be extensions of any of the three functions - Marketing, HR and Corporate communications. A top 10 MBA with elective courses in Marketing Communications, Strategy and HR; followed by a first job and 4-5 years in any of the three functions would help. Alternative, NGO's and associated fund raising would also be an ideal ground to train you for a long term career in PR.
Tends to be a local career though, as you'd almost certainly need culturally immersive experience in the job market you'd try to access.

Lot's of universities in North Carolina. Which one do you refer to? Why this program? What do you intend to use this education for? Career goals?

1. The reason I called it a fairly useless plain vanilla degree is because marketing (meaning sales & marketing) is function best learned on the job. Secondly, marketing is a culturally immersive career and getting a role in this field requires familiarity and comfort with the local culture. Merely being able to speak, read and write English does NOT qualify. Applies in all the countries you have mentioned.
2. Quite a number. MIT's SCM Degree, Georgia Tech's Dual Masters with TLI in Singapore, Cranfield's M.Sc in Logistics and SCM...

I am sorry i did leave a lot of gaps. university- north carolina state university .
i am an IT guy wanting to switch to analytics - cos i am genuinely interested in analytics. i think i will be better at it than in software industry. This program cos one - it would be a good launchpad and two - after 2 and a half years of IT its very difficult to get a lateral entry. believe me i have tried, have taken private coaching for advanced analytics , all the companies want at least 6 months relevant exp. i still trying , certifications are next, but i am not very hopeful.
also any other good alternatives to this program or maybe even a better one? i am specifically looking for higher education(MS or equivalent ) in analytics.
Thanks baccardisprite, you really are a lighthouse :biggrin:

Then what do you suggest. How do I go around strengthening m profile or looking for a job with even a slight relevance to IB?
And please if you could tell me if I stand a chance at LSE or Oxford for a pre-experience Master's with my profile?

India is the hotbed of analytics work right now, and it's the fastest growing sub-sector in the ITES space. IF you want to get into this space now, with your level of experience, better & safer option is to go for an MBA in a good Indian school with strong elective base in Ops Research and Decision Sciences, and target a good small / medium KPO type outfit doing high end ops research & business analytics work. NITIE, SP Jain's PGDM with Ops Management, the IIT MBAs or one of the IIMs if you can get in.
If you want to work in the states, NCSU is a good university, but not exactly the top tier. You're exposing yourself to the risk of a foreigner unfriendly job market in the US, though you could take a chance and try for one of the 20,000 H1Bs offered to Masters Grads. The US prefers people in pure sciences, maths and engineering for these H1Bs. IF you want to go to NCSU and then come back to India, it's an expensive investment compared to what I have suggested above, for the same/similar career impact. You'll need to choose your battle on that one.

Then what do you suggest. How do I go around strengthening m profile or looking for a job with even a slight relevance to IB?
And please if you could tell me if I stand a chance at LSE or Oxford for a pre-experience Master's with my profile?
First things first - maintain a consistently flawless academic record and stay amongst the top 5-10% of your class.
Many who enter IB gain experience in other functional areas before coming to IB? How about trying to get into areas like retail banking with one of the major private or public banks? Delhi / Noida / Gurgaon are all hotspots for KPO and analytics type outfits, plenty of large & small ones. Check out their websites and see which ones are doing stuff related to financial and business analytics and research for IB clients. Spend 3-4 years, rise to team lead roles, learn a few things about finance and investments, pass 2 levels of the CFA - and communicate to b-schools, later employers that you're serious about a career in banking. Note however that the M&A; part of IB is not for the young and inexperienced, you'd have to do the hard yards as an associate in one of the IB areas before you start getting exposure to the clients and the fun assignments.
In parallel - stop worrying about these things and concentrate on cracking the CAT. Not only CAT - try some other Top 10 Indian schools - FMS, XLRI, SP Jain, MDI, IMT-G, NMIMS, IIFT, J Bajaj etc.... If you stay within the Top 10, you're positioning yourself to be noticed by the preferred employers, hopefully some of these are big banks (Indian or International).
As for LSE/Oxford, if you can write a good set of essays, you have a shot, but note LSE's and Oxford's selectivities for these programs is about 8-10%, so it's quite competitive. That aside, you'll need to think about the job market in the UK/EU as well. Bankers are not exactly viewed very positively by the general public (read all the noise about bonuses recently), the UK's job market is grim for all industries, and your visa will NOT allow you to work in the UK without a sponsor (unlike previously) willing to get you a work permit. The last mentioned is again difficult, as the UK Gov will NOT be welcoming to non-EU workers for the forseeable future. THerefore, companies (including the banks you so badly want to get into) will prefer recruiting a local at the same or lower salary than you, with no legal or administrative hassles.
