Hmm.., myself - total newbie. By newbie I mean - I didn't know that Xaviers don't take CAT scores and that i had to apply to colleges before the results would be out. So now I am stuck writing SoP in 2 days and sending apps just before my date with fate...

For both GK & essay there is same ages old saga but still its very best & effective. For GK reading Newspaper is distinctly number one. Just try to list down only most important news in some notebook for revision. Try reading whole newspaper & magazines. Same is also required for essays also along with reading novels that too of different variety as you could write only when you have hear others. Some say to go for heavy english word laden hindu newspaper's editorials & psychology based novels , for this I would say first analyse yourself if you are not a very much reader , then go first from things you like most say fashion/sports magazines or fictional levels develop reading a habbit and simoultaneouly writing also by expressing what you read into your own terms.

Try searching PG as it contains useful threads like "Books i recommend most " etc where one can finds lots of info.
